Werder Bremen 0 Bayern Munich 4: Champions hit top gear despite transport troubles

14 March 2015

804412header.jpg

A depleted Bayern Munich overcame a travel mishap to continue their dominant form in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 win at Werder Bremen on Saturday.

The league leaders saw their team bus run out of fuel on the way to the Weserstadion, but had no issues hitting top gear themselves in a comfortable victory.

Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery joined the suspended Xabi Alonso on the sidelines after picking up knocks in the 7-0 UEFA Champions League thrashing of Shakhtar in midweek, while Pepe Reina made his full Bayern debut in goal in place of the rested Manuel Neuer.

Despite those absentees Reina had very little to do in his bow for the Bavarians, who took the lead in the 24th minute through Thomas Muller's curling strike.

David Alaba netted Bayern's 100th goal in all competitions this season in the final minute of the first half with a superb set-piece.

That allowed Bayern to hit cruise control in the second half, with Robert Lewandowski rounding off routine success with a late double.

Following their transport issues, Bayern were then forced to wait for kick-off as ground staff attended to a hole in one of the nets.

Once action did begin Pep Guardiola's side struggled to get going in the early stages.

But the visitors would have taken the lead in the 15th minute had Raphael Wolf not sprung brilliantly to his left to turn Lewandowksi's close-range header over the crossbar.

The deadlock was broken nine minutes later, though, Muller giving Bayern the lead with a piece of precise finishing.

Muller had been denied by a fine one-on-one save from Wolf after Werder had lost the ball in midfield, but the hosts failed to clear their lines, allowing him to curl the ball beyond the helpless goalkeeper from the edge of the area.

Bayern laboured in their search for a second, but it finally arrived on the stroke of half-time as Alaba bent his expertly placed free-kick into the top corner after Mario Gotze had been fouled by Sebastian Prodl.

Werder found it difficult to break down the Bayern defence, yet they almost pulled one back in spectacular fashion, with Reina forced to tip over from Fin Bartels' long-range effort with the outside of his boot.

Bartels then had the ball in the net moments later, only to see his effort chalked off for an alleged handball by Prodl.

Werder's sense of misfortune will have doubled when Lewandowski nodded home from Muller's cross after the Germany forward had beaten Wolf to a wonderful ball over the top from Jerome Boateng in the 76th minute.

Germany's World Cup-winning captain Philipp Lahm came on for his first appearance since November in the 82nd minute.

And Bayern were given further cause for celebration when Lewandowski tapped into an empty net following a neat some neat inter-play with Muller.

Bayer Leverkusen 4 Stuttgart 0: Hosts celebrate Schmidt´s birthday in style

13 March 2015

804037header.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen piled further misery on the Bundesliga's bottom side Stuttgart, thrashing them 4-0 at the BayArena on Friday.

Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt was celebrating his 48th birthday on Friday and his side's first goal came gift-wrapped as Stuttgart's comical attempts to clear the ball only fell to Wendell, and the Brazilian left-back lashed home from 18 yards to open his Bundesliga account.

Josip Drmic's diving header made it 2-0 four minutes later, with Karim Bellarabi getting in on the act shortly after half-time.

The winger tormented Gotoku Sakai on the right flank, twisting the Japan full-back inside and out before smashing low past Sven Ulreich.

More dismal defending allowed Drmic to stroll into the penalty area and prod home Leverkusen's fourth just before the hour.

Victory takes Leverkusen third in the league ahead of the weekend's action, but their significantly boosted goal difference could prove crucial as the race for UEFA Champions League qualification heats up.

Borussia Dortmund v Cologne: Klopp´s men happy with relaxed build-up

12 March 2015

803271header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Kevin Kampl hopes a relaxed preparation leads his side to victory against Cologne on Saturday.

The German giants have hauled themselves from the bottom of the table after a dismal first half of the season and are now in good form.

A five-match unbeaten streak in the league, consisting of four wins, has lifted Dortmund to 10th and if they win at home this weekend - and other results go their way - they could climb into the top half of the table.

A goalless draw at Hamburg last time out ended an impressive winning streak but there were still plenty of positives for Jurgen Klopp - who remains without Nuri Sahin (knee) and Kevin Grosskreutz (thigh).

The result marked Dortmund's third clean sheet in four away matches since the mid-season break - something they did not achieve once prior to the interval.

