Health issue - sudden muscle cramps

Wonder if anyone else has experienced this, or understands what is going on.

I can get it anytime, usually when I sudden jerk or flex my muscle. I have suffered cramps in my biceps, triceps, calfs, and the side of my torso. The side torso and my calfs are the areas most frequently prone to sudden cramps.

I jog 5-6km everyday, so I initially thought it was due to improper warming up/cooling down. But then I realize it literally can happen anytime ... when i'm asleep (even without AC), during bathing when I suddenly reach for the soap, etc.

The pain is excruciating and lasts for about a minute. It subsides after a few min, but the affected area is very prone to recurring cramps for about an hour after the first one. Thereafter I can use the affected muscle normally again.

Interestingly, I have never cramped up during sex.

for me it's my back muscle. when i spontaneously twist or turn my body to reach out for the ipad on either a bed stand or desk, the back cramps up and there's a sudden surge of pain. before fully making the twist motion, i have to slowly back off to the original position and rest flat, or else pain escalates and cramp worsens. me think it's both dehydration and lack of electrolytes in the body. tony will say i eat too much meat.

Roomate! Looks like we gotta same problem :-(

For me I drink a lot of plain water everyday, so hydration not an issue. My diet is varied (filled with animal protein, whole grain as well as starchy carbohydrates, and citrus fruit), so can't be electrolytes either.

What you describe sounds almost exactly like my experience, except mine is side torso and calfs.

Recurring cramps are indicative and symptomatic of a wide variety of medical conditions, some less serious, some more serious.

Check out some of the possible causes, and experiment with various foods or supplements, to see if you can narrow down the specific cause(s) for your individual case.

Drinking water alone is not good enough. Cramps are usually due to deficiency of salts in yr body. Next time, drink water with some salt in it.

A sign of getting old. I dun think there is any cure. The body is giving up due to aging.
It is happening to 99% of old folks. You're not alone.

Life is like that. Plan for the eventuality. Nothing lasts forever, including your body.

as KR said...you may have salt deficiency......could be potassium specifically. Add some watermelons or bananas to your diet on a regular basis and see

what happens after some time.....whether your condition improves or not , then take it from there.

Your regular jogging causes you to lose salt in the form of potassium.

If you exercise that often and that intensively, take salt tablets or drink a glass of water with salt daily. You can see the difference the next day. I would also suggest that your diet is lacking in salt.

Also one more thing,,,drinking too much water causes one to loose salts and will lead to death. Happen to few ang mors when they went for the kakoda trail just keep drinking water than drop dead. So now if go for kakoda trail,,they are given sports drinks like gatorade etc..

And just adding salt to water is not good enough as there is only sodium and no potassium. Need the complete package but drink isotonic drinks also have to careful as the commercially available ones all have alot of sugar.

Maybe u can try taking magnesium and potassium tablets and see how,,,

Try yoga or go for a professional massage once a blue moon to stretch the veins and loosen the muscle. Stretching veins will prolong life because it smoothen all the block energy in our body that jogging alone is not sufficient to activate those energy.

I used to have painful muscle cramps on my calves while sleeping during the night..

It got so painful that I sometimes had to grit my teeth and tahan the pain.. Then I read in a Forum that the trick is to get out of the bed and jump up and down for a few minutes.. I did that and it really worked to ease the pain on my calves.. I

In the beginning, my wife found my behaviour strange especially when I suddenly hopped out the bed and did some jumping exercise at 1 am.. Had to explain to her before she thinks I'm going crazy..

I got that problem too,,,but i drink salt water straight away,,and it helps. Due to me getting these leg cramps often, I now take magnesium tablets and occasionally drink gatorade or 100+. Also I eat more salty food and my blood pressure still normal. Its good to eat nice salty stuff without fear,,,

According to the kungfu master at Jonker Street in Malacca, this problem is strictly due to the deficiency in potassium.

He advises those who exercise a lot and also those who drinks Heineken atau Chivas a lot, they have to eat food and fruits that are high in potassium.:o

Drinking water may not be enough. Your diet may be lacking in calcium, potassium, and sodium. These minerals are required in the production of electrolytes. As we get older the body may not be as efficient in processing these minerals or you may need more with age.

Try using a supplement & see if it helps. I use the following:

It may be the side effect of cholesterol lowering medication containing "statin". I stopped having cramps after stopping the medication.

Thanks a lot for the informative replies.

It seems that the common suggestion is that salt/electrolyte deficiency may be the cause. I did read the wiki page on "Cramps" which does suggest that it is one of the main possibilities, but initially ruled it out as I thought my diet was already full of sodium.

Will try and see how it goes. Not going for any supplements as far as possible.

Will bear in mind ... watermelons, bananas, high potassium fruits.

And yes I drink hard liquor but not as much as I used too.
