The opposiition should ask how many MPs are actually living in the constituency they represent. How can u represent people if u are not living there and aware of the problems unique to their area? The MP office is useless as they are only visiting it on an occasionally visit. The MPs must be made to live there, shop there, walk among the people they represent on a daily basis, send their children to the same schools in the area, etc. Most countries do it like this, including the US. If the PAP claim to truly represent the people, they must do this and back their words up.

There is no area in Singapore where there are unique problems. If you're not a member of the elite group and you're not an FT, every square foot of the country is equally fucked up.

Boss Leong Sam,

This is the first anti-PAP statement for the day.

Would you be kind enough to confirm that yr current propotion is 60% pro-PAP and 40% against PAP.

I will be grateful for yr kind & urgent confirmation

Salamat

They should have the option of not staying in a HDB flat if they don't want. But its true that in other countries, MPs usually stay in the constituency area which they serve.

For example, Kevin Rudd is a Queensland native in Australia. Naturally as an MP, he represents the Griffith area over there. President Obama's home state is Illnois, and his hometown is Chicago. He used to be the state senator which represented the Hyde Park, and South Side of Chicago.

Problem with you is that you see everything as pro-PAP or anti-PAP. If you observe, Sam has a certain set of principles. Firstly, he hates welfare. Secondly, he hates employees who behave like their employers owe them a living. But he thinks Singapore is screwed up in other ways.

He doesn't care about being pro-PAP, anti-PAP, pro-WP, anti-WP etc. Pity though that he doesn't agree that the MONGREL who bit his masters' hands LOUDHAILER chee soon juan is a clown.

U must be joking. Every square foot of the country is fucked up, but some areas are more fucked up than others. u just go around to the various estates and u can tell the difference.

They should absolutely be made to stay in their constituency. Whether they stay in a HDB flat or private condo, that is up to them. In addition, their children should also go to schools in the same area. They should shop in the same stores and wet markets. Than they can really see what its like. When they see beggars accost them daily, PRC pros roaming around, people sleeping on the void decks etc. Maybe they will come down from their high horses.

That's too strict a criteria brother. Even Obama's Hyde Park home in Chicago is not in the middle of a slum. And his kids, before they went to Sidwell Friends in D.C was studying in his former university's school for elementary-going kids, which annual fees were like $22,000 per year- equivalent to what is an annual uni tuition fee for anyone studying in Australia and New Zealand.

There is one time during a grassroot walkathon. I was nearby and I overheard this MP giving a remark to his grassroot committee leader.

"it's a good thing that I don't stay in the constituency that I served, or else, everyday will have people coming to knock on my door and complain."

In a way, he is wrong to think this way.
However, given thought with regards to human mentality, even if you run your constituency very well, even if there is nothing much to complain about, people will still find a bone from an egg.

The crux here is personal space. If Singaporeans give their MPs personal space and allow them a zone of privacy, then maybe some of the more reasonable PAP MPs may start considering staying in the area which they represent.

Oh and by the way, PM Kevin Rudd, because of his job these days, isn't in Griffith as much as before. He now stays in Canberra at the Lodge or near Sydney because of his job. He does, however return back to Queensland when he's able to.

Judging from the minority of the 33% who loved to express their thoughts on online forums, I still think it would be suicidal for the MPs to stay in their constituency.

Imagine Lim Ah Hong knocking on your door in the wee hours of the morning telling you his water bills are too expensive.

Actually 1 reason I can think of why MPs don't stay in the constituency could boil down to conflict of interest.

Last time I was staying in this condo, and happens that the committee chairman would often get the technicians, cleaners to ensure that the area around his home is always spruced up. Even light bulbs for his rooms and toilets, he also ask technician to get from MCST. Imagine if you are technician, would you dare say no?

There's where a system should be set up to ensure there's little abuse of the system, so that politicians cannot abuse the system to ensure he gets undue privileges.

I mean, for example, say that if the pipes in Obama's Hyde Park home burst, they cannot use the city's water department to fix the pipe, even though Obama was an US Senator at that time. They may have had to use their own money to hire people to fix those pipes.