And while their participation in the UEFA Champions League and DFB-Pokal has made for a cluttered schedule in recent times, a rare week without a midweek fixture has left Kampl confident.

"We shouldn't be too unhappy with a point considering the situation we were in until recently," Kampl told Dortmund's official website after the Hamburg clash.

"Now we have a normal training week ahead.

"We don't have to travel anywhere and can prepare peacefully and thoroughly for the next game."

Dortmund will have one eye on the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

They lost the first leg 2-1 at Juventus but will enjoy the fervent home support of the Signal Iduna Park crowd in Wednesday's return clash.

Whether that impacts on Klopp's team selection remains to be seen - particularly given Cologne are just one place and one point adrift of them in the table.

Back in the top flight this season, Peter Stoger's side have battled well, but will also be wary of the fact they are just five points above the relegation zone.

A 4-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday was their first victory since January and that will give them confidence of doing a rare double against Dortmund.

The last time they achieved the feat was the 1988-89 season but a repeat is possible after they beat Klopp's men 2-1 in October thanks to goals from Kevin Vogt and Simon Zoller.

Cologne's Anthony Ujah attracted attention across the world following his now infamous celebration with Hennes the goat in the success against Frankfurt.

And while he will hope to have cause for another celebration, Dortmund's recent revival means a home win looks likely.

Mainz hit with DFB fine

13 March 2015

803684header.jpg

Mainz have been fined €7,500 by the German Football Association (DFB) for the "unsportsmanlike conduct" of their fans during last month's defeat at Borussia Dortmund.

Smoke bombs were let off by supporters in the 46th minute of the clash at Signal Iduna Park, blocking the view for some of the travelling fans.

The DFB has taken a dim view of the incident and subsequently sanctioned Mainz for the disturbance.

Mainz, who were leading 1-0 at the time, went on to lose the match 4-2 - with Marco Reus playing a pivotal role with a goal and an assist for Jurgen Klopp's men.

Hoffenheim star Firmino not a target for Bayern, claims Sammer

The Brazil international has recently been linked with a move to the Allianz Arena but the German champions have moved to deny their interest

Sporting director Matthias Sammer has dismissed suggestions that Bayern Munich are preparing a move for Hoffenheim star Roberto Firmino.

The Brazil international has developed into one of the undisputed stars of the Bundesliga and has allegedly caught the attention of clubs including Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern this season.

However, the reigning Bundesliga champions have made it clear that the 23-year-old is not one of their transfer targets at this stage.

"Firmino is a great player," admitted Sammer to Bild.

"But these stories have originated with his agent [Roger Wittmann].

"We are not interested in signing Firmino."

The attacking midfielder joined Hoffenheim from Figueirense in January 2011 and has since made over 100 Bundesliga appearances for the Sinsheim side.

Firmino has netted six goals in 24 league appearances so far this term, while creating seven more.

He has a contract with Hoffenheim until June 2017, but the club recently revealed they would be willing to cash in on their star man if an offer in the region of €30 million came in.

Aubameyang: Neymar the one player I'd want at Dortmund

Mar 13, 2015 13:01:48

The Gabon international would love to team up with the Barcelona forward, though he was quick to praise current attacking partner Marco Reus

Borussia Dortmund attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed that he would pick Barcelona star Neymar if he could sign one player for the Bundesliga outfit.

The 23-year-old has been in sublime form for the Catalans so far in 2014-15, netting 26 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions, and Aubameyang would love to team up with the Brazilian at Signal Iduna Park.

"One player I would like Dortmund to sign? Neymar," the BVB forward said in a Facebook Q&A for the official Uefa website, before making it clear he is more than happy to play alongside current attacking partner Marco Reus.

"You need to play at your highest level because someone like Reus is so quick and clever.

"You also need to be prepared and strong because he's both of those things."

The Gabon international also had his say on head coach Jurgen Klopp and stressed that it's easy to work under the 47-year-old.

"Working with Klopp's easy in the end. It's about watching and learning, and then it's up to you.

"There are so many great players here and it's a great club. I've been here a while now and I know very well how hard they work."

Aubameyang has been keen to Dortmund's resurgence after the winter break and has already scored 10 goals in 23 Bundesliga outings this term.

