The real reason why there was a war was because Qing Dynasty was too greedy and ban England from trade if they don't agree to the Qing's unreasonable demands. It was this trade ban that cause the war and not opium. Also, there was a vote to decide if England want to start a war with Qing dynasty over the trade ban and out of 600 votes, the war fraction won by 9 votes. So nearly half do not want to go to war against the Qing as they saw it as expensive and wasteful. All these arguments and debates were recorded in the England parliament historical records. It can be traced unlike CCP always change history.

It's not about the opium as at that time, Opium was considered a medicine in both China and in England. England royals even feed their babies small amount of opium as medicine and China's royals use opium as a health drug. In fact opium was brought in by Cheng Ho during the Ming dynasty. In fact, pure opium was reserved for England royal use and only poor quality get to sold in Qing China during those time.

England ban opium only 60 years (1907) after the so called "opium" wars as new pain killer drugs was invented. The "opium" war was a propaganda piece by CCP.

For those who do not understand Cantonese, I will upload the mandarin translated version when it is made available.

edit:
1907 England ban opium.
1909 China ban opium
1921 world ban opium.

The so-called opium war was in 1840-1842. You do the math.

Didn't watch the video, but you got most of the facts.

The truth though is actually slightly different and more interesting. I don't know if you know much about trade balances, but will assume you do.

At the time, England was buying tons of stuff from China. The only payment China was willing to accept was silver. They did not want any English crap. But the English and the rest of the West wanted Chinese crap. Except at that time, Chinese crap really wasn't crap, but world-leading stuff. Stuff like ceramics. Which is why in colloquial English, ceramics is known as fine china. So the West was literally bleeding silver to China and unhappy about it. They were literally hooked on Chinese goods. This extended to all the Western European powers.

Finally, some bright spark (I don't remember who, but it shouldn't be too difficult to look up) hit upon the idea of selling the Chinese opium to stem the silver deficit. They grew it in the colonies that were suitable and filled ships with it to be sent to China and asked for payment in, you guessed it silver! And this time, the Chinese were hooked on Western opium.

The Qing started seeing the state of affairs and a populace that was loving this and bleeding silver back to the West and decided to put a stop to it. Hence a ban on trade. At this point, the angmohs resort to their favourite tactic. Fight. To ensure that they could keep getting silver out of China. What the Spanish did to the Americas, England did to China. As a further extension of this theme, the Dutch economy before Indonesia was a poor backwater. Literally by bleeding Indonesia of it's wealth did the Netherlands become a 1st world country. I don't remember the exact numbers but some stupid % of Dutch GDP back in the 1800s was attributed to sucking Indonesia dry.

hmmm... perhaps @tanwahtiu has a point. right?

Don't forget the silly Manchu cunt declaring war on all the ang moh countries plus Japan.

Chinese are materialistic people and buy anything that's is latest and make money...

But the shit BE industrial products doesn't work... no spare parts available, must wait long long for the shipment to arrive. Machine down time means workers no work and boss lose money...

Chinamen lose money and business and get fed up sure fuck the Angmoh dickheads selling shit machinaries that don't work to China.

look at US and Western machine products today still fucked up never work and breakdown often.

then they lied that the Emperor don't want BE machines.... to recoup losses the BE turn to criminal trades and start drug trafficking opium to China...

Furthermore, industrial products needed funding to research, create new materials to make....

no money? The BE turns into criminal trade drug trafficking opium to China and ripped off China for 100 years...

Princeton uni, Columbia uni, Harvard Uni, Bell transatlantic cabling from London to NYC were from drug trafficking opium in China to raise money for the projects and built unis...

You should watch the video if you understand Cantonese. What you mentioned was the "official" explanation about the silver mode of payment.

The event that lead to the war was a statement by the Qing officials saying they will ban trade with England if they don't sign the deal.
The event that lead to the deal and what was in the deal was explained in the video.

In short, the Qing official who started all this wrote a letter to one of his students after the war lamented that why Chinese don't smoke China produced grass and smoke western opium. He lamented that China's grass are more high quality and why not China grow own opium and make branded goods like the west. So opium was not viewed as something harmful and negative at that time. It was this Qing official jealousy.

This Qing official raided a warehouse (without warrant nor reason as during those time Qing officials were king), confiscated the opium found there and declared that those were smuggled goods and threw them into the sea.

England protest that the raid was illegal and Qing offer to pay them with tea leaves for compensation and priced the tea leaves at very high rate. Then Qing officials took this opportunity to gather all merchants to discuss a new deal about this so called smuggling problem and wanted to force all western trade merchant to sign a deal. The deal was that if Qing found anyone deemed smuggle opium goods, all the rest of the goods will be confiscated.

The rest of the western country officials signed the deal except England as they view this was unfair and unreasonable. What deemed as smuggled and why confiscate all other unrelated goods. Then the Qing officials said that if England don't sign the deal, Qing will ban England from trading. This is why the war was started.
