West Ham relegation cost owners David Gold and David Sullivan £16 million each

West Ham owners David Gold and David Sullivan injected £35 million of their personal wealth to underwrite losses and fund player purchases following their relegation to the Championship in 2011.

By Paul Kelso, Chief Sports Reporter 10:00PM GMT 04 Mar 2013

Accounts for last season, which ended with West Ham bouncing back into the Premier League via the play-offs, show that the owners put in £16.1m each to underwrite losses in 2011-12. Since the start of this season they have put in a further £3m.

The accounts, which show the club made a loss of £25.5m on turnover of £46m in 2011-12, also reveal that the club has taken a short-term loan of £12m, secured against broadcast revenue for next season and repayable in August.

The owner’s cash injection means the club’s net debt stood at £71m at the start of this season. The club’s wage bill in 2011-12 was £41m, or 90 per cent of turnover. Around half of the owner’s loans went on transfers to help the club bounce back, with Kevin Nolan, Matthew Taylor and Ricardo Vaz Te all purchased.

As well as loans from the owners and a £30m bank loan, the club also has around £4m in loans from the consortium of Icelandic banks who still have a stake in the ultimate holding company. The club will also have to make the final £6m payment on its £18m compensation bill to Sheffield United following the Carlos Tévez affair by the summer.

Meanwhile Gold has said he believes a move to the Olympic Stadium could be confirmed on March 16, though he admitted the saga had embarrassed him in the past. “I think we’re close. It’s only what I’m being promised. As we speak I’m being promised March 16,” Gold told TalkSport. “We would sign the agreement then.”

“I’m embarrassed because I’ve tweeted 10 times that it’s going to be next week or next month and here’s a date,” he said. The date comes and goes and then I give another date. But I think we are close.”

“I won’t go there if I have to look over a running track. But I believe we are in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Let’s face it. They’ve built a stadium – albeit wrong shape and size.”

Arsenal promise to ban supporter who threw a banana at Tottenham forward Gareth Bale

Arsenal have vowed to ban for life the fan who threw a banana at Tottenham forward Gareth Bale during the recent north London derby.

Police confirmed today that they had launched an investigation after an Arsenal supporter threw a banana at Bale as he went to take a corner in the 27th minute of yesterday's north London derby at White Hart Lane.

The Police are examining CCTV footage to see if they can identify the person who aimed the fruit at the Tottenham star. Spurs have also agreed to help the police with their enquiries.

Bale is sometimes targeted by opposing fans, who often chant that the player ''looks like a chimp''.

A Met Police spokesperson said: ''Police are investigating after a banana was thrown on to the pitch from the away section of supporters during the Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal match at White Hart Lane on Sunday March 3rd. There have been no arrests. Enquiries continue to try to identify the suspect.''

Arsenal and Spurs both warned before the match no anti-social behaviour would be tolerated at what is one of the most heated fixtures in the English football calendar.

Arsenal say they operate a zero-tolerance policy towards any such act, and will therefore ban anyone who is found guilty of throwing the banana.

Another point of controversy in yesterday's game came when Emmanuel Adebayor was briefly taunted about the deadly gun attack he survived in Angola.

The man to replace Nasri at Manchester City - Introducing the rising star of Dutch football, Adam Maher

Mar 9, 2013 9:00:00 AM

253263hp2.jpg

The exciting youngster has developed into one of the Eredivisie's hottest prospects and could make an instant impact if Roberto Mancini's side follow through on their interest

PROFILE
By Stefan Coerts

The Eredivisie has proven to be fertile hunting ground over the years, with Premier League stars such as Robin van Persie, Luis Suarez, Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen all plying their trade in the Dutch top flight before making the move to England. It is therefore little surprise that clubs from the Netherlands regularly welcome scouts from Europe's finest and AZ's AFAS Stadium in particular has been a popular destination in recent months.