Guardiola: I can't replace Robben and Ribery

1017102_heroa.jpg

By Alec Fenn
Mar 13, 2015 15:50:42

The two wingers will miss Saturday's Bundesliga clash with Werder Bremen after suffering back and ankle injuries respectively

Pep Guardiola has admitted he won't be able to replace the individual qualities of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben after the pair were ruled out of Bayern Munich's trip to Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Robben lasted just 19 minutes of Bayern's 7-0 Champions League demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, while Ribery hobbled off shortly before the hour mark.

The Netherlands international is suffering from a trapped nerve while Ribery has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle, and it is still unclear how long either winger will be sidelined.

Guardiola hopes the Bavarians can improve their record without the two wingers in his side, as they usually garner fewer points and goals in their absence.

"We have lost quality in one-on-one situations," said the Bayern coach at Friday's press conference. "We will try to refute the statistics."

Robben has been Bayern's star man this season with 17 goals in 21 league games, while Ribery has suffered an injury-plagued campaign that has limited him to just nine Bundesliga appearances since a back injury ruled him out of last summer's World Cup.

Guardiola will also be without the suspended Xabi Alonso against Bremen, as he joins long term absentees Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez in the stands.

Pep parks the bus? Bayern Munich break down on way to Bremen

The Bundesliga champions had their journey to Werder Bremen momentarily delayed as the team coach suffered was forced to refuel five minutes from the Weserstadion

Bayern Munich may be cruising towards another Bundesliga title, but their journey hit a glitch on Saturday as the team bus broke down en route to the Weserstadion for their clash with Werder Bremen.

Two members of staff were forced to manually refuel the coach after it ran out of petrol in just five minutes from the venue in Bremen.

“Our tank was full”, said the club via its official Twitter account, but it lacked the “special mixture”.

The reigning German champions suffered no major interruptions for their preparations and arrived on time for what they hope will be their sixth consecutive Bundesliga victory.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was rested for the clash with eighth-placed Werder, leaving Spain’s Pepe Reina to make his Bundesliga debut and become the first goalkeeper in history to play in the top division of Spain, England, Italy and Germany.

Pepe Reina the first goalkeeper to play in Europe's big four leagues

Mar 14, 2015 14:30:00

The Spaniard was named in the starting XI for Bayern against Werder Bremen on Saturday, setting a unique record in the process

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Pepe Reina became the first goalkeeper in history on Saturday to play in Europe's biggest four leagues of Spain, England, Italy and Germany.

The 32-year-old was named in the Bayern starting XI for their clash against Werder Bremen at Weserstadion, his first Bundesliga appearance since joining the Bavarians in the summer.

Reina made over 100 appearances in La Liga at the start of his career with his first two clubs Barcelona and Villarreal.

He moved to Liverpool in 2005, and featured in 284 Premier League games over the course of eight seasons at Anfield.

A successful loan spell at Napoli followed last season where Reina played 29 times in Serie A, although the Azzurri could not afford to make the deal permanent.

Reina thus moved to Bayern on a free transfer last summer, but he has been understudy to first choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The Spaniard was finally handed a chance to shine by coach Pep Guardiola against Bremen - allowing him to set a unique record of playing in La Liga, the Premier League, Serie A and the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund 0 Cologne 0: Klopp´s men contained

14 March 2015

804538header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga resurgence was kept in check as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Cologne on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side could have climbed to within a point of ninth-placed Werder Bremen, and the top half, with victory but they failed to break down Peter Stoger's well-drilled visitors.

It is Dortmund's second consecutive draw in the league, following four straight wins, and it could have been worse as the visitors fashioned the better chances.

Cologne's deep defensive line succeeded in stifling the hosts' creative talents, as Stoger's men followed up their first victory since January with a hard-earned point that moves them six points clear of the bottom three.

Attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League for Klopp's side, as they host Juventus in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday, seeking to overturn a 2-1 deficit.

The match began in breathless fashion, as Deyverson got in behind the Dortmund defence inside two minutes, only to panic and waste his moment, before Neven Subotic headed just over from Shinji Kagawa's in-swinging corner at the other end.

Anthony Ujah was next to exploit the early space behind Subotic and Mats Hummels, but once again Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller rushed off his line and did enough to put the forward off.

Unfortunately, that frantic five-minute spell was not a sign of things to come, as the contest soon settled into its expected pattern, with Dortmund probing as Cologne set out a deep defensive line.

