Agent: Bendtner move makes no sense

The agent of Vincenzo Iaquinta believes that Juventus are not treating his client with adequate respect and slammed their decision to sign Nicklas Bendtner on loan.

By ESPNSTAR staff

Giuseppe Iaquinta, the father of the striker and his agent, has been unhappy at how the 32-year-old has been ignored by the coaching staff in the current season. The former Udinese striker has yet to make a single Serie A appearance and appears to have lost his place in the first team.

The senior Iaquinta criticised the club for treating his son in such a manner and feels that the striker's patchy record with injuries has effectively killed off his Juve career. And most crucially, he believes that the club should not have signed the likes of Bendtner and Marco Boriello when a senior player was available to provide cover for the frontline.

"This purchase [of Bendtner] I do not understand," Giuseppe told Tutto Juve. "Why spend money on him when you have Vincenzo in the team? Last year they took Marco Borriello - doing this has written down my son in an incredible way.

"I do not understand. What has Vincenzo done wrong? He was always respectful, always tried in training and because he suffered some injuries, has been shown the door like this.

"We have been polite, respectful, and yet Juve and the president do not say a word. When Juve were going through a bad period, Vincenzo was there for them. And then when he suffered some bad injuries, he was shut out like a rookie.

"It is not fair to treat a person like that. With all due respect to the Agnelli family, you cannot destroy a person psychologically like they have done with Vincenzo." He also revealed that the player had spurned several opportunities to seal a move away from the club in the past.

"There have been no serious proposals from any clubs [recently]," he said. "We cannot say we have rejected any sides, because there never were any. "In the past, before the injuries, we rejected the likes of Zenit St. Petersburg and Tottenham, for the sake of Juventus. "Where we are going we do not know. At the moment, he trains on his own. But we have never been hostile to Juve."

Iaquinta has scored 30 goals from 88 appearances in the Serie A for Juventus and is in the final year of his contract.

AC Milan are not up for sale, insists Galliani

The Rossoneri director has cited the enduring success of the former Italian Prime Minister's reign at the club, while quashing claims it will be sold to interested investors

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has emphasised there is no reason for the club to be put up for sale, dismissing speculation president Silvio Berlusconi is prepared to part with his majority share to investing entities.

The Rossoneri's summer was characterised by the high-profile sales of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, raising questions amongst fans whether coach Massimiliano Allegri's side were able to compete on an even financial footing with the rest of Europe's greats.

However, Berlusconi's right-hand man has denied one of Milan's worst starts to the season will prompt an exit from the patron, dismissing continual suggestions to the contrary.

"I really think fans cannot complain at all," Galliani told Sky Sport Italia. "I want to remind everyone that the presidency of Berlusconi has delivered 28 trophies in 25 years.

"I repeat what I have already said before - there is no ongoing negotiation that regards the sale of Milan."

The 68-year-old's declaration comes in the wake of reports the San Siro outfit's board was considering offloading shares to Russian company Gazprom or the Qatar Investment Authority, in a bid to alleviate mounting organisational debts.

Juventus' Angelo Alessio has match-fixing ban reduced

The Bianconeri's assistant coach has his penalty shortened even further and will be available for their side's crunch match against the Partenopei

Juventus' assistant coach Angelo Alessio has had his match-fixing ban reduced from six to two months meaning he will be able return to the bench for the Bianconeri's next match against Napoli.

The 47-year-old orignially faced an eight-month ban but was shortened to six on appeal but now this has been reduced further resulting Alessio being able to be involved in the top of the table clash after the international break.

The Italian's sporting arbitration court, the TNA's, took the decision on Friday, only a week after Juventus coach Antonio Conte has his own 10-month ban reduced to four.

Both their bans were of the result of not reporting alleged match-fixing while at Siena two years ago.

Massimo Carrera, another member of the Juventus backroom staff, continues to oversee the Bianconeri's long unbeaten record and has them top of Serie A currently.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be returning to AC Milan as a player, but could coach the Rossoneri, according to his agent Mino Raiola.

The Swede recently claimed he would be open to a return to the 2011 Scudetto winners, who he left in the summer for the French capital.

However, words of PSG director Leonardo was quick to dismiss his words, and Raiola has echoed the Brazilian's claims.

"Zlatan has [a connection with] Milan but it is difficult to come back. For me it is a closed topic, he is happy in France and will stay there for another three years," the Italian told Sky Sport Italia.

"Maybe in the future, but only as a coach... Is his wife unhappy? She is happy to be in Paris."

Ibrahimovic is currently away on international duty with Sweden, and will face Germany in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.

