Zapata blow for Milan

15 January 2015

772443header.jpg

Milan defender Cristian Zapata is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a fractured metatarsal in Tuesday's win over Sassuolo.

Milan have suffered an injury blow after it was revealed that defender Cristian Zapata sustained a fractured metatarsal during Tuesday's victory against Sassuolo.

The Colombia international took a blow to his right foot in a challenge late on in the 2-1 Coppa Italia win at San Siro, but was unable to see out the match.

Milan have now revealed that Zapata suffered a break, but did not disclose how long they expect the 28-year-old to be ruled out for.

A statement on the club's official website said: "AC Milan communicates that in the final minutes of Milan-Sassuolo following a challenge Cristian Zapata suffered a bone fracture at the base of the second metatarsal in his right foot."

Milan are eighth in Serie A and host Atalanta on Sunday.

Lazio dealt Felipe Anderson blow

15 January 2015

772543header.jpg

Lazio have been dealt a blow by the news that in-form midfielder Felipe Anderson will miss around three weeks after spraining his left knee.

Lazio's Brazilian midfielder Felipe Anderson is set to miss around three weeks of action after suffering a sprained knee during training on Thursday.

The former Santos man has been impressive in recent weeks for Stefano Pioli's side - scoring all six of his goals this season in his past seven games.

The 21-year-old netted in Sunday's 2-2 draw with rivals Roma, but now looks set to miss around three weeks, although the club will be relieved by the fact Anderson did not suffer any meniscal tears.

"This morning [Thursday], during training at the Sports Center of Formello, Felipe Anderson suffered a sprain of the left knee," read a statement on Lazio's official website.

"The findings this afternoon at the clinic Paideia in Rome have ruled out the presence of associated meniscal tears.

"The athlete will therefore observe a period of rest and medical care and is currently estimated back in around three weeks unless there are complications."

Garcia rules out Destro exit

16 January 2015

773040header.jpg

Roma coach Rudi Garcia has no plans to allow Mattia Destro to leave the Serie A club amid links of a move to Milan.

Roma head coach Rudi Garcia has no intention of letting striker Mattia Destro depart Stadio Olimpico during the January transfer window.

Italy international Destro has found playing time hard to come by at Roma this season and has started just seven of Roma's 18 Serie A matches, scoring four times.

Subsequently, the former Siena man has been linked with an exit during January and speculation has suggested Milan are interested in striking a deal.

However, Garcia is adamant that Destro is not for sale and stated he will be important in Roma's assault on the Serie A title in the second half of the campaign.

"Mattia Destro is vital, he'll score goals for us," he said.

"I'm counting on him for the second half of the season. My squad has been specially constructed to deal with all the commitments we have during the season."

Garcia also refused to be drawn on the spat between Roma president James Pallotta and Lazio counterpart Claudio Lotito over the past week.

Lotito is reported to have told Roma to keep the "club's books in order" in reference to a UEFA investigation into their Financial Fair Play regulations.

That drew a strongly worded response from Pallotta and Garcia insists Roma will not back away from the argument.

"Lotito? I don't want to waste time on that," he added.

"The directors have already responded. We won't back down, not even an inch."

Roma sit three points adrift of leaders Juventus and could go level by winning at Palermo on Saturday, as Massimiliano Allegri's side do not play until Sunday.

And Garcia wants to see an improvement in Roma's away form at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

"I expect the players to always give 100 per cent and to have the same ambitions as their coach," he said. "We need to give everything until the last second to get the three points against Palermo.

"Away from home we need to make up for lost points so we go to Palermo to win."

Mancini refuses to rule out M´Vila, Osvaldo exits

16 January 2015

773186header.jpg

As speculation mounts on the futures of Yann M'Vila and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, head coach Roberto Mancini admits the duo may leave Inter.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini refused to rule out the possibility of Yann M'Vila and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo departing San Siro during in January.

Both players joined the Serie A club on initial loan deals from Rubin Kazan and Southampton respectively during the last transfer window.

