I think that also has to do with the smaller size of apartment built these days.
Minimalistic lifestyle is good when one grows older. Smaller space, easier cleaning up, no need maids, buy lesser rubbish due to limited storage, a Kindle can replace a thousand books, etc etc. It's a good way to live. Lesser connection with luxury, more connection with personal time and loved ones and the best is when one travels, much less shopping and more appreciation of culture and environment.