The Alkmaar outfit have in recent seasons lost some high-profile names, like Mounir El Hamdaoui, Jeremain Lens, Ahmed Musa and Rasmus Elm, and once again have several interesting players on show this year. Oranje international Nick Viergever has attracted the interest of a number of bigger clubs, while Jozy Altidore's good performances this term have not gone unnoticed either. However, the club's undisputed star player is arguably attacking midfielder Adam Maher.

FACTFILE | Adam Maher

CmL0Ixq.jpg

The 19-year-old started his football career with amateur side Zeeburgia and quickly caught the attention of scouts from the professional clubs in the area. However, although Zeeburgia are located barely 10 kilometres from Ajax's Amsterdam ArenA, Maher did not leave for the reigning Eredivisie champions but joined the AZ youth academy instead at the tender age of 11.

Maher has since had little trouble making a name for himself and clubs like Manchester City, AC Milan and Lyon have all attempted to lure him away from AZ before he had even made his first-team debut. The youngster did not get carried away, though, and realised that the Alkmaar side could offer him something none of the aforementioned clubs could: a shot at first-team football at a young age.

Only months after turning 17, Maher made his official debut in the 3-0 Europa League win over BATE Borisov, netting his first goal for the club only 15 minutes after coming off the bench.

The midfielder's career has gone steeply uphill since, developing into one of the rising stars of Dutch football. An impressive 2011-12 campaign earned him one of the highlights of his career so far, his first full international cap in a 2012 friendly against Belgium. Maher now has three Oranje appearances to his name, his recent display against Italy suggesting that the youngster is here to stay.

His rise to prominence has resulted in the interest of Dutch giants Ajax and PSV, who are both keen to add the midfielder to their respective squads. Even though Maher himself has already expressed his interest in a move to one of AZ's domestic rivals, head coach Gertjan Verbeek has a different future in mind for his star player.

"I think Arsenal are a perfect club for him. He can get the most out of himself at Arsenal with Arsene Wenger, who worked with young talents like him before"
- Gertjan Verbeek on Adam Maher

"I think Arsenal are a perfect club for him. He can get the most out of himself at Arsenal with Arsene Wenger, who worked with young talents like him before," Verbeek told Studio Voetbal. "Look at Robin van Persie, he joined Arsenal at a young age and look what he achieved."

At first sight, the interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and City - with the current champions in pole position to land the starlet, as exclusively revealed by Goalcom - might seem somewhat surprising as Maher is by no means the archetypal Premier League player.

However, what he lacks in physique, he more than makes up for in other areas of his game.

Like accomplished stars such as Juan Mata, David Silva and Santi Cazorla, Maher's game is based largely around his technical abilities. The youngster has a superb eye for the killer pass, the passing skills to make perfect use of his vision and always remains calm on the ball as he exquisitely moves between the lines. His close control is a joy to watch, while his willingness to track back if needed makes him a dream player for any coach.

Still, Maher is not the finished article just yet and there is plenty of room for improvement. For a player with his qualities, the midfielder should be much more decisive for his team. He has scored a meagre 10 goals in 57 Eredivisie appearances, a goals-to-games ratio upon which he will have to improve if he is to make it at the highest level.

There is little doubt about his immense potential, though, and Maher could prove to be an inspired signing should he find his way to the Premier League this summer.

'Coaching Chelsea is very easy' - Grant piles pressure on Benitez

By Dale Jones
Mar 8, 2013 8:55:00 AM

121626hp2.jpg

The Israeli says the resources at the disposal of the Blues means that all a manager has to do is focus on winning, but believes the Spaniard will last until the end of the season

Avram Grant has declared managing Chelsea is easy, adding to the mounting pressure on interim boss Rafa Benitez.

The Israeli, who guided the Blues to a Champions League final defeat in 2008 during his stint, claims Benitez should be doing a better job, but does not feel the under-pressure boss will be sacked before the end of the season.

“I don’t think Rafa Benitez will be replaced any time soon,” Grant told The Sun

“But, let me tell you something, coaching at Chelsea is very easy.

“It’s way easier than coaching West Ham, for instance, because you have a very big budget and top players to choose from. All you have to do is go after the win.”

