“SPH reporrters have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not”.

SunT regularly features the investment “geniuses” of S’pore. They all so smart, always make money. In the past, these stories regularly appeared in ST and, even BT.

Many years ago, I asked people in SPH, editors and reporters, how SPH goes about verifying these tales of investment prowess. The answers were evasive, avoided the issue, when they were answered at all. Often I was ignored.

Only one person, someone who had moved on from SPH, gave me a straight answer. She told me to read the stories carefully. It was always “XXX said he made millions” etc. It never (well almost never) said “XXX made millions’. So it seems that the stories on these investment “geniuses”, were stories based on what they said, not on verifiable facts.

Now go read those SunT pieces again. In the main, it is a straight forward piece of “he said”. No attempt at verification or analysis like like when SPH reports ministerial statements. But this doesn’t mean the SPHreporters and editors are “not professional”: readers are daft. They “have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not”: “O foolish and senseless people”.

SPH (and CNA/Mediacorp) news employees are reporters, not journalists.

To call them 'journalists' would be a grave insult to real journalists everywhere around the world.

Personally, reading the SunT and esp these success stories is like a breath of fresh air away from the ST daily grinding of news on crime, natural disasters, sexual deviance etc.

So can we don't go nick-picking here, please?

Beyond the reporters are the sub editors, deputy editors, editors, managing editor, editor in chief. Not so easy that what they want to write will be shown.

I can't understand why the current generation of Singaporeans have such a limited learning capacity. For example, I've been teaching them that "advise" is a verb and "advice" is a noun for more than a decade with ZERO success.

I've pretty much given up. I find it easier to teach my dog new tricks.

I have a German Shepherd.

I had one and spent a fortune looking after her. She spent a good 18 years with me. Great and intelligent dog. Very adorable and very obedient. A very good guard dog. But hit by many diseases including cancer of he breast.....and most common of all, repeated and severe ear infections.
