Bro, got news for you. I heard that PRC picking up cardboard as part time from their regular work. Also heard that they going around HDB flats asking for throw away items like Garang Guni. No sure how true. Competition for our old folks.

anything that has $ at the end of the deal, PRC will do including garang guni trade which is most familiar on weekends. I always ignore these group as they pay peanut and cheat u on weighting scale.

Some of the best places to live in the world have the highest tax as well. Think how much the Scandinavian countries and its associated lifestyle.

Unfortunately, I fell in this bracket when I was working there. No complaints, I will get it back in pension, even though I am residing in this silly Island.

Yes its true Bro Scroobal... Last July while moving out of my parents' home in Tampines, I was busy discarding few unwanted items...Got an old spoilt TV and an old microwave that I wanted to throw away... Then I heard the the familiar horn and shout of the Karang guni man... I went downstairs and told the man in his 70s that I got few old stuff to give away... Then out of a sudden, appeared 2 PRC men at my lift lobby and he told me in Mandarin to just give my stuff to them instead of the karang guni man.. Told him a straight NO... The 2 PRC men were quite pesky but I told them firmly that I had promised to give the old stuff to that old man... Me and the karang guni man then proceeded to my parents's unit and I then gave that old TV set and the microwave to him.. The Karang Guni uncle wanted to give me $6 for the old items but I refused to take it and told him its ok not to pay me... The old man then told me that making a living as a Karang guni man is tough now with many PRCs also vying the market with them...

I had a old TV with tube still working but the cover attached to set was missing, all the karang guni do not want even when I give away for free; I just needed someone to get rid of the heavy stuff. In the end town council came. If you compare Aust and Sg, Aust is really into re-using such old stuff but in Sg , we just dump all these good working stuff in wasteland.
If the price of storage is not so damn high , I would open a warehouse selling these like in aussieland.

Tks Scro for sharing.

I have to believe that the give and take culture is not overnight. What makes a society accepting of failures and ready to give a helping hand? Altho this must sound tiring to those who are pro-estab, I have to say what the govt does and say can rub off on its citizens. If a country's leaders talk more of milk of human kindness, stretching out a helping hand and looking out for the unfortunate and fallen, instaed of competitiveness, strife, money, profits, growth at all costs and material success, surely that country has a higher chance of producing and perpetuating a culture that makes men look after one another.

Agree 110%. You've hit it right on the nail. Many of us can see that. Why doesn't the government?

So what you mean is that the man should be peddling porn as a side line to assure him of a better success?

I could hardly condone the peddling of porn as a way of earning a living but it would be a smarter thing to do than buying ostrich eggs at $10,000 a pop with the expectation of making a 1000% return.

Did you contribute enough to deserve it ?

Every year I received from the tax department how much is my entitlement, because it fluatuates. I must have contribute enough to deserve it or is there a minimun ceiling to begin with, I don't know.

That is what I like about you, Sam.

Faced with the hard truth but you can still do a dance to wriggle out of it.

Maybe that is why you get a better chanced at success.LOL

Yes, he did. I suspect that he it is this reason that both his wife and he are shy to make contact with others despite all the years and now doing well. He told me that ostriches easily contract Newcastle disease and therefore they products are banned from many countries and immediately they were facing an uphill task. Frankly I think the whole thing did not make sense and I am speaking from hindsight. I recall a famous newsreader and her husband also did the same thing and she went back to being a broadcast journalist in Australia. Whatever it is it the ostrich eggs that have given his kids a headstart in life in a first world country.
If he fell for that "Make Millions from ostrich eggs" scam, he must have had his head buried in the sand.

Absolutely. I remember you mentioning this story in the past. I cannot understand why this country with such huge reserves can't do the same. It's a bloody disgrace.I remember during one ICT, one of my sergeants seemed unusually quiet. I enquired and he told me that his new born son had issues and he was facing $100k bill medical bill. He was proud and did not accept any offer of help. I was more shocked by the size of the bill. He did not want to share what the problem so I left it there.
A country should be looking after it's citizens. While I was a guest in Canada, I got a taste of what it was to be treated like a citizen of a 1st world country. When I had a serious traffic accident in Canada. Social services was automatically notified & a case worker assigned to me to see if she could assist me. They then informed the university of my predicament, as I was a student there. I'm sure more assistance would have been offered if only I was a citizen. The social worker did apologise for not being able to do more since I wasn't a citizen:eek:I was impressed by their health care system.I was quickly admitted into hospital for treatment. Issues such as health insurance coverage was settled after I was admitted. It's so different in Spore where payment is the 1st & last thing you have to settle before being admitted & when you are discharged:rolleyes: In Spore it's all about $$$:(

I thought it was a great motivational story to tell. Its a country that offers people a second chance. In Singapore, you will be considered a failure and you have to lose your dignity first before getting any help.
