Tevez and Pogba earn Conte praise
25 August 2013

358567header.jpg

Juventus' Antonio Conte hailed Carlos Tevez and Paul Pogba as they powered his side to a 1-0 win over Sampdoria on Serie A's opening day.

The head coach has been delighted with his transfer-window acquisitions but particularly Tevez, who signed from Manchester City.

Tevez scored the game's only goal into an empty net on 58 minutes after Pogba's squared pass took the goalkeeper out of the equation.

"Tevez is working very hard, not just on the field but also off it and he's a wonderful person," Conte said.

"He is improving, as are Fernando Llorente and Angelo Ogbonna, who will take time to settle into a squad that already did so well for two years."

Pogba, who was snapped up on a free transfer from Manchester United at the start of last season, has the ability to join the top echelon of players, according to Conte.

"We started working on him a year ago and his progress has been incredible," Conte said.

"I saw his interviews in which he said he wanted to become the best in the world and I am happy with that, because in my view he can be the best."

After netting his second goal in as many games, Tevez described the night as 'perfect' and said he was gradually settling in at the club.

"It was the perfect night, as we won in a difficult arena and are very happy with the performance," Tevez said.

"It is not easy to get to know my teammates straight away but I tried to do all I could for the team."

Serie A: Inter 2 Genoa 0

26 August 2013

1080877-17219936-640-360.jpg

Inter got their Serie A season off to a winning start thanks to a 2-0 home success over Genoa.

Yuto Nagatomo and Rodrigo Palacio scored second-half goals to hand Inter all three points in a low-key encounter.

Substitute Mauro Icardi also hit the bar in the final stages as Inter's dominance began to tell.

Manager Walter Mazzarri made one change from the Inter side that defeated Citadella in last week's Coppa Italia, with Zdravko Kuzmanovic replacing Icardi.

Fabio Liverani named two changes from last week's Coppa Italia exit at the hands of Spezia, with Juraj Kucka and Andrea Bertolacci coming in for Davide Biondini and Moussa Konate.

The hosts had the only half chance of an uneventful opening quarter, Andrea Ranocchia heading wide from a right-wing corner in the 13th minute.

Jonathan went close for Inter midway through the half, turning inside the box before flashing a shot across goal and just wide of the left-hand post.

Five minutes later, Francesco Lodi had Genoa's first strike on goal, but his effort from 30 yards was dragged well wide.

Inter dominated possession for the remainder of the half, but failed to create a goalscoring opportunity of any note.

The hosts picked up where they left off in the second period as Daniele Portanova had to be alert to cut out Fredy Guarin's cross with Ricardo Alvarez poised to tap home.

Seven minutes into the half, Icardi came on in place of Kuzmanovic and was immediately involved, heading a Hugo Campagnaro cross straight at Mattia Perin in the Genoa goal.

Inter continued to press and almost took the lead shortly before the hour mark as Guarin drove forward down the right-hand channel before firing across goal and narrowly wide.

Gaurin threatened again in the 70th minute, this time seeing his shot from distance comfortably collected by Perin.

Inter finally broke the deadlock in the 75th minute, as Jonathan's cross was deflected over everyone to the back post where Nagatomo was on hand to nod home from a matter of inches.

Inter almost doubled their lead twice in as many minutes shortly afterwards.

First, Icardi hit the crossbar with a header before Perin had to scramble to his right to keep out another header, this time from Ranocchia.

Jonathan then saw his effort from the corner of the box deflected wide as Inter looked for a second to kill the game off.

The goal duly arrived in stoppage time, as Palacio ran on to Guarin's through ball before slotting beyond Perin as Inter sealed their victory in style.

Serie A wrap: Napoli top, Inter start with win

26 August 2013

358644header.jpg

Napoli went top of Serie A on goal difference following a 3-0 home success over Bologna on Sunday.

Last season's runners-up signalled their intent for the new campaign with an impressive display the Stadio San Paolo.

Marek Hamsik scored twice for the hosts, either side of half-time, after Jose Callejon had put Rafael Benitez's side ahead.

Inter had briefly gone top after defeating Genoa 2-0 at San Siro earlier in the day.