Lazio hit with Uefa fine for racist conduct

The Biancocelesti have been punished after Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe were abused by the Italian club's travelling support during the Group J encounter

Lazio have been fined €40,000 after some of their fans were found to have been involved in racist chanting during the side's Europa League clash with Tottenham Hotspur in September.

The punishment relates to abuse directed at two of Spurs' players on the night, Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon.

The announcement, which was made on Uefa's website on Thursday, also stated that the Italian capital club have three days to lodge an appeal against the decision.

Both teams opened their group stage campaign in the match, which ultimately ended goalless, with both Clint Dempsey and Steven Caulker having goals disallowed.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas spoke to reporters about the alleged chanting after the Group J tie.

"Uefa is very active on this kind of situation, and our overall objective is to kick racism out of football," said the 35-year-old.

"I can't point the finger at anyone in any way, shape or form tonight, because I didn't hear anything," he added.

Serie A preview: Top-two clash in the main event

19 October 2012

ALeqM5gFuUikkN2eVCnZNFy4-q-bYV0a-Q

Top sides Juventus and Napoli meet in a cracking start to the weekend's Serie A matches as Lazio aim to keep pace with the frontrunners.

Most of the attention will be on Saturday night's clash between table-topping Juventus, who put their 46-match unbeaten streak on the line when they host Napoli, second to the Bianconeri on goal difference alone.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon remains under an injury cloud however, after reportedly picking up a thigh strain leading into Italy's 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Denmark on Tuesday night.

Juve chief executive Giuseppe Marotta has been forced to deny Buffon put club ahead of country to be fit for the Napoli clash, saying it was just another conspiracy in a nation full of them.

Another concern for Juventus, however, will be forward Claudio Marchisio, who injured his shoulder.

Marchisio's 85th-minute goal saved Juve's blushes against last-placed Siena before the international break, helping Juventus to a hard-fought 2-1 draw against a side who are better than their table position suggests due to a six-point penalty incurred following the latest match-fixing probe.

If either Juventus or Napoli lose, third-placed Lazio will be looking to make up ground on them when they host the desperately out-of-form AC Milan later on Saturday night.

Lazio, four points behind the top two with 15 points, can certainly put pressure on the leaders if they are successful.

Much of the responsibility for this will lie with Lazio's German striker Miroslav Klose, who scored twice in his side's 3-0 victory over Pescara before the break.

AC Milan, meanwhile, come into this clash in an unfamiliar 11th place with just two wins this season, following their 1-0 loss to derby rivals Inter.

Adding to Milan's woes, Robinho is expected to be out for the next few weeks with a thigh injury.

On Sunday, fourth-placed Inter will also be looking to climb up the table when they host Catania (seventh).

The Sicilians were impressive in a 2-0 victory over Parma in their last game but Catania's three victories have all been at home.

Fifth-placed Roma will also not receive any favours on the road when they travel to Genoa (ninth) on Sunday night, although the capital club will at least take some winning form into the encounter following a 2-0 victory over Atalanta.

Fiorentina (sixth) take on Chievo (16th) with both teams coming off wins, while Parma (15th) will be looking for just their second win this campaign when they host Sampdoria (eighth).

Torino (10th) travel to Sicily to face off against Palermo (17th) who only managed to rise out of the relegation zone following their 1-1 draw with Genoa.

Bologna (11th) will make a long trip south for Sunday's early clash with Cagliari (19th) while Pescara (13th) will look to move up the table against Udinese (14th).

The match between Atalanta (18th) and last-placed Siena could be an early chance for either side to rise out of the relegation mire.

Serie A wrap: Juve go three points clear

21 October 2012

293246header.jpg

Juventus moved three points clear of Napoli at the top of Serie A by striking late to claim a vital 2-0 victory.

Juve had the better of a disappointing encounter in terms of possession and territory, but they struggled to create any clear-cut chances and it was Napoli who came closest to opening the scoring during the first half, with forward Edinson Cavani hitting the crossbar with a free kick.

However, the hosts eventually made the breakthrough with 10 minutes to go when Martin Caceres headed home an Andrea Pirlo corner just moments after being introduced from the bench.

Fellow substitute Paul Pogba repeated the feat just moments later with a terrific volley to ensure that Napoli left Turin empty handed and give his side the initiative in this season's title race.

Apart from the Cavani shot in an ill-tempered, underwhelming and largely incident-free opening 45 minutes, a well-struck drive from Claudio Marchisio, right on half-time, was the only other effort of note.

Giovinco really should have ended the stalemate 10 minutes into the second half when the ball dropped invitingly for him in the area, after he had miscued a low cross from Kwadwo Asamoah. However, after shifting it onto his right foot, the former Parma man fired wide.

With 10 minutes left, Caceres broke the deadlock, the versatile defender timing his arrival into the six-yard box to perfection before burying Pirlo's corner past a helpless De Sanctis.

