A coalition govt is not by choice. When you don't have a majority you have little choice. If you think that scenario might rise, you might prepare the party for it by having an understanding or sponsoring the creation of a "friendly" party.
I bet those minor parties already exist, i.e. WP and NSP, which are not true opposition parties (just like Chiam See Tong's SPP), simply because they have no ability, let alone desire, to overthrow the ruling PAP government. The mix would be the PAP strength in technocracy and control with a partner party that is closer to social issues and people focused led by known and accepted identities. The minor will emulate WP to cut its base.
I am aware that we will all wonder how it works but typically they will given certain privileges as well concessions in term of minor policies.
It will interesting as the minor party will have to emerge sometime soon. I bet it will have ex PAP members to some extent but will be led by someone charismatic who has no prior links to the PAP. I also will speculate that his articulation skills will be superb yet will display humility.
In fact, I think that's why the PAP government allows WP and NSP to exist, so as to save the PAP the trouble of "sponsoring the creation of a "friendly" party"; and that's if those 2 "opposition"/"co-driver" (haha!) parties were not secretly sponsored or created by the PAP in the first place years ago.
Yes, it is a downtrend that's probably bottoming out, which is unfortunate for anti-PAP Singaporeans. He mentioned that after the drubbing in GE, 2 BEs and 1 PE. In the PE, it was a debacle. If that is not a trend I do not know what is.
I will explain below.
If voters wise up, I think PAP cannot even be the government come next election.
Are you all not aware that the PAP, via LKY and LHL, have been controlled by the same Zionist Jews (possibly based in Germany) who control the combined military and financial power of the UK, US and Israel? If the WP takes over government, we will get the chance to see the skeletons in the closet and bring the PAP elites to justice.
Singapore is basically the Southeast Asian version of:
1. Israel (non-Muslim, or even anti-Muslim, country surrounded by Muslim countries in the Middle East, just as Singapore is surrounded by Muslim Malaysia and Indonesia),
2. Switzerland (offshore financial centre for Europe and certain other countries, just as Singapore is THE offshore financial centre for Southeast Asia and even for some Northeast Asians) and
3. Monaco (its Monte Carlo Casino is the gambling centre of Europe, just as Singapore's 2 casinos are the gambling centres of Southeast Asia, surpassing even Las Vegas and second only to Macau's casinos in terms of annual revenue)
COMBINED.
Monaco and Singapore also have their own prestigious Formula One motor races, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix.
So the powers that be would certainly try their utmost best to prevent all our middle-class fantasies of a better life in Singapore from becoming reality.
I agree.Unlikely. Singaporeans are by nature cautious. Many will prefer the status quo if they are see uncertainty. They are also not clear about the concept of democracy, the role of the press and conduct of PA etc.
Also, I think the "system" (i.e. Women's Charter and all the other benefits that women get) in Singapore is already designed/rigged in such a way that I dare say that nearly all WOMEN usually vote for the PAP, so that's at least nearly half the popular vote at every election. After that, the PAP easily manages to get the simple majority from the old men (those at least 60 or 65) because usually, old men are simply too old and weak, both physically and mentally, and therefore more dependent on the government than when they were younger; and also more votes from certain younger men, usually those from the upper classes and upper-middle class.
Until the last election in 2011, the opposition was so weak that they were unable to contest every GRC/SMC, resulting in so many walkovers all over Singapore:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singaporean_general_election,_2006#Nomination_day_results
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Singapore_GE_2006,_contested_seats.png
And even in 2011, when they managed to contest every GRC/SMC except LKY's Tanjong Pagar, this is what happened:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singaporean_general_election,_2011#Results_summary
Total voting electorate was 2,350,873, but because of the walkover in Tanjong Pagar (139,771 votes), the maximum voter turnout on polling day was 2,211,102; and yet 150,729 did not vote and 44,737 votes were "spoilt", leaving 2,015,636 valid votes, with 1,212,154 (the famous 60.14% of valid votes) going to the PAP.
I believe about half (roughly one million) of the valid votes were by women voting for the PAP, and the remaining 200,000+ consisted of old men above 60 or 65 years of age and young and middle-aged men from upper-middle and upper class households.
So no matter how hard anti-PAP Singaporeans try, they will still lose. In fact, I doubt many of them bother to vote for WP or NSP because they honestly like such parties; I believe most of them vote for the opposition parties simply because they don't want to vote for the PAP and want the PAP to have as low a percentage of the valid votes as possible, which is why they still bother to vote, unlike the 150,729 who did not bother to vote; otherwise, besides winning nearly all the seats, the PAP would also end up with a higher percentage of the so-called popular vote, possibly even significantly higher (say, above 70%), causing all these anti-PAP Singaporeans to lose face! haha
And even then, I think both WP and NSP are puppets/shills (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shill) of the PAP, so that even if PAP gets less than 50% of the seats, PAP can still easily form a coalition government (like the current British government: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameron_ministry) with WP or NSP or even both, and the PM will still be a PAP member since WP and NSP are obviously too weak because of lack of experience.
These anti-PAP Singaporeans are really stupid, and that's why they deserve to lose, because they are just BLINDLY voting for any "opposition" party that's available in their GRC/SMC.
In my opinion, people who are members of the powerless minority (and there can be several different disunited minority groups within the same country), and who consistently refuse to join the majority because of whatever reasons, should just resign themselves to their fate and prepare to suffer if necessary, to the point of sacrificing their lives and dying as heroes if they truly believe in their minority cause. But they should resist only in a non-violent way; and they certainly should not bother to vote in any election.