However, the duo have struggled for regular first-team football since Mancini returned to Inter in November, while Osvaldo was reportedly involved in a bust up with strike partner Mauro Icardi.

And Mancini confirmed there is a possibility that M'Vila and Osvaldo could depart the club this month.

"M'Vila needs to play," he said. "In the past few days he's been training separately. We'll know his intentions in the coming days.

"Osvaldo is training with a personal trainer, we'll know more in the coming days."

Osvaldo has been linked with a return to Serie A champions Juventus, who he represented on loan in the second half of the 2013-14 season.

Mancini added: "I haven't spoken to him about it. I hope we will find the best solution for him."

Inter travel to Empoli on Saturday aiming for back-to-back league wins, but Mancini warned of the threat posed by Maurizio Sarri's side.

"Empoli are a great team with a top manager," he added. "They're having a good season and it's never easy to go to Empoli and win.

"We'll have to be on our toes because they know exactly what they're doing there. We need to be completely focused on Empoli."

Serie A Preview: Pioli plays it cool ahead of Napoli visit

16 January 2015

773207header.jpg

Lazio coach Stefano Pioli has played down expectations of challenging for Europe ahead of Sunday's Serie A clash with Napoli.

Stefano Pioli has cooled talk of Lazio challenging for a European berth this season as he prepares to welcome fourth-place Napoli to the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Third meets fourth in Rome with Pioli's men a point clear of Napoli, having not tasted defeat in any competition since November.

Rafael Benitez's men will be seeking to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to Juventus, in which they felt hard done by with certain refereeing decisions, and Pioli has warned Lazio have work to do if they are to maintain their lofty position.

"We are going through a good period of form and knew January would be an important month in the fixture list," he explained after Wednesday's Coppa Italia win over Torino.

"I am fortunate to have a complete squad that has a lot of quality in all areas. Now we can look ahead to Napoli, which will be a difficult match.

"It’s premature to talk about [Europe]. The important thing is that all the lads are involved in a healthy competition for places, so there are no first choice and second string players."

Pioli will be without in-form forward Felipe Anderson due to a knee injury as Lazio look to close the gap on city rivals Roma above them following last weekend's derby stalemate.

Rudi Garcia's side travel to Palermo on Saturday, while leaders Juve entertain Hellas Verona on Sunday - having beaten Andrea Mandorlini's side 6-1 in the Coppa Italia on Thursday.

At the bottom, Cesena and Parma both have home advantage as they host Torino and Sampdoria respectively, with Gianfranco Zola's Cagliari visiting Udinese.

Zola picked up his first win in charge against Cesena last time out in the league and, while his side were beaten by Parma in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday, victory on Sunday could take them out of the bottom three.

Cagliari would need results elsewhere to go their way with Chievo taking on Fiorentina and Atalanta travelling to San Siro to face Milan.

Roberto Mancini could hand recent signing Xherdan Shaqiri his Inter debut on Saturday against Empoli - with the Swiss likely to ask questions of a side who have drawn their last three home Serie A games 0-0.

Elsewhere, Genoa host Sassuolo in a battle between two mid-table teams.

Palermo 1-1 Roma: Giallorossi held in Sicily

By Rupert Fryer
Jan 17, 2015 21:39:00

827532_heroa.jpg

Mattia Destro struck a second-half equaliser for Rudi Garcia's understrength side, leaving Juventus the chance to extend their lead to five points on Sunday

Roma saw their Serie A title hopes take a dent on Saturday as they stumbled to a 1-1 draw with Palermo in Sicily.

The hosts came into the tie unbeaten in their last six games and continued their habit of making good starts when they took an early lead through Paulo Dybala after just two minutes. The Sicilians have now scored 21 first-half goals this season, more than any other club in Serie A.

Davide Astori's stray pass was intercepted by Franco Vazquez, who rolled in his fellow Argentine to slot home the opener from close range.

It was Dybala's 10th goal of the campaign and the third time this season that Rudi Garcia's men had gone behind inside the opening three minutes.