The Israeli has been earmarked as a possible replacement for Benitez should owner Roman Abramovich feel the need to relieve the Spaniard from his duties before the end of the season, but the former Portsmouth boss is wary of a negative vibe sweeping the club.

“Things aren’t going well at Chelsea,” he added. “They have made huge investments but the mood there is not good.

“They can’t be happy when they are not challenging for the league.

“They don’t like being in the Europa League and their players are not dreaming about being in that final.

“Their motivation would have been much greater in the Champions League.”

The singer, who topped the charts in 11 countries last year with her debut album, witnessed the Reds claiming a vital win over Tottenham to keep their top-four hopes alives

Liverpool are one of the best-supported clubs in the world but even the most ardent fan would have been surprised to see superstar singer Lana Del Rey take her seat at Anfield for the Merseysiders' dramatic victory over Tottenham.

The 26-year-old, whose 'Born to Die' album reached No.1 in 11 countries upon its 2012 release, was making her first visit to L4 and witnessed a classic.

The home side came from behind to win 3-2 to keep their Champions League qualification hopes alive and possibly stave off 'Summertime Sadness'.

She told reporters: "I was introduced to Liverpool by my manager Ben. Liverpool are my team but I also support Celtic in Scotland, who are my boyfriend Barrie[-James O'Neill]'s team."

You would certainly think that Lana will be feeling a whole lot better than Barrie about this weekend's football, particularly after Celtic's shock 3-2 defeat to Ross County in the Scottish Premier League.

As for Liverpool, the Tottenham win marked the first time Brendan Rodgers' men have succeeded against a fellow club fighting for the top four this season - so perhaps Lana can expect to be asked back to Anfield in the near future.

Manchester United 2 Chelsea 2: Eden better for Benitez - lonely Rafa changes game as substitute Hazard forces replay

By MARTIN SAMUELPUBLISHED: 18:24 GMT, 10 March 2013 | UPDATED: 07:59 GMT, 11 March 2013

Rafael Benitez approached Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea at the end, and congratulated him on the save of the match. A sporting gesture? A show of national solidarity? He probably just needs the friends.Mocked by the home supporters, vilified by the travellers, Old Trafford must have felt a very lonely place for Benitez on Sunday. A goal behind after five minutes and two down six minutes later, his substitutions attracted only derision, particularly the replacement of this season’s cause celebre Frank Lampard. That these introductions ended up changing the game, and should have led to a Chelsea victory, will give Benitez quiet satisfaction. It hardly matters now.

Goals: Hazard 59, Ramires 68

Booked: Azpilicueta, Luiz, Hazard.
Referee: Howard Web

He is gone at the end of this campaign, even if Chelsea win the FA Cup, the Europa League and qualify for next season’s Champions League. Benitez could end up very successful and still be looking for work by mid-May. He would never admit this, but what happens from here is as much a personal quest as any shared mission. The counter-argument is that Benitez should have started with Eden Hazard, the inspiration for the comeback, and that John Terry’s presence at the heart of defence might have prevented at least one, if not both, Manchester United goals. We will never know. What is plain is that Chelsea were the better team from the 52nd-minute substitutions onwards and created more in the second half than United did before half-time.

Answering his critics: It didn't take Wayne Rooney long to find the net

De Gea’s save from Juan Mata on 90 minutes ensured a replay and prevented that rarest of beasts, an away win for a team which trailed at Old Trafford at half-time.May 7, 1984 was the last time United lost a league match here having led at the interval, yet a three-goal Chelsea revival would not have been undeserved. Once Benitez replaced the misfiring Victor Moses with Hazard, and brought in Mikel for Lampard, releasing Ramires, the balance of power altered. Chelsea were rejuvenated and United seemingly on their last legs. Nothing Sir Alex Ferguson did made a difference. Robin van Persie came off the bench and was anonymous, so too Danny Welbeck.

