Some may recall this back in yr NS days in the earlier part of the 2000s. I am unsure if it is still being conducted that way. A team of 2 people will come to yr camp to do survey and ask u to shade the paper with dots with pencil (like the exam papers u took during PSLE). We all know this is a survey conducted by Mindef.
I recall that this event where these two “butch” looking females came to my camp to do this survey . They were authoritative to us and mentioned that the survey can be tracked because the papers were in order of number.
Now this is ridiculous , because it is supposed to be a survey and a survey requires honest opinion.
These 2 “butches were giving some “veiled threats” that they were able to track the survey to its participant (possibly to make us give positive ratings in the survey)
It was only later I realised that this is how Mindef probably meets their “positive KPI”.
Absolutely shameless, Mindef! Shame on those 2 “butches”. Both of u give “veiled threats” to get positive feedback from us and keep us from voicing our own opinions during the survey. On that day I realised the real Singapore, a place where tyranny rules and myth of democracy prevails.
We all know how it is. We NSFs have gone through that sucky system where a rosy picture is painted all the time to the public and to our parents.
Is there democracy in this country?
I doubt so. If u are free to walk wherever u want, or free to do whatever u want is not democracy. True Democracy is freedom of ideas, free speech and the right to voice one’s opinion.
A large organisation needs to get “forced positive survey results” from us to look good. I feel sorry for this country as it is going down the drain. This incident has left a deep scar in my memory.

My old school used to run an assembly programme devoted to highlighting our
school’s achievements for our students, on the week we were scheduled for our
climate survey. Not really wrong I guess? No threat – just a colourful cheery
reminder of all the good things the school has done for them? Interesting though
– how can we calibrate such surveys then?

For teachers, our survey was done via unique links emailed to us – to an
external consultant’s website. Which means our identity was potentially
trackable. I’m not sure how honest my colleagues were – I was quite honest.
School management bought us all a lousy bun and packet drink. That’s nice of
them but it stands out – because usually we don’t get stuff. It’s at least
awkward, and potentially contemptible, to try to buy the goodwill of staff like
this.

But – yes – too much wayang in civil service. Top management needs to find
new ways to obtain information that circumvents wayang. Such as surprise school
visits and classroom observations. I didn’t always run a great class myself too
– but that’s the truth, and MOE should know it. I can’t do great classes if I
don’t have the time to prepare, if I spend more time marking than planning,
etc.