Not to be outdone, Pogba, who had taken over in midfield from the subdued Arturo Vidal, made the points safe when he found the bottom corner with a controlled volley from the edge of the area just three minutes later.

The result leaves Juventus three points clear at the top of the table and extends their unbeaten run to 47 games.

In the later game, Lazio held off a strong-finishing AC Milan to take the points in a 3-2 home win.

The Rome club led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Hernana and midfielder Antonio Candreva.

Lazio looked to be cruising when veteran Germany international striker Miroslav Klose made it 3-0 in the 49th minute with his six goal of the season.

But Milan staged a late fightback through goals by Nigel de Jong in the 61st minute and Stephan El Shaarawy 10 minutes from time to give Lazio a scare.

Serie A wrap: Cassano leads Inter past Catania, Udinese edge Pescara

22 October 2012

293352header.jpg

Inter stretched their winning run in Serie A to four matches as they ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Catania at San Siro on Sunday.

Goals from Antonio Cassano and Rodrigo Palacio proved good enough to defeat Rolando Maran's team as the 2010 champions dominated for large periods of the game.

Catania had good chances in the first half but failed to capitalise on them.

The win pushes Inter to within one point of second-placed Napoli.

The home side began well, but almost fell behind as Pablo Barrientos' lofted through-ball found Sergio Almiron free inside the area. The midfielder had time to take the ball down, but could only fire over with only Samir Handanovic to beat.

Inter got back on track soon after, however, and took a deserved lead when Diego Milito found Esteban Cambiasso in space on the edge of the area, and the Argentina midfielder produced an inch-perfect cross to the back post where Cassano headed home for his fifth goal of the season.

Cassano was replaced by Ricardo Alvarez with 20 minutes remaining in the match, and the forward almost made an instant impact as he danced through the Catania defence, but he was denied by a last-ditch block by Nicolas Spolli.

The home side continued to push for a second goal and almost sealed the win when Andrea Ranocchia's header came back off the post after another excellent centre from Cambiasso.

The three points were confirmed when Palacio controlled Milito's reverse pass on his chest and volleyed home with five minutes remaining.

Meanwhile, Roma came from two goals down to secure a 4-2 win at Genoa.

Goals from Juraj Kucka and Bosko Jankovic put the hosts in a commanding position inside 15 minutes.

But Roma remained unfazed and levelled proceedings before the break through Francesco Totti in the 27th minute and Pablo Osvaldo on 44 minutes.

Osvaldo handed Roma the lead with his second goal in the 56th minute, while
Erik Lamela put the result beyond doubt with seven minutes to go.

Udinese defeated strugglers Pescara 1-0 with Maicosuel scoring the game's only goal after 53 minutes.

Udinese's task was made harder by a second yellow card to Brazilian defender Danilo after just 30 minutes but Francesco Guidolin's men did enough to secure all three points.

Other results saw Parma defeat Sampdoria 2-1 thanks to an Amauri double, Chievo draw 1-1 with Fiorentina and Palermo and Torino play out a goalless draw.

Cagliari climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 home success against Bologna while Atalanta came from behind to defeat bottom-placed Siena 2-1.

Allegri fears possible relegation battle for AC Milan

The beleaguered Rossoneri boss has lamented his club's misfortune, claiming the team have not been getting the results their performances deserve

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri was unable to explain how his side managed to end up losing, after watching them slump to a 3-2 defeat to Lazio on Saturday evening.

The Rossoneri were trailing by a three-goal margin by the 50th minute, with subsequent goals from Nigel de Jong and Stephan El Shaarawy unable to spark a successful fightback at the Olimpico in Rome.

"Tonight, the team did create chances and worked hard," Allegri said to reporters after the match. "We've got to start winning games however, or we risk being embroiled in the relegation zone.

"We paid the price for Lazio's only chances in the first half unfortunately, and must learn to avoid errors, even if there were good points to take from this game.

"Recently, the team has not been getting the results it deserves. A coach will always be under examination, but we must keep working hard to climb back up the table."

The loss to Inter during the Milan derby and the latest capitulation to Vladimir Petkovic's men mean that Allegri has overseen the club's worst start to a league campaign in over 70 years.

Despite hovering just two points outside the bottom three in Serie A, the Milan board have, so far, continuously stood by their coach, maintaining that he has their full support.

Adriano Galliani has sent the AC Milan squad on a training retreat, after the Giuseppe Meazza outfit suffered a 3-2 reverse against Lazio at the weekend.

The 68-year-old entrepreneur has given all of the Rossoneri players additional preparation to do before their next match, following their fifth defeat in eight league games.