article-2291043-188D50C9000005DC-422_634x408.jpg

Dejected: John Terry was forced to watch his team-mates from the bench

A Chelsea defence that had looked so vulnerable early on grew in assurance, particularly David Luiz. Meanwhile, Hazard and Mata were linking superbly to wreak havoc on the counter-attack. Rafael and Patrice Evra were sluggish under threat, Jonny Evans uncertain. Only Rio Ferdinand kept his composure amid Chelsea’s pressure, although he later lost it with Fernando Torres and was lucky to escape the attention of referee Howard Webb. A game that had seemed moribund was suddenly bursting with life. It was as if a switch had been flicked. Before Hazard arrived, this was almost a training exercise for United. They were 2-0 up, coasting, and clearly thought Chelsea offered no threat. Perhaps this was why the second-half surge hit them so hard. Until that point there had only been one team in it.

No way through: Tom Cleverley (right) closes down Chelsea's Demba Ba

You can’t give United a two-goal lead and get away with it, is the pervading logic, although Chelsea did. The first attack of significance, a raking long ball from Michael Carrick, picked out Javier Hernandez, who had been given too much space by Gary Cahill. This error would have been without cost, however, had Petr Cech not come bounding from his goal in a forlorn attempt to sweep up. Hernandez, judging the situation perfectly, lobbed a header into the far corner of the net. It is often forgotten that the player who is most commonly hard done by at United is the Mexican striker, who would be a favourite son at most clubs in the Premier League — certainly Chelsea, given the problems they have had up front since Didier Drogba left.

It soon got worse for the visitors. Moses fouled Nani wide and Wayne Rooney stood over the free-kick. After the week he has had, one almost knew the script and he did not disappoint. He whipped the ball in, Luiz, Demba Ba and Evans missed it, and the ball flew directly into the net past a startled Cech. Chelsea looked done and United should have pressed home their advantage.Hernandez came close at the near post from a cross by Nani, while Rooney had a shot well saved from a low ball in from Evra, which Luiz then inexplicably headed towards his goal while attempting to clear. Cech was equal to it yet again.

Fightback complete: Ramires celebrates with Oscar (left) after scoring the equaliser

To encapsulate Chelsea’s ineffectuality, a nice one-two between Moses and Mata ended with the Nigeria forward hitting a shot so wild it nearly found the corner flag. They looked a side low on confidence, class and the wit required to mount a revival against opposition of this quality. What changed? Hazard changed. He came on and refused to sink into the torpor that had previously affected his team-mates. He arrived and set about a United team that may still be feeling the hangover of Champions League defeat. He took the initiative and went straight to the heart of United’s weakness this season: the defence.Within seven minutes, Chelsea were back in the game. Mata laid the ball out to Hazard on the left, who capitalised on naivety from Rafael to cut inside and curl an exquisite shot past De Gea.

Banishing the blues: Ramires (left), Azpilicueta and Mata (right) salute the travelling army of Chelsea fans

Nine minutes later, Chelsea were level and in the ascendancy. The goal came from a counter-attack inspired by Luiz. Deployed in central defence, he grew into a good game, yet his best moments invariably put one more in mind of a defensive midfield player. He brought the ball out from the back with urgency, finding Ba, who moved it on quickly to Oscar and then Ramires on the overlap. His shot took a little kick off the pitch, sending it beyond the reach of De Gea, who got his fingertips to the ball, but without enough firmness to keep it out. From there, Chelsea were always likelier to score again.

Better the devil you know: Sir Alex Ferguson walks with mascot Fred the Red

They had shots from range, kept out by De Gea with varying degrees of conviction, but his stop that saved the day was outstanding. Luiz crossed for Mata, who brought the ball down, beat Evans and then fired a low shot which De Gea just succeeding in diverting for a corner. The keeper competently gathered another late, late effort from Mata, but it his 90th-minute intervention that stood out. Benitez did not find time for niceties with Ferguson but, with his players offering collective thanks to the travelling support, he made a point of singling out De Gea for a handshake. He really had nowhere else to go.

