'Gary Ng' gets 50 months jail and $20k fine

THE man dubbed Singapore's Edison Chen was sentenced to 50 months' jail and fined $20,000 on Wednesday for a series of offences.

Chen Guilin alias Gary Ng, 28, had admitted to having 507 obscene films, mostly of himself having sex with other women. Some of the women were willing parties for the filming while others were not. He had hidden a video camera in a plastic bag with a slit to film his acts and uploaded some on the Internet.

The former property agent had also pleaded guilty to four charges of forgery and one count each of housebreaking and theft, criminal breach of trust and unlawfully having another person's identity card. He committed a total of 21 offences from 2006 to June last year involving property worth $171,770.

The prosecution had earlier urged the court to impose a heavy fine and at least four years' jail in view of the severe aggravating factors.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Paul Wong said Chen was a recalcitrant offender, and that all the offences were dishonest involving pre-planning and scheming.

Chen's lawyer Savliwala Din had told the court in mitigation that his client made no excuse for his wrongdoing. He turned to crime when he could not earn enough money from his commissions as a real estate agent, he added.

This is an example of doublespeak and forktongueness of lawyers. First say client makes no excuse then give excuse that he no money so turn to crime. Somemore excuse is crap.

Chen pleaded guilty to possessing obscene films, filming him having sex with other women, four charges of forgery and one count each of housebreaking and theft, criminal breach of trust and unlawfully having another person's identity card.

"Fellow guys, please learn from this example if the thought of ever trying to film obscene videos or even a 'love video' of you and your partner as a 'keepsake'.

"It may sound innocent to some of you, but it's still an offence, and you won't get away with it.

"Always respect your lady; it should only be FYEO (for your eyes only). Don't risk her privacy as the video could be leaked or stolen.

"Girls, do your part too. Be wary when you meet new guys, especially at clubs or pubs.

"Don't drink until you are too tipsy, and make sure you don't allow anyone to drug your drink.

"I may sound old-fashioned, but do be wary when being intimate with guys you hardly know. They may turn out to be someone like 'Gary Ng'.

"Don't get your boyfriend in trouble by allowing him to film your sex acts. You may think it's private, but the viral nature of the internet and ease of access to electronic devices is really scary.

"If you suspect anyone of filming you secretly, do make a police report. Always be fully aware of your surroundings!"