Goals in the final 15 minutes from Yuto Nagatomo and Rodrigo Palacio sealed the points for Walter Mazzarri's side.

Torino matched that result at home to newly promoted Sassuolo, with goals either side of the break from Matteo Brighi and Alessio Cerci proving the difference.

Roma also ran out 2-0 winners as two goals in as many minutes midway through the second half from Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Florenzi handed them victory away at Livorno.

Their city rivals Lazio were 2-1 winners at home to Udinese.

Hernanes opened the scoring for the hosts after 13 minutes and Antonio Candreva doubled that advantage from the spot three minutes later.

Substitute Luis Muriel's goal on the hour was not enough for Udinese to claim anything from the game.

Cagliari had to come from behind at home to Atalanta to get off the mark with a 2-1 victory.

Guglielmo Stendardo struck first for the visitors after 27 minutes but that lead was cancelled out within a minute by Radja Nainggolan.

Matias Cabrera hit the winner after 63 minutes to hand all three points to Cagliari.

Elsewhere, Parma and Cheivo played out a goalless draw.

New season, same old story: AC Milan still a million miles behind Juventus

309118_heroa.jpg

Aug 25, 2013 9:00:00 AM

The Rossoneri started the Italian league campaign with a performance reminiscent of some of their poorer displays in an underwhelming 2012-13

COMMENT
By Kris Voakes

They may be just 90 minutes into their respective Serie A campaigns, but already the distance between Juventus and AC Milan has been impressed upon the watching world once more.

The Rossoneri’s season-opening 2-1 defeat to Verona on Saturday was born out of an inability to fix holes that have been widely apparent for a year or more, while Juve quickly followed up with a 1-0 victory at Sampdoria which exemplified their knack of being able to find a way past the most stubborn and structured of opponents.

Milan’s difficulties in defence have been obvious for some time, but with no notable additions to their roster in that department this summer, the reliance on a consistently cohesive relationship between Philippe Mexes and Cristian Zapata appears unrealistic in the least. If last season they showed a significant lack of the kind of defensive telepathy often needed by the top clubs, they only added to the worry further on Saturday in allowing 36-year-old Luca Toni to bully them into submission.

While Toni is undoubtedly a striker of great repute, Milan’s defenders should be wise to his various abilities. Yet the former Palermo, Bayern Munich and Fiorentina front man had a field day in the air, finding it all too easy to drop off his markers to find space where none should have been afforded to him.

Beyond the back line, there was further evidence of weakness for Massimiliano Allegri’s side. The lack of any real physique in the midfield allowed Massimo Donati and Romulo to run over the top of Antonio Nocerino, Riccardo Montolivo and goalscorer Andrea Poli. Nigel de Jong’s importance to the side is made infinitely more evident with each game in which the Rossoneri fail to field him.

Up front, too, there were issues. Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy showed flashes of the beginnings of an understanding against PSV on Tuesday night, but against Hellas they did nothing of the sort. Back to the same two players who looked like strangers in their movement last term, they are on course to giving Allegri a serious headache in finding the goals necessary to make their defensive issues less concerning.

As if a defeat to a newly-promoted outfit wasn’t enough, the reigning champions’ dominantly efficient performance against Sampdoria a couple of hours later only served to remind Milan of just how short of the mark they really are. Where the Diavolo look lacklustre and short of ideas on how to repel supposedly inferior opposition, Juventus pressured Sampdoria until the Blucerchiati finally caved.

Carlos Tevez’s debut strike came after great interplay between Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal. It was a goal that always looked likely, such is the air of inevitability when watching Juve these days. The imperious Scudetto holders are on another plane to the Milans of this world right now, and it will take either a concerted late effort on the transfer market or a serious piece of magic from Allegri to patch up the reeling Rossoneri into a Champions League outfit once again.

Wednesday’s return leg against PSV and the €20 million bonus which comes with progression to the group stage may hold the key to Milan having realistic top-three hopes again this season.

Serie A: Fiorentina 2 Catania 1
27 August 2013

358738header.jpg

Fiorentina's unbeaten home league record against Catania continued with a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Artemi Franchi on Monday.