Manchester United boss Ferguson refused to shake Benitez’s hand before the tie and they are at loggerheads after holders Chelsea forced a replay with a 2-2 draw. Rio Ferdinand could face FA action after a clash with Chelsea substitute Fernando Torres in the 86th minute.

Hoeness criticises money-driven Manchester United owners

The German side's president believes owners should have an emotional attachment to the club, rather than just seek the financial gains, using the Glazer family as an example

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has criticised football owners who have no emotional attachment to their club and are just driven by money, using the Glazer family and their ownership of Manchester United as an example.

Hoeness was a success at Bayern as a player, winning three Bundesliga titles before becoming their president, and has blasted United's American ownership for not caring enough about the club.

"At Bayern we don't look always for short-term success. I've won about 20 titles," Hoeness told The Sun.

"To win the 21st title I'll not sell out the club. But if somebody comes in who's won nothing, he wants to win quickly and under this pressure he makes decisions which can be very difficult.

"I do not compare ourselves to United for instance which is a very big club and famous and one I admire greatly. But Mr Glazer didn't know where Manchester was 20 years ago. He doesn't do it because he loves United. He wants to make money.

"Football, you do with your heart. I have no problem with people from Arabia or Russia but they should have a connection to the club, from the heart."

Hoeness believes the German game, which is admired by many, is different to that in England and much is down to the cheaper ticket prices which lead to higher average attendances.

He explained: "I only want to have big sporting success on a sound economic basis. It's no fun to win the championship or Champions League with a £50-£60 million loss.

"The 12,000 cheap tickets are for young people and the people who cannot afford it otherwise. Football must always be affordable.

"When you only pay €15 [£12] you can't say 'I hate these millionaires' because you cannot finance the millionaires with €15. The €15 tickets are standing seats behind the goals. Our most expensive season ticket is around €800 [£697]."

Hoeness, however, praised Arsenal, who meet Bayern Munich in the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie on Wednesday, for their financial model.

"I've a very good opinion about Arsenal's people and how they think. They do it correctly," he added.

"At the moment, OK, they have some problems in the squad but in their financial behaviour they are correct.

"If Mr Kroenke says, 'I want to make money' then he has to find people who love the club. Arsene Wenger for a long time has been a good icon for the club. He has done a great job."

Rio Ferdinand: Footballers are overpaid compared to soldiers

The Manchester United star and Goal Rich List entrant discusses player wealth, David Beckham, charity work and giving the right advice to young teammates

EXCLUSIVE
By Kris Voakes

Manchester United star and Goal Rich List entrant Rio Ferdinand believes footballers are overpaid compared to members of the armed forces.

Speaking exclusively to Goalcom, the defender, who ranks No.10 in our definitive index of the world’s wealthiest footballers, admitted that people in other professions are more worthy of the kind of riches available to players in the modern era.

"Are we overpaid compared to the public service people? The army that serve our country? I'd say definitely," said Ferdinand.

"But we don't get paid as much as athletes from a lot of other sports - the golfers, tennis players, basketball players, the baseball stars, they get paid ridiculous money compared to what we get paid."

Ferdinand, 34, believes his former team-mate David Beckham, who tops the Goal Rich List with a £175 million fortune, has shown how a knack for business can maximise a player’s earning potential.

"I think he's a great advert for how you handle your image,” said Ferdinand.

"It looks like the perfect way, because he's always on the front pages if he does anything, [but] you've got him on one hand and you've got Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs on the other, and they chose the other way. Giggsy could still go in a magazine if he wanted to, and I'm sure your list reflects that."

Ferdinand also has plenty of interests outside the game which have helped him to amass his personal fortune.

"I've always been interested in business, even since I was a kid I've done things a little bit different[ly] to my peers.

"Football has always been my number one passion and always will be, but to keep my mind off being in the doldrums sometimes after games etc. I keep my mind busy by doing business stuff.

"I've got my magazine, the digital No.5 Magazine, my restaurant and obviously my No.5 clothing brand that's taking off at the moment and doing really well."

