To access Mars, a weight ratio exceeding 550 between launch vehicle (+energy) to payload s consumed, and most of it turns to toxic harmful exhaust to pollute our planet.

E.g. Curiosity Mars Rover, 0.9 tons. Rocket Launching Atlas V (350 tons+ fuel 210tons) 560 tons. Generated hundreds of tons of pollutions including space junks.

NASA will need to at least 100X more of such huge squandering of Earth resources, to just establish a tiny foothold there.

this news is "coincidentally" timed just before congress is about to debate and approve the federal budget. it happens every year, and nasa seems to be experts in secrecy and the timing and marketing of their discoveries. the earlier publicity was both a warm-up to get attention and a red herring.

This sure is hopeful news. Some years back, its was discovered that frozen water is present on the Red Planet. Now, liquid water can be found there too. There is a chance then that some kind of microbial stuff may live there. No proof yet, but I am looking forward to fresh news about this. News on Earth really sucks compared to what is reported from outer space.

I went ice fishing once, and am not attracted to it. Sitting idly in one spot at -20C isn't exactly an ideal way to spend one's leisure time. I think Mars is way way colder than that, even during Martian summers! And besides, handling fishing gear, hooks, and line with those thick gloves on can be a challenge.

You can also see that it is a ONE WAY ONLY trip.

Because to launch a return to Earth from Mars with crew and life supports, launch weight could be 50 tons including fuel and stages of rockets and boosters. All these had to be in the 1st place sent from earth. To send all that to Mars, it calls for 40-60 delivery trips to Mars, and also call for a huge rocket assembly job and erection of of launching tower on Mars. Man do not have such ability yet.

So far Apollo 17 only managed to spend the longest duration of 3 days on moon. Gave up after Apollo 17. Now can they afford to Mars?