A depleted Roma side were clearly missing the presence of Daniele De Rossi, Radja Nainggolan and Seydou Keita in a midfield that was persistently bypassed by a Palermo side who played with a real zip in the first half, frequently looking to get Vazquez and Dybala running at an often exposed visiting backline.

In a quiet first period the hosts could have doubled their lead five minutes before the break, but Morgan De Sanctis made a diving save to stop Edgar Barreto's header from 12 yards as Roma failed to secure a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

The Giallorossi made a much more positive start to the second half, carving out their best chance of the match within a minute of the restart, but Mattia Destro could only head Jose Holebas' whipped cross over the bar.

The visitors continued to improve in the opening stages of the second period and managed to work Stefano Sorrentino for the first time on 52 minutes, though Miralem Pjanic's fierce strike was straight at the Palermo goalkeeper.

Roma continued to press and were level two minutes later when Pjanic's in-swining free kick from the left was nodded down by Kevin Strootman for Destro to stab home from inside the six-yard box.

Former Boca starlet Leandro Paredes was making his first start of the season and the Argentine made his first serious contribution on the hour mark when he tested Sorrentino from long range.

But for all Roma's improvement, Palermo should have been ahead a minute later as Baretto played in Dybala, but this time the Argentine's shot was blocked by a sprawling De Sanctis.

The draw means table-topping Juventus have the chance to extend their lead at the summit of Serie A to five points when they host Verona on Sunday.

Empoli 0 Inter 0: Toothless visitors held to underwhelming stalemate

17 January 2015

773862header.jpg

Roberto Mancini's unconvincing start to his second spell as Inter coach continued with a goalless draw at Serie A strugglers Empoli.

Inter's erratic run of form following the return of coach Roberto Mancini continued with an underwhelming 0-0 Serie A draw at Empoli on Saturday.

A point at champions Juventus, followed by an eye-catching 3-1 win over in-form Genoa last week, seemed to have inspired some optimism at Inter after an unspectacular start for the former Manchester City boss, but the Milan club produced a laboured display at Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Inter endured great difficulty creating any chances of note in the first half, with their talented frontline managing just two shots in the first 45 minutes, while Empoli often attacked with purpose.

Nemanja Vidic and Rodrigo Palacio both went close for the visitors early in the second half as Inter appeared to liven up, but the visitors looked out of sorts at the back.

Empoli regularly threatened through Manuel Pucciarelli and Simone Verdi, though they failed to find a way past goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, who proved an effective last line of defence.

Mancini eventually introduced new signing Xherdan Shaqiri for his debut in the 74th minute, but the Switzerland international could not drive Inter on to victory, missing out on the chance to move up to sixth in the table.

Empoli were brighter from the off, getting the ball forward swiftly and attacking in numbers.

The home side went close to breaking the deadlock after just five minutes, as Elseid Hysaj's 25-yard effort forced Handanovic into a desperate save down to his right.

Inter did appear to tighten up at the back, but struggled to mount meaningful attacks of their own, with Hernanes' tame attempt from 20 yards in the 24th minute all they could muster in the first half-an-hour.

Empoli remained a threat going forward, and striker Pucciarelli felt aggrieved to be denied a penalty in the 30th minute after being nudged over by Hugo Campagnaro.

The visitors registered the second of their two first-half shots seven minutes later and, although Fredy Guarin's long-range drive was well hit, Empoli stopper Luigi Sepe watched it sail harmlessly wide of his left-hand post.

Inter appeared more willing to commit bodies forward at the start of the second period and, as a result, the visitors went agonisingly close to opening the scoring.

Sepe failed to deal with Lukas Podolski's corner and Vidic met the delivery with a towering header, but the Serbian's effort bounced a few yards wide.

Inter went even closer shortly after, as Palacio raced on to a delightful pass from Hernanes and sent a diving header narrowly off target, but Empoli continued to cause problems for them at the back.

With 64 minutes gone, Pucciarelli raced clear down the left and, although Handanovic blocked his shot, the ball ricocheted towards goal and forced Marco Andreolli into a vital clearance.