Ferdinand’s £42m fortune puts him in amongst the 10 richest footballers playing the game today, but he is quick to point out that players have their ways of putting something back into their communities.

"I think it's imperative we give back. Ninety-nice per cent of footballers do stuff for their charities, whether it be their local charities or through the clubs.

"My charity, the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, is really close to my heart in helping young kids and we've had a couple of thousand kids go through the courses that we provide to give them a chance to get on in life, to attain qualifications and to give them a foothold in some sort of business or education.

"I think where you grow up definitely [gives you motivation], I use it as an inspiration.

"I managed to move my mum and dad, and my brothers and sisters out of the area. But we've got family and friends there and we visit all the time.

“Sometimes if you're surrounded by some negative aspects that go on in your community, then you can get in trouble, but I wouldn't change my upbringing and where I grew up for anything."

The 81-cap defender places a lot of stock in the advice shared between footballers for the masses of cash earned in the modern era.

"I think being a senior player in the changing room that young players do sometimes come to you and ask your advice on how to deal with certain situations financially.

"I've got a financial advisor who looks after my finances, but you've got to take a full interest in it. When my advisor's get anything to talk to me about - tax situations and different investments - I like to have a good thorough look through it and [gain] knowledge of what is going on before I commit to it, so that's the kind of information that I pass on.

"When I was younger I maybe jumped into relationships with different financial people too quickly, but I think you've got to learn from those experiences and the sooner you learn, the better. The current people I've been with, I've been with for around 12 years now, and they've been good by me."

Hoeness reveals Wenger talks

The Arsenal manager has been a frequent target for the German side over the years, with the Gunners preparing for the Champions League last 16 return leg in Bavaria on Wednesday

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has revealed that the German club have repeatedly attempted to hire Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger over the years.

The news comes as Arsenal are preparing for the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Bayern at the Allianz Arena, with the Gunners looking to overturn a 3-1 deficit.

With the north London club off the pace in the league and out of the FA Cup, Wenger now looks set to preside over his eighth-straight trophyless season at Arsenal.

However, Hoeness has been full of praise for the Frenchman and has admitted the club have repeatedly tried to lure Frenchman in the past.

"We did try to get him at Bayern Munich a few times," he told The Sun.

"Even before he went to Japan, Franz Beckenbauer and I went to Nice and discussed with him and everything was clear, but then at the end of the day he decided to go to Japan.

"We were very surprised. From Japan he went to Arsenal and over the years, whenever we were looking for a new coach, Wenger was always one we considered.

"He’s a very serious person, very strong and has a very good idea about the game. There have been a few moments where we have discussed his name over the years.

"He has always remained loyal to Arsenal which is fantastic behaviour. But it is true we wanted him at Bayern a few times."

Exclusive: Modric eyes move to Manchester United... just days after sending them packing in the Champions League

By IAN LADYMAN PUBLISHED: 23:00 GMT, 11 March 2013 | UPDATED: 08:26 GMT, 12 March 2013

Manchester United’s Champions League heartbreaker Luka Modric still has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford. Real Madrid star Modric smashed in a wonder goal to help the Spanish champions beat United on a controversial night of European drama in Manchester a week ago. Now it has emerged that the 27-year-old Croatia midfielder still harbours dreams of a move back to the Barclays Premier League with United.

article-0-18766594000005DC-547_634x375.jpg

Heartbreaker: Luka Modric's goal sent Real Madrid through at the expense of Manchester United

Modric was high on the wishlist of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson two summers ago as he tried to replace Paul Scholes. But United were put off by the prospect of another summer of haggling with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, with whom they clashed over the purchase of Dimitar Berbatov in 2008. Modric eventually left White Hart Lane for Real in a £33million deal last summer but has not been a guaranteed starter in Jose Mourinho’s team and his goal at Old Trafford last week was only his second of a difficult season. The diminutive midfielder is not in a rush to quit Real but did let it be known when in Manchester last week that he would be very keen on a future switch to Old Trafford. Since missing out on Modric first time round, United have bought Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa.

