Tithes are monthly donations to the church, usually 10% of your monthly salary. They either get the money in a sealed envelope with your name on it, or auto-deduct from your bank account.

Offerings are anonymous. Offerings are when you seated during a service (or standing up to sing) and an offering bag (or plate) is passed around the congregation, and you take out money from your wallet and put directly inside the offering bag.

There are also numerous other funds for donating money e.g. mission funds, building funds.

What an investment eh? Give all your money for social acceptance among like-minded believers and the promise of a blissful afterlife.

Yes they are suppose to get an auditor to submit a yearly report to Com of Charity & display the balance sheet for the parishioners to see..

Yes, some churches are very anal about this. people who dont tithe are being marginalised. They set unwritten rules saying if u dont tithe u cannot be part of their team serving people. U are regard lesser christian creature who they deemed u unspiritual. No matter how much time u gave to church how good u are, if u dont tithe u cannot be a leader in the church. Another thing is they will never stop building bigger and better church to horde members, so every 5 to 10 yrs sure got building fund.

One more thing, they will pay pastors well who sit in aircon environment but never pay missionaries well who spent all their lives out in poor countries. These are the hypocrites and churches u must avoid.

The church needs to report to Com of Charity only if it asks for Institutions of Public Character (IPC) which allows donor to claim for tax relief. This is what got CHC into trouble.

Every year you picked up a pack of 12 envelopes for each month of the year. You put whatever amount you want into the envelope and place the envelope into the offering bowl each month. If you choose not to write your name on the envelope, then your tithe is 100% anonymous.

lianbeng replies: they have special envelopes for specific purpose eg tithe, thanksgiving, Christmas blessing, mission, etc... so they do keep track but how many people actually used those envelopes is another question lah! some find it troublesome to fill in those blanks such as name n home address.

The very fact that those envelopes have a blank space for you to fill your name (among other details) indicate that you are encouraged to not be anonymous.

Even the act of picking up 12 envelopes is despicable... CPF has already whittled down your monthly disposable income, and now you are expected to give more money each month.

You aren't robbing God but robbing the pockets of the middlemen selling a church business, but they sure frequently use that Malachi verse to shame you into giving your money to them.

I agree it is not. The 10% in the old testament refer to sharing 10% of your harvest with your neighbours cos they were mostly farmers. The catholic church for example does not practice tithing yet the church is thriving.

Malachi 3:10 is one of the most 'popular' verses (if not the most 'popular' verse) used by church leaders as a basis to teach about tithing. One has to read the whole book in totality. This book is written to rebuke priests who were greedy, collecting tithes but refusing to share with the poor. In this book you read at least two times God rebuked the priests by these words: Oh, you priests! And not even one such rebuke was addressed to the temple goers.

Furthermore, the book is written many hundred years before the birth of Christ when tithing then was an Old Testament practice. There is no a single verse in the New Testament that teaches the NT Christians to give tithes. None of the 12 apostles practised giving tithes and none ever did tell Christians to tithe. Yes....there are many verses in the NT to tell people to give and share with the poor e.g. those who have lost their husbands, children who have lost their fathers or mothers. But this is not tithing. Tithes is NOT a New Testament teaching.

If you are interested to know about this especially to further understand whether tithings is a biblical teaching in the NT, you can go to google for this book which can be loaded free of charge:

Should Church Teach Tithing by Dr. Kelly (which is a church pastor). His conclusion: NO - tithing should not be taught in churches! Interestingly, the book noted that God collected tithes only from the Jews and not even one pagan (i.e. not Jews) had given tithes which were in the form of food, livestock (and never money though money was used years before tithing was practiced). Another point noted in the book is that tithing of food and livestock were limited to only in those produce within the Holy Land and was given only once (and not every month when you have your salary as what pastors and church leaders telling you today).

Ask a Jew do u tithe. They will tell u it is "illegal" to tithe. Ask a Christian why they still tithe when Jews who are the keepers of judaism do not, chances is the christian arguement will collapse.
