It was even aired in Singapore on Channel 8 (but with Chinese subtitles or dubbed into Mandarin) during the 1990s:

Thanks for your posts; I was not aware of:
wikipedia.org/wiki/Telematch
until today, but it seems that the British beat the Germans to it by about one year in 1966 (when the British also won the football World Cup!):
wikipedia.org/wiki/It's a Knockout
But both the German and British versions were actually based on the French show:
fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intervilles
which was first broadcast in 1962.

Having said that, I'm afraid I'm still biased towards the Japanese. :o