First-half goals from Giuseppe Rossi and David Pizarro sandwiched Pablo Barrientos' effort to hand Vincenzo Montella's side a winning start to the new Serie A campaign.

Rossi opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he placed home from eight-yards after meeting Juan Cuadrado's cutback.

Sebastian Leto then came close to the equaliser when his header was saved by Norberto Neto.

But Catania did draw level in the 22nd minute when Barrientos found the bottom corner with a left-footed strike from inside the area.

They were unable to build on that momentum, however, and Fiorentina were back in front just six minutes later.

Pizarro worked his way to the right hand side of the box before unleashing a fierce drive that found the top corner.

It means Fiorentina have now won 12 and drawn five of the 17 home top-flight matches they have played against Catania.

Montella's men sit in sixth position after the opening weekend of fixtures in Serie A and continue their season with a trip to Genoa on Sunday, while Catania will look for their first points when they welcome Inter.

Lazio wears ‘we love football, we fight racism’ message on their shirts

By Brooks Peck

Currently without a shirt sponsor, Lazio decided to wear an anti-racism message for their 2-1 win against Udinese. "We love football, we fight racism," it read, in English, with black and white handprints beneath the awkwardly phrased proclamations. This message appeared two days after the rejection of the club's appeal against a one-match closure of their Curva Nord section at the Stadio Olimpico for the racial abuse it aimed at Juventus players during last weekend's Super Cup match.

On the surface it's a noble gesture from a club that has long been plagued by incidents of racism. Looked at with a more cynical eye, it's an empty PR move from a side that often chooses to deny responsibility for ugly incidents rather than address the problems.

Incidentally, Lazio wore the even more direct and simplistic message of "NO RACISM" on their shirts when they played Udinese last year. But given last weekend's incident, it would seem that words on a shirt don't carry enough weight to influence the actions of all fans. Perhaps this why Lazio are having a hard time finding a paying shirt sponsor.

Inter announce 10-year Nike deal

309403_heroa.jpg

By Alec Fenn60
Aug 26, 2013 10:04:00 PM

The Nerazzurri have extended their association with the shirt manufacturer having first joined forces back in 1998

Inter have announced they have renewed their sponsorship deal with Nike by a further 10 years, taking their partnership with the company beyond the 25-year mark.

The Nerazzurri first joined forces with the American shirt manufacturer back in 1998, with Nike also enjoying similar deals with a host of the world's biggest clubs including Manchester United and Barcelona.

And though Inter did not enjoy the success with which they are usually associated last season - finishing ninth in Serie A - off the field their future appears bright thanks to Monday's announcement.

A statement on the club's official website read: "The new sponsorship deal further strengthens Inter's position as one of the world's top clubs and confirms its desire to continue expanding globally.

"A key driving force will be the realisation of a joint project to open specialised stores, and the rolling out of a new strategy for the development and marketing of Inter-brand merchandise."

The San Siro club opened their Serie A campaign at home to Genoa on Sunday under new boss Walter Mazzarri, who replaced the outgoing Andrea Stramaccioni over the summer.

And they got their season off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Yuto Nagatomo and Rodrigo Palacio, leaving them in second place after the first round of fixtures.

Higuain rushed to hospital

309760_heroa.jpg

Aug 26, 2013 6:51:00 PM

The Argentine striker was on a boat trip with friends in Capri when he slipped on a rock, requiring eight stitches to his jaw and two to his eyebrow

Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain has been taken to hospital after suffering a head injury while on a boat trip with friends.

The Argentine, who made his debut for the Partenopei debut following his big-money move from Real Madrid on Sunday, slipped on rocks and injured his jaw while in the Marina Piccola in Capri.

He was promptly rushed to hospital where he received a number of stitches - eight to his jaw and two to his eyebrow.

The 25-year-old remained conscious the whole time, was soon discharged and was greeted by two club medics at the hotel where he has lived since arriving at the San Paolo.

Doctors are assessing his situation ahead of Saturday's match against Chievo, but he is expected at the club's training ground as usual on Tuesday.

Higuain started Napoli's 3-0 win over Bologna on Sunday, playing 84 minutes before being replaced by youngster Josip Radosevic.

