Koneru Rajendra Prasad, the UAE-based founder-chairman and mentor of the $100 million Trimex Group, is accused, along with Emaar Properties, Dubai, and other linked companies, of causing the Andhra Pradesh government a loss of Rs.4,310 crore. Arrested by the CBI on November 3 in Hyderabad, Prasad is alleged to have spirited away huge sums of money from India to bank accounts abroad, in the process dealing a financial blow to Emaar Hills Township Private Limited (EHTPL)-a joint venture of Emaar Properties, Dubai, a public joint stock company, and the state-owned Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC).

Former cricket coach gets jail for assisting in housebreaking plan

SINGAPORE: A former cricket coach was sentenced to 15 months' jail on Thursday for assisting in a plan to steal from his student's house.

Jeraj Puvaneshen, 26, admitted to helping two fellow coaches with housebreaking in May 2012 and a count of disposing stolen items worth more than S$10,000 in December 2009.

Two other charges of disposing stolen properties worth more than S$5,000 in May 2012 were taken into consideration for sentencing purposes.

At the time of the offences, Puvaneshen was teaching cricket at St Andrew's Secondary and St Andrew's Junior College. His assistant coaches, Rajeswari Pasupathy and Vigineswari Pasupathy, found out that one of the student's parents were away and that the 12-year-old was staying at home alone.

Thus, the two sisters got Puvaneshen to bring the cricket team boys, including the victim, for a run outside the school at about 2pm. The two sisters went on to steal more than S$20,000 worth of gold jewellery and other items from the boy's house, using keys stolen from his bag.

In mitigation, the defence said Puvaneshen makes no excuses for his actions and regrets what he did. It was said that the accused was blindsided by the temptation and although he did distract the victim, he was not the initiator of this plot.

However, the prosecution pointed out that Puvaneshen was a teacher and he abused the trust placed in him.

District Judge Low Wee Ping agreed with the prosecution's call for a deterrent sentence of 15 months' jail. He noted in his judgement that the accused not only disposed off some of the items stolen from the student, but also did the same for another batch of stolen gold jewellery in 2009.

Calling these "outrageous facts", the judge said Puvaneshen then went on to share the proceeds from the disposals.

Puvaneshen is the first of the three accused to be dealt with. The other two are expected in court on July 12.

(19 Feb) – Sreenesh Thaikkodathil Sreedharan, wanted for the murder of a trader, flew to Tiruchy airport from Singapore to escape notice. He even chucked his passport into a toilet dustbin aboard, but city police were ready and waiting

The Air India Express flight from Singapore touched Tiruchirappalli Airport on Friday and Sreenesh Thaikkodathil Sreedharan, wanted in a murder case, thought freedom was a walk out of the airport. He chucked his passport (G2803624) in a toilet bin aboard the aircraft so that there wouldn’t be a whiff of his identity. However, he hadn’t bargained for a wily Bangalore police lying in wait for him and walked right into their trap a la a Hollywood crime thriller.

Wanted for the cold-blooded murder of a cosmetics trader at Hotel Pai Viceroy on J C Road (see box), 30-year-old Sreedharan, a native of Calicut, had fled to Malaysia before settling down in Singapore. However, he soon ran into trouble in Singapore for overstaying on a tourist visa. But, he produced a work permit and sought the court’s permission to stay on. The court asked him to go back to India and return on the work visa.

Bangalore police, meanwhile, wasn’t exactly napping on the job. They had managed to track down his girlfriend, a call centre employee working in Whitefield. They put her under surveillance and learnt about the visa problem. They took his girlfriend into confidence and when he told her that he did not have money to buy an air ticket, police arranged a ticket for him and mailed it through her.

To escape from a lookout circular issued against him, Sreedharan insisted on landing at the lesser known Tiruchirappalli airport in Tamil Nadu, confident that he could give authorities the slip. However, police was not letting him escape this time. Unknown to him, they sent a person to Singapore to fly back with him on the same aircraft without his knowledge. And a team of police officers waited for him at the airport.

Indian shipyard worker, who stabbed a Filipino woman to death in Singapore

30-year-old Roselyn Reyes Pascua, believed to be a prostitute, died from excessive bleeding after being stabbed 10 times in the chest and abdomen, once in the neck and twice in the vagina.

Indian national Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan, admitted to stabbing Pascua, but said that he did it under serious provocation.

On 15 March last year, Pascua, who arrived in Singapore on 9 February 2010 on a social visit pass, was found in a pool of blood in a room at Peony Mansion in Bencoolen Street in the early hours of the morning.

Dr Wee Keng Poh, a forensic pathologist, told the court that Pascua died from a wound to her heart, but noted that two other wounds could also have fatal – a very serious neck wound and another to the abdomen, reported the Straits Times.

Wee, from the Health Sciences Authority, said that Pascua’s 3cm-deep neck wound stopped her from crying out for help before she bled to death. He added that Pascua’s arms and legs had no marks indicating a scuffle, as well as no defensive wounds on her body.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Andre Jumabhoy said that bruises on her face and cuts to her lips indicated that she was punched repeatedly.

Closed-circuit television footage from Peony Mansion’s ground floor lift lobby showed Pascua entering the lift with Gopinathan at 7:10pm on 14 March. He was spotted leaving nine minutes later, heading out the building’s rear exit.

Azlee Thaib, sleeping in the room opposite Pascua’s, discovered the body at about 3am when he heard two Filipino women crying outside Pascua’s room. The 48-year-old driver called the building’s caretaker, who then reported the discovery to the police.

Gopinathan was arrested three days later, carrying Pascua’s mobile phone, some bloodstained money, a Western Union receipt for a money transfer to India and a large amount of cash. The court was not told on the amount of money found on him. The murder weapon was also not found.

Gopinathan will be sentenced to hang if found guilty. At best, his sentence could be reduced to culpable homicide, which will get him a jail term.
