Lazio's Zauri rescues granddaughter of Polish FA president from a well
The defender has been hailed in the Italian press after reportedly being lowered on a rope in order to lift the girl to safety after the accident at a restaurant

By Joe Wright
The word 'hero' is thrown around the world of football with alarming frequency nowadays - but in the case of Lazio's Luciano Zauri, it's more than deserved.
Reports in Italy have revealed that the veteran defender, in true Lassie fashion, rescued a young girl who was trapped down a well outside a restaurant near Ponte Milvio.
But this was no ordinary youngster: this happened to be the granddaughter of Juventus and Roma legend Zbigniew Boniek, now the president of the Polish FA.
According to La Reppublica, the seven-year-old fell through a temporary cover into the well while checking a mirror in the bathroom of the restaurant, and Zauri agreed to be lowered down on a rope in order to pluck the girl from her misfortune and hoist her to safety.
Why there was a poorly-covered manhole in the bathroom of a restaurant is perhaps a discussion best left for health and safety officers, but thankfully the girl escaped from her ordeal with only minor bruising (and hopefully a few Euros off the bill).
The 35-year-old Zauri was seemingly not available for comment, presumably as he donned his cape and mask and sped off into the night in search of more damsels in distress.

Genoa's new head coach Davide Ballardini faces the toughest possible opening game in charge of Italy's oldest club; a trip to Juventus.
Ballardini was installed as Genoa's head coach on Monday after the club had sacked Luigi Delneri, who had only completed his third month in the job.
It is Ballardini's second spell in the role after he also coached Genoa between November 2010 and June 2011.
Genoa sit 18th in Serie A, the highest of the three relegation spots, but have just 17 points from 21 games and are three points behind 17th-placed Cagliari.
Ballardini's quest to keep Genoa in Italy's top flight will begin in the toughest manner possible with a trip to Serie A-leaders Juve on Saturday.
The reigning champions have a five-point lead at the top of the table and smashed mid-table Udinese 4-0 last week, while Genoa lost their second game in a row, going down 2-0 to Catania.
In the other game on Saturday, Lazio will welcome Chievo to Rome.
The win over Genoa was Catania's second in succession, but the Sicilians face a significant hurdle to extend their winning streak to three matches.
Catania, who are eighth in Serie A, host fifth-placed Fiorentina on Sunday in what could be the match of the weekend in Italy.
Fiorentina dropped to fifth last week after a 1-1 draw with second-placed Napoli.
It was their third game without tasting victory and Vincenzo Montella's side will be desperate to get back to winning ways during their trip to Sicily.
Another tasty clash on Sunday sees Inter Milan, who moved above Fiorentina into fourth last week, host Torino, who are unbeaten in five games and have won their past two fixtures.
Italian midfielder Alessio Cerci has been integral to Torino's consecutive victories, scoring two goals and setting up another.
Napoli will also be up against a team on an unbeaten run as they travel to Parma, who have not suffered defeat in five games.
Parma took a point off Juve when the Turin-based club came to town two weeks ago and Napoli will have to be wary if they are to keep the pressure on the Serie A-leaders.
In other Serie A matches, Roma will travel to Bologna, Atalanta will host Milan, Cagliari will take on Palermo, Udinese are up against Siena and Sampdoria face Pescara.
The Bianconeri are set to sign the Shanghai Shenhua frontman on a six-month deal worth an initial €600,000, with the option to extend his stay by a further year
Jan 25, 2013 6:40:00 PM
By Joe Wright
Juventus have reached a agreement to sign Shanghai Shenhua striker Nicolas Anelka until the end of the season, Goal.com understands.
The Old Lady's pursuit of a forward has been well-documented of late, and the Italian champions confirmed that Fernando Llorente would join the club at the end of the season on Thursday.
Goal.com exclusively revealed that the Serie A champions have not given up their pursuit of a loan deal for Olympique Lyonnais attacker Lisandro Lopez, while they have been continually linked with Didier Drogba after failing in their efforts to sign Llorente this month.
Despite the problems with negotiating a deal for Drogba, it seems that an agreement for Shanghai Shenhua team-mate Anelka has been far more straightforward, and the Bianconeri have now finalised terms with the 33-year-old.
The former Chelsea striker has agreed a six-month deal worth €600,000, excluding bonuses, with an option to extend his stay by a further year included in the terms of the contract.
Anelka has been linked with a number of other European clubs this month: QPR boss Harry Redknapp is a big admirer of the forward, who also spent time training with Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the window.
Juventus have decided to push forward with the deal in an effort to avoid being left-short handed with strikers for the remainder of the season, as Lyon continue to play hardball over a deal for Lopez while Fabio Quagliarella seems to be nearing a loan switch to title rivals Fiorentina.
