The membership of “Vote the PAP out” Facebook set up by online critic Alex Tan has doubled in less than a day. It is dedicated to voting Singapore’s ruling party PAP out of office.
When the Temasek Review published an article on it two days ago at 4pm, it had 140 friends whose numbers increased to more than 300 within a day and nearing 400 now.
More than twenty discussion threads were started so far covering a wide range of issues from the ruling party’s pro-foreigner policies to the need for accountability in the government.
The alarming speed at which Singaporeans, many of whom do not belong to any political parties, are joining it is a reflection of a groundswell of discontent and disaffection against the ruling party.
The YPAP Facebook has only slightly more than 2,000 members. At the rate the membership of “Vote the PAP out” Facebook is growing, it will probably exceeds the YPAP’s pretty soon.
Despite widespread resentment and frustration on the ground, the ruling party seems oblivious to the concerns of the people.
Judging from recent comments made by leaders from the ruling party, it appears that there will be no wholesale changes to its liberal immigration policy.
In an interview with National Geographic magazine, Singapore’s octogenarian strongman Lee Kuan Yew admitted that many Singaporeans are unhappy with the influx of immigrants.
“Over time, Singaporeans have become less hard-driving and hard-striving. This is why it is a good thing that the nation has welcomed so many Chinese immigrants.” Lee was quoted saying.
Lee describes the country’s new subjects as “hungry,” with parents who “pushed the children very hard.”
“If native Singaporeans are falling behind because the spurs are not stuck into the hide, that is their problem,” he quipped.
Radin Mas Community Club, under Lee’s constituency, Tanjong Pagar will be organizing a New Year party for new citizens and PRs. Though Singaporeans are “invited” as well, it is obvious who the target audience is.
With the next election coming soon, the ruling party is encouraging PRs to take up Singapore citizenship. Education Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen announced a few days ago that school fees for PRs studying in Singapore primary and secondary schools will be raised in 2011.
For some inexplicable reason, Lee’s interview with the National Geographic was not reported by the sycophanic state media which will regurgitate every single word he said faithfully.
The “Vote the PAP out” Facebook will probably see a surge in readership if Lee’s callous remarks about Singaporeans are publicized to a larger audience.
