Given their respective expertise, can they make it in the political arena? Their views are often sought after. Imo, they cannot be less prolific than what we have today.

Surely, they are miles ahead of Swee Say, Hng Kiang, Kim Yong, Chun Sing. Chuan-Jin etc.

Your views please. Children need not contribute here.

The last few academics fielded by the PAP were not too promising. But i say it depends.

In Singapore, it all depends on what kind of academics they are. Are they academics who adhere to the 'right kind of politics'? ;)

Referring to those who speak their mind. Need not be politically correct type.

i find that in s'pore to be a successful politician, it's best you study economics, preferably from thos ivy league universities. economy for s'pore is very important, so there is need for it. more useful than doctors and lawyers.

From your question, I would assume that the Academics you're referring to are the Scholars of Singapore.

Based on my assumption, if these Scholars were presidential scholars, or LKY scholars, etc... more or less their careers in PAP are defined.

So, on the other hand, if what you meant was just people who studies to Doctorates with the Phd and all, and these Academics want to enter politics.

From the case of Scholars deployed by Singapore Governments, they have a career paths being groomed for their succession.

From the case of tom dick and harry, you and me, go to study Doctorates, and become a Doctor Somebody, and want to enter politics, I think it would truly depend on that person's qualities. If he/she have a passion for serving the people, and is generally well liked by the people, sure why not.

But if if the Doctor Somebody do not have that sort of passion for serving the people, and is generally NOT well liked by the people, why not focus on researching something in the research centers, and get a bigger ROI on the Doctorate?

Seriously, I think to be a good politician, a Normal Degree from a local university would suffice, at least have some form of credibility that this person is educated. Masters or Doctorates are not really required. Next, the person should be a people person, able to interact, and help the people, listen to the people... and is able to help most of the people, most of the time.

So, my thought and view is that Academics may be Good Politicians provided they have the heart, passion, to serve the people, and HEART, PASSION, TO SERVE THE PEOPLE even without a Doctorate, even without a Masters, even without a Degree would be enough.

Friend, you got some good point there.

All I can say 患乱出英雄 in trouble times a hero will surface.

LKY came at the time when Malaysia want independence from the drug lord British Empire. Singapore Chinese were poor NOT by choice but drugged by the Pommies, the drug pushers, with opium into oblivion. LKY came into politic at that time to demand independence from the drug lord British bastards.

Which is to tell the drug lord "Go get fuck back to England. We have had enough of you drug pusher bastard in Asia. We want to clean up this Singapore that you have shit us with opium dens and make my Chinese people smoke opiums. knn, knnbaccb go fuck off from Singapore white trash!

LKY was then 患乱出英雄

In todays situation, LKY would fix the voters too, that is rigged the election to win if he have too.

This 2015 election is first time after death of LKY. And by 2030 thechart will show up and down of the past GE after LKY the votes 69% went up for some reasons either it was rigged or true result presentations of voters vote.

Nothing to do with education. But forced situation and environment demand change.

Nah .. academics live in their airy-fairy world, at least most of them. This is especially the liberal ones in the arts and social sciences. It is a fine thing to have theories and well-written thesis. In the real world, once you apply any theory and it has implications for all aspects of policy applications. Take for eg, minimum wage. It is so easy to say it is fair for the average worker, but it has impact on investors' perceptions, companies' cost viability, chance of success, clamour for further wage rise and foreign workers' perceptions etc.

I am not sure why academics in general make bad politicians and it is perhaps they always talk and never have their talk really tested in the real world. If you do, you get tested and see the implications and adjust accordingly. They live in the closed closet world of ideas and ideas could well mean well-intended fantasies.

In Singapore, few academics make it to be in government top posts.