Serie A preview: Juventus attempt to hold off chasing pack
31 January 2013
Juventus will be keen to ensure no further slip-ups as they travel to Chievo Verona in the Serie A on Sunday.
The Italian champions have led the league for the majority of the season and after a 1-1 draw at home against Genoa last weekend, their advantage over second-placed Napoli has been whittled down to only three points.
Juventus' opponents Chievo had a shock 1-0 win on the road against third-placed Lazio last week and will be full of confidence to take the game up to Antonio Conte's men.
Two of the Serie A's in-form teams go head-to-head on Saturday as Napoli welcome Catania to the Stadio San Paolo.
Napoli are closing in on Juventus after four wins in their past five games and their main man, Edinson Cavani, fired them to a 2-1 win over Parma last weekend.
But it won't be all Napoli's way with Catania having the longest current win streak in the league (three wins) and the scalps of Fiorentina, Genoa and Roma in that sequence.
Lazio will attempt to bounce back from their shock loss to Chievo as they travel to Genoa on Sunday.
The third-placed club is six points behind Juventus and are in a form dip with a draw to lowly Palermo preceding the Chievo result.
Two points inside the relegation zone, Genoa did well to draw against the Old Lady last week but have only won one of their past eight games.
After two consecutive draws, Inter Milan will be looking to stay within touch of the leaders as they travel to rock-bottom Siena on Sunday.
Currently in fourth, nine points behind the leader and only three points ahead of city rivals AC Milan, Inter would be confident of beating a Siena side that has lost eight of their last nine games.
Milan may have new signing Mario Balotelli in the squad as they host Udinese on Sunday.
In other matches, Roma - currently on a four-game winless streak - host Cagliari on Friday while Torino and Sampdoria battle on Saturday in a 12th-versus-13th clash with the winner pushing up into mid-table.
On Sunday, Atalanta travel to Palermo as both teams look to snap winless runs, Pescara take on Bologna and Fiorentina lock horns with Parma.

Serie A wrap: Napoli join Juve at top
3 February 2013
Napoli have moved level with Juventus at the top of Serie A after Marek Hamsik inspired them to a 2-0 triumph over Catania.
Hamsik scored Napoli's first goal at the Stadio San Paolo and then set up Paolo Cannavaro to double the home side's lead before Catania fought back after half-time to ensure a nervy finish.
Saturday's win sees Napoli join Juventus on 49 points, although the Turin-based club stay top on goal difference and have a game in hand.
Catania headed to Napoli looking for a club-record fourth straight league victory but Hamsik struck a blow against the Sicilian visitors when he scored in the 31st minute.
Camilo Zuniga's shot was deflected across goal and Hamsik slammed the ball home having been left unmarked at the back post.
With half-time looming, Hamsik created Napoli's second goal, collecting the ball on the left-hand side of the penalty area after Catania failed to properly clear a corner and then passing to Cannavaro, who finished smartly from inside the six-yard box.
Catania put the ball in the net just after half-time but the referee denied the goal for a foul by Gonzalo Bergessio on Zuniga and although Napoli increasingly sat back in the second half, the home side held on for their fifth win in six matches.
In the other Serie A match on Saturday, Torino were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Sampdoria.
Serie A wrap: Juve back to winning ways
4 February 2013
Serie A leaders Juventus won for the first time in four matches with a 2-1 success at Chievo on Sunday, while Napoli also triumphed.
Juve retained their three-point lead at the top with their road win, which came thanks to two first-half goals.
Striker Alessandro Matri scored the opener after 10 minutes to silence the home crowd in Verona.
And Swiss defender Stephan Lichtsteiner doubled the advantage three minutes before half-time to put Antonio Conte's side in the box seat for victory.
They were given some nervy moments in the second half though, as Chievo – who pulled a goal back through Frenchman Cyril Thereau seven minutes after the break – went in search of an equaliser.
But Juventus held firm to seal an important win that continued their breathing space over the second-placed Napoli.
The Naples-based club were comfortable 2-0 home winners over Catania at the Stadio San Paolo in front of 36,000 fans.
Slovakian Marek Hamsik scored the game's first goal after 31 minutes and Paolo Cannavaro also netted in the first half as Walter Mazzarri's side won all three points.
In the late kick-off, Mario Balotelli made an instant impact at AC Milan following his 17 million-euro transfer from Manchester City.
The striker netted twice - including a last-minute penalty - as Milan defeated Udinese 2-1 at San Siro.
Lazio and Inter – third and fourth respectively – both lost as they lost further ground on the league's top two.
Genoa saw off Lazio 3-2 with substitute Marco Rigoni getting the winner in the fifth minute of injury time.
The winners had Lazio on the back foot after Marco Borriello and Andrea Bertolacci scored inside the first 25 minutes but they staged a second half fight back.