Mancini handed a debut to Shaqiri late on, but the new arrival did little to improve Inter's toothless attack in his brief cameo, as the match petered out to a conclusion.

Meanwhile, in Saturday’s late kick-off, Roma missed the opportunity to move level on points with Juventus at the top of the Serie A table as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Palermo.

Looking to build on last weekend’s Francesco Totti-inspired comeback and 2-2 draw in the Rome derby against Lazio, Rudi Garcia’s team suffered a dreadful start.

Davide Astori’s slack pass was cut out by Franco Vazquez, who played through Paulo Dybala for a second-minute opener - the in-form Argentine striker's eighth goal in his past nine outings.

Mattia Destro marked his first start in over a month by sliding home an equaliser early in the second half, but Roma were unable to force a winner.

That means Juventus will be five points clear on Sunday if they overcome a Verona side who they beat 6-1 in the Coppa Italia in midweek.

Mancini blasts ´useless´ build-up play

17 January 2015

773811header.jpg

Roberto Mancini had little reason for cheer after his Inter side produced a laboured display in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Empoli

Inter coach Roberto Mancini slammed his team's "useless" build-up play in the 0-0 draw at Empoli.

The Milan club's stuttering season appeared to have turned a corner after they earned a point at champions Juventus, before beating Genoa 3-1 in their previous Serie A outing.

But they were toothless against struggling Empoli on Saturday and rarely looked capable of claiming all three points.

Mancini pulled no punches after the match, telling Sky Sport Italia: "At times we just held the ball without going anywhere and that's useless. The strikers need to move around more and create openings.

"Empoli have always run hard and played good football. Not all of our players are in the best shape, so we still struggle in terms of intensity.

"Everyone needs to do more. It's not one or two players, but starting from the back, having the courage to take risks and play the ball. We are Inter - struggling under pressure from opponents is not our style.

"We didn't create much, sat too deep and were scared in the beginning. We didn't play from the back and that's why we were under pressure, as we didn't keep the ball."

Mancini, though, has urged patience as he attempts to turn Inter's fortunes around.

"I think a team needs time to grow," he added. "It's not like one win changes everything.

"The victory [over Genoa] was important and it would've been good to get three points here to help move towards third, but we knew it would be difficult as Empoli play great football. We didn't do enough to win.

"The important thing is to get a series of positive results. We have regrets, but the truth is we didn't do enough to win this game."

Suso completes Milan switch

17 January 2015

773459header.jpg

Milan have completed the signing of Spanish playmaker Suso from Liverpool.

Milan have completed the signing of Suso from Liverpool, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Spanish playmaker Suso had been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield in the January transfer window as he has struggled to figure in Brendan Rodgers' first-team plans this season.

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani said on Friday that a deal to bring the 21-year-old to San Siro was "99.9 per cent done", and Liverpool announced the deal had been finalised on Saturday.

"Liverpool FC can confirm that midfielder Suso has today completed a permanent transfer to Italian side AC Milan," read a club statement.

"The 21-year-old Spaniard departs Anfield for Serie A four-and-a-half years after joining the Reds from Cadiz CF.

"Everybody at Liverpool thanks Suso for his contribution and wishes him all the best for the future."

Suso made just 21 first-team appearances for Liverpool, scoring once.

He bolsters the attacking options of Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi, whose side sit eighth in Serie A ahead of their home game against Atalanta on Sunday.

Inzaghi hints at more Milan business after Suso arrival

17 January 2015
773584header.jpg

Filippo Inzaghi has hinted at more signings for Serie A side Milan after the arrival of Suso from Liverpool.

Milan head coach Filippo Inzaghi has suggested that the signing of Suso from Liverpool will not be his last foray into the transfer market in January.

Spanish playmaker Suso completed his move to San Siro on Saturday after weeks of speculation.

Inzaghi had already delved into the market to bring Alessio Cerci to the club on loan in a deal that saw Fernando Torres move to Atletico Madrid in the opposite direction.

