PM Lee said S'poreans MUST do their best to help the poor

Why should the poor be given money for nothing while the rest of Singapore has to work hard in order to move ahead?

I didn't start this line. Pinky did. He and his ministars should walk the talk instead of always talking the walk!!

Poor should never be given money just like that. Poverty is a trap, and the more handouts given, the deeper the trap.

I totally hated the idea of Robin Hood economy where the rich and middle class are taxed to subsidise handouts to the poor. Govt should take away money from frivolous expenditures like providing food / lodging and university education to foreigners, wasteful sky-high salaries of Ministers, pointless Presidential office - just to name a few. And then use these money to pull the poor out of the trap.

The poor already receive far too much assistance from the government.

For example, a family consisting of 2 adults and 2 children can receive up to $1350 per month in allowances. In my opinion, that is far too much. It should be slashed to less than $500 max.

The problem is not the poor is poor but the rich is too rich! That's why we have a problem with income inequality.

There is no such thing as "too rich". The sky's the limit when it comes to success. I have no problems with others becoming wildly successful. It's inspirational stuff and helps the rest of us strive towards greater things.

Just look at what Google has done thanks to the fact that it has been fantastically profitable over the years. Google maps, earth, streetview, youtube etc all changing life for the better.

If food and shelter could be provided for those in jail, why not ?

Its disturbing to hear of ppl purposely committing small crimes just to get the permission to get back to jail.

Just look at the amount of money given out to losers and misfits!!! It's disgraceful and very unfair to those who work hard for a living and pay their own way in life.

MORE than $1 billion in grants has been given out by the Government to help low-income households get on the property ladder by buying their first HDB flat.

This has benefited close to 60,000 first-timer households since 2006, the Housing Board said in a statement to The Straits Times.

There are two types of HDB housing grants available to citizens who earn less and whose needs are seen as greater when it comes to securing a permanent roof over their heads.

For instance, the Additional Housing Grant (AHG), introduced in 2006,
gives up to $40,000 if the applicant's household income is less than $1,500 a month.

Not the rest of SG has to help, only the Richie has to help. Why the Richie has to do this is becos they are usually the caused for causing normal people to become poor.

It's the other way round. The rich create wealth for others.

Why should an invalid be denied a wheel-chair or walking frame. Put yourself in that position.

Your reply makes no sense.

Only certain big players can bring such dry food into Singapore and sell it at a price decided by them.

Fishermen in certain parts of Indonesia's far flung Provinces catch "ikan-putih", equivalent to our ikan bilis.

They haul the tiny fish in their small fishing vessels with all their little kids in tow and prepare to dry it.

After the item is dried, along comes "organized businessmen" (protected by the local police and mafia).

These unscrupulous thugs pays them a pittance for that - during one visit it was sold for only 10,000 miserable rupiahs a kilo (Singapore $1.30 cents).

These businessmen brings it to Singapore and we buy it at about $26/- plus per kilo.

Dried prawns (Hay Bee Hiam) costs even more.

You are right, maybe we should eat it with kichap or towgay. Hope the consortiums will not raise the price of green beans (for towgays).

The end result is that these people decide.

Just like the Forest Fires. Who are behind all this in the first place.

Even people in other planets knows what is happening in The Land of Merah-Putih.

If humans are vegans and vegetarians, these sort of thing will not happen at all.

Nobody, myself included, have ever said that invalids should not be taken care of.

However, 99% of the poor are not invalids. They're just lazy, useless, good-for-nothing twits without a work ethic. They don't need help. They need a kick in the arse and some spurs stuck in their hides in order to turn them into productive citizens.

your statement makes me rotfl..

I personally know many well of sinkies who became wealthy thanks to those who were even wealthier.

The rich don't just count their pennies. They spend their wealth in order to create more wealth and this is where the multiplier effect kicks in.

I agree these happens..however, their wealths are mostly gained by the expense of the "poorer" people. Therefore I find that they should return some back .
Just like MLM, the sufferers are the ones at the bottoms..in actual fact considered being conned.