Klopp's side struggled to inject any tempo into their play and spent too much time in front of their opponents, while the pace of Stoger's frontline made Cologne a real threat on the break.

The second half started much like the first, with a great opening for Deyverson. This time it was the enthusiastic running of Ujah that created the opportunity, but the result was the same.

The Brazilian lacked the composure to break the deadlock, blasting over from 12 yards following a smart cut-back, as Dortmund scrambled to get men back behind the ball.

The hosts' faltering quest for creativity was not helped by a painful-looking injury suffered by Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He connected with Mergim Mavraj when attempting to volley a clipped ball over the top late in the first half and battled on until the 60th minute, when he was finally replaced by Jakub Blaszczykowski.

Cologne's Timo Horn was forced into a rare save in the 66th minute, as Marco Reus volleyed at goal from a long throw, but the goalkeeper got down well to turn the ball behind.

Dortmund's frustration was demonstrated by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's pathetic attempt to reach Kevin Kampl's 72nd-minute cross with his arm.

That earned him a booking and he was soon substituted, as Dortmund failed to find any late spark.

Wolfsburg 3 Freiburg 0: De Bruyne steals the show in routine win

15 March 2015

804978header.jpg

Wolfsburg eased to a 3-0 win over struggling Freiburg as the in-form Kevin De Bruyne capped off a fine week with a virtuoso display at the Volkswagen Arena on Sunday.

The Belgium international scored twice against Inter in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday and was on target again at the weekend while also helping lay on his side's other two goals.

De Bruyne opened the scoring after 19 minutes as he burst down the left before cutting inside into the area and leaving two defenders in his wake.

The former Chelsea man then steered home his ninth Bundesliga goal of the season to send Dieter Hecking's men on their way.

When De Bruyne was brought down by Roman Burki inside the area, Wolfsburg were afforded the chance to seal the points 12 minutes from time.

Ricardo Rodriguez tucked home the spot kick with Maximilian Arnold also benefitting from De Bruyne's positive outing late on.

After De Bruyne scampered down the right, he squared for Arnold to finish six minutes from time as Wolfsburg bounced back from their surprise defeat to Augsburg last time out.

Kalou facing fine after Berlin Wall stunt

16 March 2015

805422header.jpg

Hertha Berlin attacker Salomon Kalou is reported to be facing a fine of up to €10,000 for a television stunt in which he appeared to chisel a piece out of the Berlin Wall.

The gimmick is said to have been intended to represent Kalou attempting to break down the Schalke defence, with the two sides having met in the Bundesliga on Saturday - a match that ended 2-2.

However, Kalou's treatment of the protected structure, which divided the German capital from 1961 to 1989, has been met with widespread criticism.

"I nearly fell off the sofa when I saw the footage," Kani Alavi, the chairman of the East Side Gallery, told Berliner Kurier. "Here we have a well-paid celebrity increasing his market value at the expense of a national monument, without respect and with the clear backing of television.

"I am deeply disappointed.

"Just because there is no security patrolling the Gallery, it doesn't mean you can go around doing what you want.

"If he had done that at the Brandenburg Gate, the player would probably have been arrested."

Favre rules out Dante return

15 March 2015

804803header.jpg

Bayern Munich defender Dante is not set for a return to Borussia Monchengladbach, according to the coach at Borussia Park, Lucien Favre.

The Brazil international has struggled for starts under Pep Guardiola this term and was substituted after just 32 minutes in Bayern's 3-1 win over Hannover last weekend.

While Guardiola explained the decision was purely tactical and Dante also expressed his understanding of the change, speculation has been rife that Monchengladbach could be ready to re-sign the 31-year-old.

Sporting director Max Eberl explained he remains in contact with the player, but coach Favre stated there was no chance of the defender returning north.

"Dante will not come back to Gladbach. This is definitely impossible," he told Die Welt am Sonntag.

"I do not think that Max Eberl thinks otherwise. This is just blah in the media. For me, this is ridiculous.

"It's not just about the money. But we will not begin to dream."

Lahm lauds team-mates for his return appearance

15 March 2015

804734header.jpg

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm thanked his team-mates for easing him back into competitive football, after a four-month lay-off.

Lahm was a late second-half substitute in Bayern's 4-0 win at Werder Bremen to consolidate their significant Bundesliga lead - which is 14 points - in his first appearance since November, when he suffered an ankle injury.