Napoli demand €100m after Higuain accident

310170_heroa.jpg

By Matthew Scott29
Aug 27, 2013 7:09:00 PM

The Partenopei owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is unhappy with the treatment his star striker was given following a facial injury he received in a boating accident

Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is demanding €100 million in compensation after striker Gonzalo Higuain injured himself in the region of Campania.

The Argentina international suffered cuts to his face after diving from a hired boat and landing on submerged rocks. He was taken to hospital in a neck brace, where he reportedly required eight stitches to close two separate wounds.

De Laurentiis has blasted the medical attention given to the former Real Madrid striker, who could be out for several weeks.

"I have not met with Higuain," he told Sky Sport Italia. "But I want to see this cut to see if I can sue the region of Campania and Capri.

"An actor, a footballer, an ordinary person - when they go to hospital they must be looked after well.

"I saw a picture of the wound and I am willing to ask my lawyers to ask for €100m in damage - a figure that I will donate to charity.

"I'm tired of not having equal medical care. Politicians must be taught a lesson."

Capri Mayor Ciro Lembo, meanwhile, defended the care given to Higuain.

He told Adnkronos: "Gonzalo Higuain received adequate medical attention.

“He [De Laurentiis] could have avoided making such comments, as despite working under difficult conditions, the medical staff who attended the player received his thanks and the thanks of his friends.

“On top of that, De Laurentiis made the comments on the condition of the player without even having seen him. I therefore don’t understand what he’s accusing the medical staff of.”

Former Arsenal target Higuain has a rocky start at Napoli, gets 10 stitches in his face [Pictures]

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013

Arsenal fans may think this was Gonzalo Higuain’s comeuppance for turning down a move to the Emirates earlier in the summer.

Higuain, who joined Rafa Benitez’s Napoli for £34.5m from Real Madrid this summer after being pursued by Arsene Wenger, has suffered a setback to life in Italy after the Argentine experienced a freak accident over the weekend.

Higuain was relaxing on the island of Capri in the Gulf of Naples when he slipped on rocks and injured his jaw.

The striker has since had 10 stitches put in his face in order to close up a gash, and pictures has now been released showing the extent of the attacker’s injuries.

Higuain made his Serie A debut for Napoli in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Bologna.

Pictures of Higuain’s busted up face can be seen below.

Balotelli: Comparing me to Ibra is a compliment to him!

Aug 28, 2013 11:00:00 PM

The Milan striker has joked that he is better than the Swedish star and says his side "killed" PSV in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has claimed that comparisons between him and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are complimentary to the Paris Saint-Germain star.

The Italy international has made a stunning impact since arriving at San Siro in January, helping to fill the void left by the Swede's departure to the French capital.

The former Inter man believes that he and the 31-year-old are very different players but joked that he was superior.

"We are two different people, but comparing me to Zlatan is a compliment to him," he told Sky Italia after his side's 3-0 win over PSV.

Victory against the Dutch giants sealed progression to the Champions League group stages and Balotelli has set his sights on winning the tournament.

"In Netherlands we didn't play well, but we killed them here in Milan. We had a bad game in Eindhoven. It happens. It is better if that happens in the first leg than the second."

Milan will be looking to kickstart their Serie A campaign with a trip to Cagliari on Sunday, having lost their first fixture to Hellas Verona.

Allegri jokes about quitting Milan

AC-Milans-Brazilian-coach-007.jpg

By Enis Koylu25
Aug 29, 2013 12:10:00 AM

The 46-year-old has hit out at speculation concerning his job, forcing club CEO Adriano Galliani to assure the public the comments were made in jest

AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has joked that he might leave the club tomorrow after securing a place in the Champions League group stage with a 3-0 win over PSV.

Following a disappointing start to the season last term, the former 46-year-old has been subject to constant speculation that he might be sacked.

There were rumours that he would lose his job if he had lost the San Siro clash with the Dutch giants and while Allegri has admitted that he is annoyed by the reports.

“For a couple of years this has been going on, so maybe I’ll resign tomorrow morning. I’ll think it over tonight," he told Sport Mediaset.

