I know a few friends who have adult children who are basically doing the same thing with various permutations. In this case I use as an example, the child went to Poly. Then decided to study Engineering in a local Uni which is a 3 year course if you have already gone through Poly. During last year at Poly, when looking at the Uni options, the SAF comes and recruits the kid. First they offer the kid a scholarship for Engineering studies at the Uni. Then they give the kid this cockamimy test and tell the kid that he/her is Officer material. After the kid graduates from Uni with Engineering degree, the kid is bonded for 4 years in the SAF. In the SAF, the vocation given to the kid is of course nothing related to Engineering. In fact, its as far removed from Engineering as you can get. By the time the 4 years are over, the kid's engineering knowledge is now out of date and not been practiced. The market value for the kid's engineering degree is therefore limited as the kid has not practiced Engineering whatsoever. The kid knows this. The safety of the SAF is very seductive compared to the outdated and no experienced Engineering practice possess by the kid. So what happens now. What can the kid do? Get a Master Degree in Engineering, by going back to school. Sort of a self Upgrading, you might say. The SAF knows this and steps in and offers a scholarship again for the Master degree. Of course, a bond will be required. By the time the Master degree is earned and the bond is finished, the kid is in their 30s. And with no experience. So, the kid will end up being a lifer in the SAF.

The country needs more Engineers, not more SAF personnel. A blind person can see that. But what will happen here? The kid will continue to vote for the PAP because the fear is that is an oppo wins, they will trim down the $15 billion SAF budget spend on expensive useless toys and trim back the thousands of useless jiakliaobee and deadwood. The kids knows that it might be him that gets trimmed. So, therefore continue to vote PAP. Now repeat this scenario for thousands of boys and girls in the SPF, Civil Service, etc. The SPF for example has over 41000 personnel. The entire NYPD, in one of the most dangerous cities in the US and looking after a larger population has 50,000 personnel. You can see how the PAP use our money to retain power. And we haven't even talked about the PA yet. Gongcheebyes are too blind to see this.

You are right about skills lost in SAF service. I've once worked with a just-ex SAF regular, which is equivalent to an Military Expert today.
He couldn't even figure out how a certain type of simple equipment was supposed to be put together! I complained and got him removed as I felt he was a risk to the place.

Degree holders PROVE their DISCIPLINE in life especially in their FORMATIVE years, & NOT MANY are able to get a degree as DISTRACTIONS of life are many. Some are not academically inclined, would do better in sports or arts & had proven to be SUCCESSFUL in their inclinations.

Ultimately, the purpose of SAF is to SAFEGUARD our nation, & would need not just academic degrees but hands on practical aspects in Human Management thru CRITICAL THINKING that the DISCIPLINE of a Degree can provide, & thus commissioned or non-commissioned Officers have to pass grueling tests not just in courses but even during the 2 yrs military stint, to be assured of a CAREER in the military, or to be let go into public service when their contract ends.

Such appreciated Talents, from diverse backgrounds & educational level are necessary to elevate our Armed Forces to greater heights. EACH degree holder from diverse subjects studied DO bring BETTER understanding & mission success to the table.

The insignificant nobody me had the privilege & honor to be acquainted with the Commanding Officer of our elite forces - Commandos. He had only an Architectural degree, not even Engineering & most certainly FAR from what he had painstakingly studied & sacrificed his youth for. However, he had to go thru the grueling Officers' course & passed out as a recognized leader among his cohort & SAF, & eventually thru hardwork EARNED his position in the elite forces.

Being intelligent, hardworking & especially a Humble Human, he would LISTEN to others, from various educational backgrounds & even the cook sergeant, to make his decisions on leading his Unit. It is only what he had been taught - CONSENSUS, which is what our govt practices as NO mortal is perfect or all knowing.

And thru his guidance, support, encouragement, attention to details, suffering not from fools, & leadership, eventually in 1991, the legendary Operation Thunderbolt was a success & led to the rescue of 114 passengers & 11 crew members, a feat that NO other anti-terrorism team in the World could achieve back then - the Egypt Govt fiasco in mind back then. There had been many more successful missions that can never be revealed...

The point of my post is - WE Singapore need local & courageous talents from all walks of life, not just mere talents, for progress & evolution. When no locals are willing to take up such honor, then we will have to depend on others - the cheaper the better, to bring down costs which will affect the economy by inflation, as well as to appeal to many other locals & their forefathers whom had sacrificed so much, so much, to elevate Singapore to what it is today, a debt of honor that should be repaid if one is morally inclined but NEVER forced upon.....

People had enough to eat and everyone who wanted a job could get one, and not worry about PAP let in FT stealing it. And by the way, no one needed to build up our armed forces. Why? The British guaranteed our security by leaving a contingent of troops behind to protect us. As well, we had a defence treaty called ANZUK, which still exist today. This treaty allowed for Australian and New Zealand troops to be stationed in Singapore. Not for years, for decades. And its hundreds of millions $ wasted on these scholarships who don't even contribute anything to the singaproe economy.