The retired Germany international said Bayern's comfortable lead at the Weserstadion - they were 3-0 up when Lahm was introduced in the 82nd minute - allowed him to pick up some minutes.

"It was great for me to be back out on the pitch again after such a long period on the sidelines," Lahm said, as reported by Bundesliga.com.

"I have the team to thank for that because if the game had been a bit tighter I don't think I'd have come on.

"We have to win our games and it'll be good when everyone starts returning to action again after the international break.

"That'll give the coach a lot of options and it's also important that the players come back.

"We hope to stay in the running for all competitions for a long time yet. That'll mean we have a lot of games, which means it'll be good to have everyone back.

"It's part and parcel of the game for some players to be dissatisfied if they're not playing, but we're at a top team and we need a big squad.

"We've seen that over the last few weeks and we saw it again today."

Bayern host Borussia Monchengladbach on March 22, before the international break.

Bayern boost as Robben set to face Gladbach

18 March 2015

Arjen Robben is set to hand a fitness boost to Bayern Munich ahead of Sunday's Bundesliga encounter against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Netherlands international was absent from Saturday's 4-0 victory at Werder Bremen due to a trapped nerve that saw him last just 19 minutes of the 7-0 demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League.

However, Bundesliga champions Bayern confirmed on their official website that Robben is in contention for the match at the Allianz Arena against Champions League hopefuls Gladbach.

Franck Ribery, however, is set to miss out again for Pep Guardiola's league leaders.

The Frenchman was unavailable against Bremen with a sprained ankle and is making good progress, although he is not ready to resume first-team action.

Bundesliga Preview: Schalke looking to take advantage of Leverkusen heartbreak

19 March 2015

806950header.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen travel to Schalke on Saturday hoping to banish the painful memories of their UEFA Champions League elimination in midweek.

In their last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid, Roger Schmidt's men bowed out in the most agonising fashion, losing 3-2 on penalties after a 1-0 defeat had levelled the tie on aggregate.

Hakan Calhanoglu and Omer Toprak both missed from the spot before Stefan Kiessling skied the last kick prior to sudden death to see Atletico through to the quarter-finals.

Leverkusen must now regroup, as they bid to return to European football's premier club competition via their league position.

Schmidt's men occupy the fourth and final qualification spot, one place and three points better off than their opponents on Saturday.

"Now we must try to sort out our heads in the next two days and regenerate," the Leverkusen coach said. "This is obviously a difficult task at the weekend, when you played here 120 minutes, and then play at Schalke.

"But we become aware of the questions and give everything."

Schalke defender Joel Matip told the club's official website: "All the teams above us won their games at the weekend and therefore took more points than us.

"Ultimately you do lots of maths, but for us the most important thing is to focus on ourselves and collect points. On Saturday we host a direct competitor, Bayer Leverkusen, so we are desperate to win and strengthen our situation."

Leverkusen are in strong form domestically, having won three matches on the spin, while Schalke have been inconsistent of late, with just one win in five in the league.

Augsburg are just a point behind them in the race for fourth spot and Markus Weinzierl's men will fancy their chances of taking all three points from a visit to second-bottom Freiburg.

At the top, Bayern Munich's next step in their seemingly inexorable charge to another title sees them host third-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, who are unbeaten in five.

Wolfsburg, in second, are 11 points behind Bayern with nine games to go and they visit mid-table Mainz.

At the opposite end of the table, rock-bottom Stuttgart host Eintracht Frankfurt and Paderborn, who have lost four in a row, welcome Hoffenheim.

Elsewhere, struggling Hamburg take on Hertha Berlin, Borussia Dortmund put their six-match unbeaten league run to the test at Hannover and Werder Bremen travel to Cologne.

For Dortmund, too, the return to league action comes on the back of UEFA Champions League disappointment, after Carlos Tevez score twice and made another to help Juventus to a 3-0 second-leg triumph on Wednesday, as the Italians completed a 5-1 aggregate triumph.

Hannover v Borussia Dortmund: Klopp calls for unity after Juve thrashing

19 March 2015

807087header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund visit Hannover in the Bundesliag on Saturday, just three days after their UEFA Champions League thrashing at the hands of Juventus.

Jurgen Klopp's side came into the home second leg of their last-16 clash with a realistic chance of reaching the quarter-finals, following a 2-1 loss in Turin three weeks ago.