The Italian was delighted to bring Suso to the club and hinted that his business is not yet done, with a full-back top of his wish list.

"I am happy about the arrival of Suso and by arriving earlier he can understand how we play," he said.

"We will see if there is an opportunity [to sign] a full-back. But otherwise, we will be able to deal with it like we've done with the injuries to [Ignazio] Abate and [Mattia] De Sciglio.

"Suso will try and give us a hand. I will also try him as a wide midfielder and these months will allow him to integrate with the group."

Cerci made his first start for Milan in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Sassuolo in the Coppa Italia - a match that came just a week after the same opponents had beaten Milan by the same scoreline in the league before they drew 1-1 with Torino.

Inzaghi has been impressed by Cerci's early contribution to the squad, but is well aware Milan have to show more consistency as a team to boost their eighth-placed standing in Serie A - starting at Atalanta on Sunday.

"We have Cerci and he's arrived with the right humility, he's understood the spirit that exists and I think he can give us a big hand," he added.

"We have to focus on ourselves, look at our growth, improve on this see-saw of results. We have to become consistent.

"Atalanta will play a counter-attacking game. However, based on Tuesday's match and the training sessions I am convinced we will have a great match."

'We didn't play in the first half' - Garcia laments slow Roma start

827412_heroa.jpg

Jan 17, 2015 23:19:00

The Giallorossi boss was left to rue his side's poor showing in the first 45 minutes as they stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Palermo in Sicily on Saturday

Roma coach Rudi Garcia was left to rue his side's poor start in Sicily on Saturday as his side slumped to a 1-1 draw with Palermo.

Paulo Dybala gave the hosts the lead after just two minutes, combining with Fernando Vazquez to pounce on an early mistake from Roma defender Davide Astori.

A depleted Giallorossi side, missing the likes of Daniele De Rossi, Radja Nainggolan, Seydou Keita and Gervinho, failed to register a single shot on target in the first period before Mattia Destro scrambled in a second-half equaliser.

"We didn't play in the first half," Garcia told Sky Sport Italia.

"We were on our heels, there was no movement, which is dangerous against a team [like Palermo] who are in good form, and we presented them a gift after just two minutes.

"The whole team were poor in the first half… fortunately, we rediscovered our form after the break."

It was Roma's third draw in their last four Serie A outings and means league-leaders and reigning champions Juventus can extend their cushion at the top of Serie A to five points when they host Verona on Sunday.

No ligament damage for Ranocchia

18 January 2015

Andrea Ranocchia limped out of Inter's 0-0 draw with Empoli on Saturday but fears over the captain's fitness have been allayed.

Inter have received some positive news on the injury front after scans revealed that captain Andrea Ranocchia's knee problem is not as bad as first feared.

Ranocchia sustained the blow in Saturday's goalless Serie A draw at Empoli on Saturday.

The defender was withdrawn from the action after half-time, leaving coach Roberto Mancini fearing that he would be without his skipper for a substantial period of time.

However, tests on Ranocchia's left knee indicated he had not suffered any ligament damage.

A post on Inter's twitter account read: "Tests have confirmed that @23_Frog [Ranocchia] has suffered no knee ligament damage."

Ranocchia has made 21 appearances for Inter this season, scoring twice

Eto´o close to move claims Samp president

18 January 2015

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero claims his club are close to securing the services of Samuel Eto'o from Everton.

Samuel Eto'o is close to agreeing a move from Everton to Sampdoria, according to the Italian club's president Massimo Ferrero.

The former Cameroon international striker moved to Goodison Park in August after his contract at Chelsea expired and has since made 14 Premier League appearances under Roberto Martinez, scoring three goals.

Only eight of those outings have been as a starter and Martinez confirmed on Wednesday that Everton had been contacted by two unnamed clubs regarding Eto'o.

And it appears Sampdoria - currently fourth in Serie A - are close to bringing Eto'o to the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, if president Ferrero is to be believed.

"I've met the lad, he's a champion," Ferrero told RAI Sport.

"We're waiting on the okay from Everton."