Really difficult: Modric has found regular first-team football hard to come by in Madrid

Nevertheless, Scholes is expected to retire this summer, Ryan Giggs has perhaps just a season left and Wayne Rooney will attract strong interest from PSG and Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Still only 27, Modric is young enough to tempt Ferguson, who has been a huge admirer since he arrived in England from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008. United, meanwhile, are still waiting to find out if defender Rio Ferdinand will be punished by the FA for an off-the-ball clash with Fernando Torres during Sunday’s 2-2 FA Cup draw with Chelsea.

Controversial: Rio Ferdinand is waiting to hear if he'll be punished by the FA

The FA are likely to make a decision this morning, while Ferdinand himself has warned that United cannot let their Champions League setback affect the rest of the season. He said: ‘That won’t happen. Podolski headed for Gunners exit as Juventus line up £15m bid

By CHARLIE SKILLEN PUBLISHED: 08:54 GMT, 12 March 2013 | UPDATED: 08:55 GMT, 12 March 2013

Lukas Podolski could be on his way out of the Emirates after Juventus and Atletico Madrid have both shown an interest in the Arsenal striker. Podolski, who moved to the Emirates from Cologne last summer in a £10.9 million deal, has netted 13 times for the Gunners this season but has recently fallen out of favour with manager Arsene Wenger. Wenger believes his work-rate has dropped since he first arrived in London, and his last three league appearances have come from the bench.

Flying high: Juventus believe a £15 million bid could part Arsenal with Podolski, in action against Spurs

Podolski is also set to miss the Champions League clash with his former club Bayern Munich with an ankle injury.Juventus are the front-runners for Podolski’s signature, and believe a £15 million could tempt Arsenal to part with the German striker. The north London club would want a profit on what they paid for Podolski, while the Serie A giants have the resources to beat his current deal of £100,000 a week.

Out of favour: Arsene Wenger has dropped Podolski to the bench for the last three Premier League games

Podolski’s last goal for the club came in the first leg against Bayern last month, which saw Arsenal lose 3-1 at the Emirates, facing a difficult task to overcome two away goals in Wednesday’s clash. The striker is not the only injury concern ahead of the match, as midfielder Jack Wilshere is ruled out with the ankle injury he picked up in the north London derby against Tottenham nine days ago, while full-back Bacary Sagna could also miss out. Arsenal go into the Bayern match knowing they are English football’s last hope for representation in the quarter-finals after Manchester United’s elimination against Real Madrid last week.

Manchester United to spend £500,000 on new Old Trafford pitch

The Premier League leaders have played on the same grass for six years, but will need to replace it at the end of the season after it became boggy over the Christmas period

Manchester United will spend £500,000 this summer to relay their worn-out Old Trafford pitch.

Sir Alex Ferguson has requested new grass after the current turf became sunken and boggy during the course of the season, particularly over the Christmas period.

United have already spent around £500,000 in recent years trying to keep their existing pitch in good shape, including patchwork repairs over the last few months.

A hybrid pitch, made up of synthetics and grass, will be installed by Dutch company Desso the day after United's final home match of the campaign against Swansea on May 12 and will take two-and-a-half months to bed in.

Desso are a market leader and have provided the current pitch at Wembley as well as Premier League rivals Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.

The high stands at Old Trafford prevent a large amount of sun access and groundsman Tony Sinclair has been using sun lamps on the pitch at every opportunity.

But Ferguson recently criticised the quality of the surface, saying that it was too heavy for midfielder Darren Fletcher to play on as he battles back to fitness after a chronic bowel condition.

"The pitches over the last few weeks have not suited Darren," Ferguson said in January. "They are really heavy pitches. Unfortunately, Old Trafford seems to have collapsed in the last two weeks.

"We have had six great years out of the pitch. Our groundsman, Tony Sinclair, has done a fantastic job. But it is looking tired now and I think we will have a new pitch in the summer."