The match against Vladimir Petkovic's men was seen as a chance for Milan to climb the Serie A table. However, the 3-2 loss means the Diavolo sit in lowly 15th position in the Serie A table, with a paltry seven points.

“I assume the responsibility for this action,” Galliani told reporters. “I do not know whether this measure will help.

“However, in the meantime, all of the players will be able to think about what is happening right now,” he concluded.

Milanare currently preparing to travel to Malaga for their next Champions League fixture. The clash takes place on Wednesday, at 20.45CET.

Napoli could face further match-fixing punishment

The Italian Football Federation's ongoing investigation may result in the Partenopei being hit with severe sanctions

Napoli could be fined and face penalties such as point deductions and player bans should they be found guilty of further match-fixing attempts.

The club has been under the spotlight since former goalkeeper Matteo Gianello was accused of attempting to rig the outcome of their game at Sampdoria two seasons ago.

Although two Napoli players, Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava, allegedly refused to help Giannello, the duo could be punished for failing to report the incident.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte is currently serving a suspension for not reporting his knowledge of an attempted match-fixing scandal, when he was the coach of Siena.

The news comes after the Partenopei were punished by Uefa on Friday, following crowd disturbance in the Europa League clash against AIK Solna on September 20.

Certain sections of the Stadio San Paolo will be prohibited from seating supporters for their next European clash at home to FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on November 8.

Berlusconi sentence reduced to 12 months

The former Italian Prime Minister was imprisoned for four years on Friday, but has seen that punishment cut as a result of a legal loophole

Oct 26, 2012 4:33:00 PM

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has had his jail sentence reduced to just 12 months, thanks to the application of a 2006 Amnesty Law aimed at reducing overcrowding in prisons.

The 76-year-old was originally handed a four-year jail sentence and €10 million fine on Friday, for his part in a tax fraud scandal.

Berlusconi, along with 10 others, was on trial after it was alleged that the defendants were involved in a scheme to purchase American movies for his company, Mediaset, through an offshore firm and had failed to properly declare payments so as to avoid taxes.

It was also claimed that Berlusconi had re-licensed the films, and pocketed the difference, making the Milan supremo some €250m.

The Italian has been involved in a number of legal procedures to do with his business ventures, but has either been cleared, or the cases have been dropped due to time constraints.

Berlusconi, who was not in court on Friday to hear the verdict, served as Prime Minister of Italy between 1994 and 1995, 2001 and 2006, and 2008 and 2011, but recently announced that he would not be running for a fourth term.

Serie A Preview: Fiorentina desperate for goals

26 October 2012

293762header.jpg

Head coach Vincenzo Montella needs to improve Fiorentina's attacking play to give them a chance against third-placed Lazio on Sunday.

Fiorentina are sixth in Serie A but have only scored nine goals this season. Only seven of the 20 other clubs have scored less than Fiorentina, who have only one victory from their past five games, hitting the back of the net four times in that period.

Lazio have scored 15 goals this season and eight in their past three games, meaning Montella will need to match the visitors' firepower, although new Fiorentina striker Mounir El Hamdaoui, who has not scored since joining from Ajax, has claimed that Italian football does not suit goal-scorers.

"I feel fine although I know that people expect me to score goals," El Hamdaoui told Italian radio station Radio Blu.

"Italian football does tend to be defensive.

"This is a problem for strikers but here at Fiorentina we continue to try to play football the right way."

Stevan Jovetic is Fiorentina's only player to have scored more than one goal with five, while for Lazio Miroslav Klose has struck six times and Hernanes has hit the back of net on five occasions.

Fiorentina will move within three points of Lazio if they win, with the visitors entering the game on the back of a 1-1 Europa League draw with Panathinaikos.

In other games on Sunday, league-leaders Juventus will travel to Catania after their Champions League draw away to Denmark's FC Nordsjaelland, while second-placed Napoli will host Chievo Verona fresh from a disappointing 3-1 loss to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the Europa League.

Juventus extended their unbeaten run in the Serie A to 47 matches last week when they knocked off Napoli 2-0 in the top-of-the-table clash.

Jose Caceres and Paul Pogba scored the goals for the Turin-based club as they moved three points clear of second-placed Napoli and Juventus should be too strong for Catania, who have the equal-second worst defence in Serie A this season.

Napoli should bounce back from two defeats in a row against 17th-placed Chievo, who have the equal worst defensive record.

Bologna will welcome fourth-placed Inter Milan to the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, while Sampdoria take on Cagliari, Torino host Parma, Pescara will face Atalanta and Roma are up against Udinese.

In Saturday's matches, struggling AC Milan will host Genoa in what will be Luigi Del Neri's first game as head coach of the visitors, while Palermo will be on the road against Siena.