Serie A Review: Juve go five points clear, Milan lose at home again

18 January 2015

774388header.jpg

Champions Juventus took a commanding lead in the title race and Milan's misery increased with another home loss in Sunday's Serie A action.

Juventus extended their lead at the top of the Serie A table to five points thanks to Sunday's 4-0 hammering of Verona, while Milan's woes continued with a 1-0 home defeat by Atalanta.

Massimiliano Allegri's men destroyed Verona 6-1 in the Coppa Italia on Thursday and Juve were rampant once again, capitalising on Roma's 1-1 draw at Palermo on Saturday to extend their lead at the summit.

Paul Pogba got the hosts off to a fine start with an excellent long-range drive after just three minutes and Carlos Tevez swiftly doubled their advantage, leaving Verona with a huge task on their hands.

Midfielder Roberto Pereyra, filling in for the ill Arturo Vidal, eventually put Juve 3-0 up, coolly slotting in with 24 minutes to go before Tevez doubled his tally eight minutes later.

Milan slumped to a second successive home Serie A defeat and extended their winless run to four league games after losing 1-0 to struggling Atalanta.

Having withstood what Milan threw at them early on, Atalanta took the lead when German Denis - who also scored in a 2-1 win over Milan in May - made the most of slack defending with a deft finish 33 minutes in.

While a Giampaolo Pazzini header landed on the roof of the net, Stefano Colantuono's side were able to frustrate their hosts and pick up only a second away league win of the campaign - and their first since September.

Napoli left Rome with all three points after beating fellow UEFA Champions League hopefuls Lazio 1-0 in the day's early match.

Gonzalo Higuain's emphatic 18th-minute strike settled it in favour of Rafael Benitez's men, who reclaimed third spot as a result, while Lazio finish the weekend fifth.

Genoa's winless run was stretched to five matches, but they avoided suffering a fourth defeat in five as they salvaged a 3-3 draw at home to Sassuolo.

The visitors went ahead three times, with Domenico Berardi netting twice, but Genoa pegged Sassuolo back each time and ultimately snatched a point thanks to Ioannis Fetfatzidis' stoppage-time penalty.

Sampdoria remain level with Napoli on 33 points after a routine 2-0 win at rock-bottom Parma, while Fiorentina's last-gasp 2-1 victory at Chievo keeps them just three points behind.

Towards the bottom of the table, Cagliari claimed a commendable 2-2 draw at Udinese and, although Cesena lost 3-2 at home to Torino, they climbed above Parma due to having a marginally better goal difference.

Savic commits to Fiorentina

19 January 2015

Fiorentina defender Stefan Savic puts pen to paper on a new contract with the Serie A club that will run until June 2019.

Stefan Savic has ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract with Fiorentina.

The 24-year-old Montenegro defender has established himself as a key player since arriving at the Florence club from Manchester City in a deal that saw Matija Nastasic move in the other direction in August 2012.

Savic's impressive form led to the likes of Milan, Juventus and Tottenham being linked with a move for the centre-back.

Fiorentina were eager to keep the former Partizan man, whose previous deal expired at the end of next season, and the Serie A side announced on Monday that Savic has put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year deal.

Savic failed to establish himself with Premier League champions City, but has made 86 appearances for Fiorentina and now looks set to make many more.

Destro tight-lipped on future

18 January 2015

773946header.jpg

Italian striker Mattia Destro was coy when quizzed about his Roma future.

Mattia Destro refused to shed light on rumours linking him with a move away from Roma after helping the Serie A title hopefuls to a 1-1 draw at Palermo on Saturday.

Destro marked his first start in over a month with a goal, rescuing a point for Roma nine minutes into the second half at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

The 23-year-old's future has been the topic of discussion amid links to Serie A rivals Milan during the January transfer window, while Inter, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are possible destinations.

"I am a Roma player right now," Destro told Sky Sport Italia.

"My position is that I am a striker, I want to do well, to play and to score. We didn't win, but I am happy that I scored."

Destro was the hero for visiting Roma after being handed a rare start by coach Rudi Garcia.