Sergio Floccari gave Lazio a lifeline with his goal on 59 minutes before Stefano Mauri's late penalty looked to have sealed a draw.

Serie A preview: Roma´s Europa League hopes fading
14 February 2013
Roma face an uphill battle to keep their European hopes alive when they host Serie A leaders Juventus on Saturday.
Winless in six matches, Roma have slipped to ninth on the table, seven points adrift of a European berth.
Roma have made 28 appearances in European competition but could miss out altogether this season if they fail to address their latest form slump.
Aurelio Andreazzoli's men went down to Sampdoria last time out, which came in the wake of a shock loss to Cagliari.
Juventus, by contrast, are five points clear on top of the standings following wins against Fiorentina and Chievo.
Having beaten Celtic 3-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, Juventus head to Rome full of confidence despite missing the suspended Claudio Marchisio and Federico Peluso.
Meanwhile, second-placed Napoli will aim to keep the pressure on Juventus when they entertain Sampdoria on Sunday.
Napoli are unbeaten in their past seven league outings, having accounted for Catania and Parma in the process.
Elsewhere, third-placed Lazio travel to Siena on Monday in search of their first win in five league games.
Lazio looked set to beat Napoli last weekend, but were left to rue a late equaliser from Hugo Campagnaro.
In other matches, fourth-placed Inter Milan take on sixth-placed Fiorentina in a crucial clash for both sides.
Fifth-placed AC Milan will aim to bounce back from a 1-1 draw with Cagliari when they face Parma at home on Friday.
Palermo are up against Chievo on Saturday, while 18th-placed Pescara can climb out of the relegation zone at home to 16th-placed Cagliari the following day.
Genoa face a tough test against Udinese, while Bologna make the journey to Catania and Torino tackle Atalanta.
A Gabriel Paletta own-goal and Mario Balotelli free-kick gave AC Milan a 2-1 win over Parma in a hard-fought Serie A encounter on Friday.
Parma defender Paletta inadvertently turned Kevin-Prince Boateng's cross past goalkeeper Nicola Pavarini five minutes before the end of the first half before Balotelli fired a free-kick into goal to earn all three points for the hosts, who conceded a late consolation from Nicola Sansone.
Milan enjoyed the better of the early possession as Kevin Constant broke through the Parma midfield and played in Balotelli, but the Italian striker saw his effort deflected behind for a corner.
Parma looked to take advantage of the shaky Milan defence after a poor Cristian Zapata clearance was capitalised upon by Paletta, who skipped past Mario Yepes but dragged his effort wide of Christian Abbiati's goal.
The game slowed until the 25th minute as Amauri managed to beat Yepes to a Marco Marchionni corner and head goalwards, only to see his effort well saved by Abbiati,.
Milan seized the initiative with five minutes remaining of the first half as Paletta mistakenly turned Boateng's low cross past Pavarini and into the back of the net.
Sully Muntari should have doubled the hosts' advantage just five minutes after the restart, but the midfielder could not guide a cross past Pavarini. Balotelli then picked out Boateng moments later with a perfect low pass, only for the midfielder to side-foot his effort just wide of the Parma goal.
With 15 minutes remaining, Balotelli sent a curling free-kick past Pavarini from 30 yards out, doubling his side's advantage.
Riccardo Montolivo came close to adding a third in the dying moments of the encounter, only for Pavarini to deny the Italian midfielder.
Parma netted a late goal through Sansone, but it proved mere consolation as Milan hung on for all three points.
Roma ended a run of seven Serie A matches without a win by stunning leaders Juventus on Saturday, while Chievo and Palermo played out a draw.
Francesco Totti scored the only goal of the game on 58 minutes, the Roma captain finding the top left corner of Gianluigi Buffon's goal with an unstoppable 25-yard drive to seal the 1-0 triumph.
Juventus tried to rally in the remaining half hour but a blunt Roma outfit were unable to force an equaliser, meaning Napoli can now cut their lead at the summit of the standings to just two points should they defeat Sampdoria at home on Sunday.
Despite their woeful recent form, Roma began in a sprightly fashion, with Pablo Osvaldo looking particularly lively up front.
Indeed, the volatile forward threatened twice inside the opening 10 minutes, cutting inside Leonardo Bonucci early on only to shoot straight at Buffon, before then being forced too far wide by the Juventus skipper to get a shot away, after being slipped through by Erik Lamela.
However, Juventus, despite their Champions League exertions in midweek, also played their part in what was an agreeably open start to the game, with Andrea Pirlo very nearly opening the scoring with a clever free kick that could very easily have sneaked into the bottom right corner of Maarten Stekelenburg’s goal had the Dutchman not got down so swiftly to parry the ball to safety.
Rather frustratingly, though, the pace of the game dropped and the atmosphere became increasingly tetchy.