“I am a little annoyed tonight, as I read things that have been written and believe people need to be more objective. There is pontificating from the outside. There should be respect for other people’s work, but I enjoy this, as I am pig-headed.

“I am satisfied with the performance, but very angry tonight. I am very angry, fortunately occasionally we win a game and the lads allow me to have some fun too.

“They are trying to make me angry from the outside, it doesn’t work. From the inside there is a good rapport with the general manager, the players and the club.

“Still some like to write rubbish, so when I read this pontificating about what they’d do – fine, come and take my place on the bench and see if you can get the results I have."

Allegri's comments forced club CEO Adriano Galliani to come out and assure Rossoneri fans that he was indeed joking.

"I can assure you it was a joke and he sent me here to inform you of that. Let’s not create controversy out of a joke," he added.

Benitez fears 'competitive' Napoli group

302668_heroa.jpg

By Chris Kvesa26
Aug 29, 2013 8:39:00 PM

The Partenopei boss says his team will face a tough task in one of the most challenging draws of the European tournament

Napoli coach Rafa Benitez says his side have the most competitive draw in the group stage of this season's Champions League.

The Serie A side were drawn alongside Premier League giants Arsenal, last season's finalists Borussia Dortmund and Olympique Marseille in the competition's Group F on Thursday.

"When you talk about the Champions League, all the groups are difficult," the 53-year-old told reporters.

"Our group seems one of the most balanced, certainly not easy, as all the clubs we're facing have experience in the Champions League. I think it will certainly be a great challenge for us.

"Borussia Dortmund are a top level side who were finalists last season and play good football.

"We know Arsenal well and played them not long ago in London for the Emirates Cup. They have an excellent coach and experience on the international scene.

"I had my first European success in Marseille, the Uefa Cup final with Valencia. It won’t be easy there, as the stadium is a fiery atmosphere."

Tough draw for Juventus, says Conte

302615_heroa.jpg

By Chris Myson92
Aug 29, 2013 9:27:00 PM

The Italian his hoping his side call upon their experiences of last season's European campaign after being handed a tricky group

Juventus boss Antonio Conte believes his side will have their work cut out in progressing from Champions League Group B after learning they will face Real Madrid, Galatasaray and Copenhagen.

The Serie A champions reached the quarter-final stage of last season's competition, before bowing out to eventual winners Bayern Munich and the Italian is hoping the Bianconeri draw on their experiences from last term.

The 44-year-old told the club’s official website: “It is a tough draw. It is one that presents us with fascinating challenges.

“Unlike last season, we all know what awaits us now and the sensations you get facing the best teams in the world.

“We take on this competition with more experience and awareness of our capabilities. We also have a precise idea in our minds. Europe is a dream to be chased and the more we can keep that dream going, the better we will get.”

Conte then gave his thoughts on facing Real Madrid and believes los Blancos have a great chance of going all the way in the tournament.

He continued: “Real Madrid are one of the favourites for the trophy and one of Juve’s historic rivals in Europe. Facing a side of such prestige will be very motivating for us.

“Galatasaray are a team to be feared. They have notable quality and can count on a fiery home atmosphere in Istanbul.

“From our experience with Nordsjaelland last year, we learned about Danish football. Our focus has to be absolute against Copenhagen too.”

Flamini rejoins Arsenal after Milan exit
29 August 2013

358970header.jpg

Arsenal have confirmed the return of midfielder Mathieu Flamini following his departure from Milan.

Flamini moved to San Siro in 2008 after a four-year stint at the Emirates Stadium that saw him make 153 appearances.

The France international won a Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana while with Milan and left following the expiry of his contract.

Manager Arsene Wenger was pleased to secure the versatile 29-year-old's services.

"We're very pleased Mathieu has agreed to rejoin us," the Frenchman told the club's official website.

"He is a player of real quality, with a fantastic work rate and great mentality. As we know, Mathieu is a strong midfielder, but is also is comfortable playing in defence too. He is a very good addition to our squad."

Flamini, who featured 22 times for Milan during the last campaign, had been training with Arsenal over the close-season.

Wenger has now made two signings since last season, having also added 20-year-old forward Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre.