However, they were outclassed by a Juve side who triumphed 3-0 on the night to seal a resounding 5-1 aggregate success.

With 10th-placed Dortmund seemingly out of the reckoning for a top-four finish in the Bundesliga and a return to the Champions League, Klopp wants his players to pull together as they eye a strong finish to what has been a testing campaign.

"If you are not strong enough, then you can't mind going out of the Champions League," he said.

"We weren't strong enough in the Bundesliga either. We have other problems, there are some reasons why we don't have 60 points in the league.

"We have to learn how to handle situations. We're better, but not good enough yet.

"We are out, now we can concentrate on the Bundesliga. We are together, we win together, we lose together, that's not the problem.

"It's not our best moment, but it is life and we have to stay in the race."

Domestically, Dortmund have been in good form, and head into the clash at Hannover on a six-match unbeaten run - although the last two games in that sequence saw them draw blanks in 0-0 stalemates with Hamburg and Cologne.

Hannover, meanwhile, are yet to win since their return from the mid-season break, with just three points from their eight games following the resumption.

That sequence has piled the pressure on coach Tayfun Korkut, with suggestions in some quarters that his job in serious danger.

However, club president Martin Kind insists that Korkut has not been given an ultimatum, and the coach has received the backing of his players.

"He is, in my opinion, the right coach," said goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

"The coach prepares us week after week meticulously. He does a good job," added ex-Dortmund midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt.

With Hannover 13th in the table and just four points above the relegation play-off zone, victory over a hurting Dortmund would go a long way to easing the pressure on Korkut.

Gladbach target eye-catching performance at Bayern

20 March 2015

807593header.jpg

Borussia Monchengladbach full-back Oscar Wendt is excited about taking on Bayern Munich on Sunday and hopes his team can produce an eye-catching performance in Bavaria.

Gladbach have not lost in five games in the Bundesliga, while they have only suffered two defeats since the start of December to rise to third in the standings.

Wendt and Co. drew 0-0 at home against Bayern earlier in the season but the Swedish left-back is aiming for an even better result at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern have not lost in the Bundesliga since the opening round of the season and most recently went down at home against Borussia Dortmund last term, but Wendt cannot wait for the challenge.

Pep Guardiola's Bayern (64 points) have a 20-point advantage over third-placed Gladbach.

"We're all really looking forward to it; it's an exciting encounter," Wendt told Gladbach's website.

"It's always a massive challenge to play against the top Bundesliga team. We know it's going to be tricky but we can prove in this game just how good we are."

Wendt added: "We want to put in a top-drawer performance, ideally just like we did against them back on matchday nine.

"We defended especially well as a team in that match and managed to get a point.

"We need to play as a unit and capitalise on any chances we have to launch counterattacks.

"We believe in ourselves and are going to Munich with the intention of coming away with a positive result."

Wendt was in and out of Lucien Favre's starting XI in the first half of the season but the 29-year-old has missed just one game in all competitions in 2015.

Gladbach have only lost one match in the German top flight this year and Wendt has been enjoying the regular game time.

"I think that I put in my best performances when I'm physically pushed to my limits," he said.

"I've been very pleased with my performances this year and the team has had lots of success.

"I hope that I can maintain my good form and that the team can continue to get results in the remaining games."

Klopp: Dortmund can’t afford Champions League hangover

1035252_heroa.jpg

Rupert Fryer
Mar 20, 2015 11:12:40

The BVB trainer has called on his players to put their European disappointment behind them as they attempt to save what has been a disasterous Bundesliga season

Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has called on his players to move on from the disappointment of their Champions League exit at the hands of Juventus and concentrate on saving their Bundesliga season.

Last season’s league runners-up suffered a disastrous start to the season and found themselves languishing in the relegation zone at the mid-season break, but have bounced back with 14 points from their last six outings.

They now sit 12 points off Bayer Leverkusen and Germany’s final Champions League slot, and just six from possible Europa League qualification, and Klopp has challenged his players for a reap of the performance that saw them hammer Schalke 3-0 last month.

"We mustn't carry a depression into Saturday’s game in Hannover,” he said.

“We are able to play like we did against Schalke and we have to do that more often. I think it is wrong to call everything into question now."

“The main reasons for our failings at the moment is that we are making bad decisions in the wrong moments.
