The term "ownership" is one of the biggest illusions in life because life too is a temporary phenomenon.

I have transferred much of my assets to a trust so on paper I don't own these assets anymore.

However the trust is structured so that I enjoy the yield so in my mind it is as good as ownership in all ways but name.

Just consider CPF to be a similar structure.

The primary benefit of ownership is control. When you set up a trust, you chose to delegate that control. More importantly it behaves predictably within the bounds of the parameters set. Not so for the CPF. It has deviated far from expectations of a pension fund and there is no transparency about what goes on behind the scenes. And yet these administrative elites have the audacity to ask for generous above market remuneration. Loong is playing a dangerous game here. I can feel it in my calcium enriched bones.

I lived there for two years. The problem is not the absence of welfare it is the misuse of welfare payouts by the recipients.

Misuse? Far from it ...for every abuser of the system, I can find you at least two who are working two to three jobs to try to survive.

The government sets the direction and defines the rules. All societies have boundaries so there is no reason why Singapore should be any different.

However within these boundaries there is huge latitude. While there may tighter constraints in certain aspects of ones life compared to the West, I venture to say that societies in the West are breaking down for that very reason. There are no guiding principles and no moral boundaries anymore..

Western societies are failing because the rich are screwing the majority, with the support of the government. Tax cuts do NOT create jobs. Yet the rich and business are getting tax cuts after tax cuts. Meanwhile, the wages of the people are barely keeping up with inflation or stagnated.

The really rich can always move their wealth elsewhere and use tricks to reduce their taxes. Salaried employees, even if they are upper middle class, do not have much leeway to play tax tricks- if your salary is $100,000, your employer will report it as such to the IRD. And besides, did the rich force the trailer park trash to be irresponsible? Did the rich force the trash to inhale poison aka smoke to reduce "stress"? What "stress" can manual labourers suffer to induce them to inhale poison? Did the rich force the poor to have too many children, eat too much till they look like mini godzillas, spend their savings on iPhones to watch Korean movies and then don't have enough to retire? Did the rich force the trailer park trash to not go to universities and get proper professional degrees?

Taxes should be for basic services like defense, policing (to prevent trailer park trash robbing the rich and upper middle class or simply trailer park trash robbing from other trailer park trash) and infrastructure. Transfer payments (subsidised sick care, universal this and that, etc) should be eliminated. If bleed heart liberals like yourself wish to make such transfer payments, you can do it voluntarily out of your own pockets and not use your vote to allow the government to steal from other people's pockets to fund your pet causes. I will rather fund charities dedicated to helping the truly poor and destitute in Somalia than to waste a single cent on useless trailer park trash in developed countries and I am entitled to exercise that choice because it is my hard earned money. Hell, I am entitled to throw it into the sea if it will give me more satisfaction than wasting it on ungrateful bastards like those trailer park trash.

Forced transfer payments in the name of social harmony is EXTORTION period. As Milton Friedman said government's role should be limited to: external defence, internal policing, setting rules of the game and settling disputes when it is alleged that those rules have been broken. There will be no chaos. Everyone for himself is limited by the rules of the game eg. food produced must be fit for human consumption and government inspections and audits will be in place to ensure that - paid for with taxpayers' money. However, if you get lung cancer because you choose to inhale poison, then that's your own problem, hospitals private or public will be prohibited from providing you with medical treatment. Even private doctors are trained with public money and public resources should not be wasted on useless idiot smokers who are better off dead.

Conservatives and bleeding heart liberals have different opinions on what is a "better" society. Liberals are free to use their own money to help create their version of a "better" society, but they are not allowed to use my money for a vision which I don't share.

I am in the middle class and I don't need to get ahead. Neither am I so thick skinned as to demand that others help me just because they are rich. I believe in self reliance and I expect others to be self reliant too. Now, it is the poor who are wanting universal this and that and demanding that I cough up a larger share of my income to pay for things which these fucking poor people should be paying out of their own pockets. The rich, on the other hand, do not make any demands for a share of my hard earned money to fund anything for them. So why should I divert my anger from the poor to the rich?

The low socio-economic class also have disgusting habits that make it necessary for me to avoid them. Therefore, I am already paying more for the services I need because of the need to avoid these disgusting people ahem animals - eat in food court and not hawker centre or kopitiam, see private doctor and not polyclinic, fly Cathay Pacific and not Scott, stay at Mount E and not SGH if need to be hospitalised, etc. Just by being their disgusting selves and showing no desire nor aptitude to improve, they are already imposing a cost ahem tax on me - the care, planning and extra $ spent in order to avoid unwanted proximity to these SCUMS. Therefore, they deserve from me.

Singapore was never socialist. It rose from the ashes of a failed union with Malaysia because of a huge influx of private enterprise from abroad which was not only given absolute leeway with regards to how they ran their businesses but were actively enabled so that it could operate without any hinderances whatsoever eg the suppression of union activity, huge tax breaks and generous grants.

Socialism is when the government takes over from private enterprise eg what happened in Venezuela where the foreign oil companies were all chased out or heavily regulated.