Happily, the half-time break removed some of the mounting tension from the game, allowing both sides to rediscover their attacking instincts, with particularly pleasing results for the neutral.
First, Osvaldo hooked the ball just wide after sliding to get on the end of Totti's through-ball and then, just moments later, Mirko Vucinic's whizzed the most wonderfully executed volley just past Stekelenburg's right post.
It was obvious that a goal was coming and it arrived just before the hour mark - and in sensational fashion.
Miralem Pjanic tried his luck with a free kick but it was blocked by the Juventus wall. However, the ball only went as far as Totti, who unleashed a blistering, first-time shot that gave Buffon in the Juventus goal absolutely no chance.
Juventus pushed forward in search of an equaliser but, in truth, it was Roma who looked the more likely to score next, and it was only a combination of poor finishing and wonderful defending that prevented them from doing so.
In the end, though, a solitary strike from their skipper proved enough to earn Roma a long overdue win - and blow the Scudetto race wide open in the process.
In the only other Serie A match on Saturday, Chievo played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at home against Palermo.
Mauro Formica gave Palermo the lead in the fifth minute with a well taken strike, but Cyril Thereau equalised from the penalty spot some 10 minutes into the second half to ensure the points were shared.
Chievo move up to 11th with the point, while Palermo jump off the bottom of the table to 19th.
Serie A wrap: Napoli blow chance to close gap on Juventus
18 February 2013
Napoli failed to fully exploit Serie A leaders Juventus' slip-up as the second-placed side were held 0-0 by Sampdoria on Sunday.
Champions Juve were beaten 1-0 away to Roma on Saturday, giving Walter Mazzarri's men a gilt-edged chance to close to within two points of the leaders with a win over 12th-placed Sampdoria.
But the Naples club couldn't find a way past Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero, as they were frustrated by a scoreless stalemate at the Stadio San Paolo.
As with Napoli's title aspirations, Inter's hopes of Champions League football next season took a jolt after Andrea Stramaccioni's side were thumped 4-1 at rampant Fiorentina.
Strike pair Stevan Jovetic and Adem Ljajic were the stars of the show for Fiorentina, both bagging two goals as they made a mockery of their illustrious rivals from start to finish.
Antonio Cassano could barely muster a celebration for his brilliant long-range consolation as Fiorentina marched to an impressive three points.
A Marco Sau brace guided Cagliari to a 2-0 away win over Pescara at the Stadio Adriatico-Giovanni Cornacchia.
Sau improved his season tally in the Italian top flight to eight, while Pescara's plight to battle relegation was not helped by a late dismissal to midfielder Vladimir Weiss.
Pescara are now four points from safety in 18th spot.
Genoa was able to create that gap on Pescara as they wrapped up an upset 1-0 win at home to Udinese.
Juraj Kucka struck in the 33rd minute to help Davide Ballardini's men create some breathing space on the drop zone.
Catania climbed to seventh on the table with a 1-0 victory at home to Bologna, with Sergio Almiron scoring the game's only goal three minutes prior to the interval.
Torino scored late to earn a 2-1 win at home to Atalanta, with Valter Birsa's 87th-minute strike sealing all three points for Giampiero Ventura's men.
Alessio Cerci had put the Stadio Olimpico hosts ahead on 43 minutes, only for a penalty to be converted by German Davis to see Atalanta level with 15 minutes to play.
But Birsa popped up late, assisted by Matteo Darmian, to score the winner.
Siena climbed off the bottom of the Serie A standings with a stunning 3-0 defeat of Champions League hopefuls Lazio on Monday.
Switzerland striker Innocent Emeghara continued his bright start in Italy with a brace that came either side of Alessandro Rosina's goal for the hosts at Montepaschi Arena.
Emeghara, who joined Siena on loan from Ligue 1 outfit Lorient in January, put his side ahead after just six minutes, powering a header home from Matteo Rubin's pinpoint cross.
Rubin was again the provider of Siena's second on 23 minutes, delivering another perfect cross from the left with the onrushing Rosina clearing his marker and flicking the ball past Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti.
Antonio Candreva's long-range effort was the best Lazio could muster in a first half devoid of any attacking impetus from the visitors.
Siena put the result beyond doubt just after the hour when substitute Francesco Valiani fed a pass through to Emeghara, who raced clear of Giuseppe Biava and slotted past Marchetti for his third goal in four matches for Giuseppe Iachini's side.
Lazio threw men forward late on as Hernanes saw his free-kick tipped over by Gianluca Pegolo while Ederson had a free header easily saved, but Siena saw out the deserved victory without any blemishes.
Iachini's men move to 18th place and within four points of safety.
Lazio, who could have closed the gap to second-placed Napoli to four points, are fourth, 11 points behind leaders Juventus and just outside the Champions League places.