After highly-rated Argentinean striker Paulo Dybala gave Palermo a second-minute lead, Destro slid in to restore parity for Roma in the 54th minute.

"I missed scoring goals, it was important to me and I'm happy it arrived tonight," said Destro.

"When I get the opportunity to play I always try to give my best. It's a shame we didn't get the victory.

"We played against an excellent side and drawing here is to be considered a good result. We wanted the win, but are satisfied with a point."

Samp ponder Okaka punishment

19 January 2015

Sampdoria are considering whether to take disciplinary action against striker Stefano Okaka following a training-ground incident.

Sampdoria could take disciplinary action against Stefano Okaka after confirming that the striker was ordered to leave Monday's training session due to "inappropriate behaviour" towards coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

The Serie A club revealed on their official website that former Parma man Okaka was involved in a training-ground incident and a subsequent exchange with sporting director Carlo Osti.

Okaka, who dropped to the substitutes bench for high-flying Samp's victories over Empoli and Parma, will now wait to discover what action the Genoa club opt to take as a result of his actions.

A club statement said: "On the occasion of this morning, Monday, Stefano Okaka was dismissed from "Gloriano Mugnaini" (Samp's training ground) for inappropriate behaviour towards the coach.

"The company will evaluate whether to take disciplinary action on the attitude taken later by Okaka against the sports director."

Okaka responded to the incidents by tweeting: "Rightly you read and everyone makes their own ideas ... But one day the truth will come out ..."

The Samp frontman has scored three goals in 19 Serie A appearances this season.

Giovinco to join Toronto

19 January 2015

774784header.jpg

Italy international Sebastian Giovinco has agreed a deal to move to MLS side Toronto FC at the end of the Serie A campaign.

Sebastian Giovinco will move from Italian champions Juventus to Toronto FC at the end of the season after the MLS club confirmed the deal on Monday.

The 27-year-old forward came through the youth system at the Juventus Stadium but has fallen out of favour in Turin over recent months.

Giovinco has made 130 appearances for Juve - scoring 20 goals and providing 23 assists - but will leave the club for Toronto at the end of the current campaign.

The 21-cap Italy man spoke of his excitement at agreeing the move, while stating his intention to finish strongly with Juve.

"I am excited to sign with Toronto FC today and look forward to joining the club this summer," he told his new club's official website.

"I have heard so many great things about Toronto over the years and I know that it will be a city that I feel right at home in.

"Until then, I have many things I still want to accomplish for Juventus and our fans. I will always give my heart and soul for Juve until I change shirts this summer."

Toronto completed the signing of United States forward Jozy Altidore from Sunderland last week - with Jermain Defoe going the opposite way.

Head coach Greg Vanney feels Giovinco can form an important part of Toronto's new-look side ahead of the MLS season, which gets under way in March.

"Sebastian Giovinco is a complete player with the ability to not only create but also to score goals as he's proven throughout his career in Italy," Vanney added.

"We are very excited for the 2015 season and adding another important piece to an already solid core group only makes us stronger."

Serie A side Lazio have bolstered their defence in the transfer market by securing the services of Mauricio and Wesley Hoedt.

Lazio have boosted their push for a UEFA Champions League place with the loan signing of Mauricio and by also agreeing a deal for Wesley Hoedt.

Sporting Lisbon central defender Mauricio arrives on a deal to the end of the season after making 20 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese side this term and is due undergo a medical on Thursday.

Meanwhile, AZ centre-back Hoedt will link up with his new team-mates at the end of the season.

Hoedt has broken into the AZ first team this campaign, scoring one goal in 14 appearances.

And he is thrilled to be continuing his development in Serie A.

"I'm very happy to have signed with Lazio, I feel really great," Hoedt told Lazio Style Radio.

"I'll be a Lazio player starting from next season.

"I hope to play well, I want to give everything I've got for my teammates.

"I can't wait for July to start playing. I'll try watching all of Lazio's games so I can integrate myself right off the bat. I hope Lazio can qualify for the Champions League."
