SINGAPORE - When Madam Jeet Kaur, then 76, went to the hospital to have nodules in her thyroid gland looked at, she was supposed to have been given radioiodine for a scan.
In the end, she was given a dosage about 1,000 times higher than intended.
The error, in March 2007, resulted in Madam Kaur (right) developing hypothyroidism and has to be on thyroxine (a form of hormone) replacement treatment for life.

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones to keep the metabolism working.
Three years later, she was diagnosed with low-grade B cell lymphoma, a slow-growing blood cancer.
Madam Kaur, now 81, and her son, Mr Prithpal Singh Sandu, a businessman, then took the doctor in question and Singapore General Hospital (SGH) to court.
Her legal suit was settled at the end of last month for a sum of $20,000, but the hospital and doctor are refuting that her cancer was the result of the overdose.
Mr Singh told The New Paper: "Both Dr Tee Shang-Ian and SGH did not dispute the mistake in dosage."
Dr Tee, who is now with the National Skin Centre, had in his affidavit admitted his mistake while administering the radioiodine. He was in the laboratory preparing therapeutic doses of the substance when a radiographer put the prescription in his hands.
"I admit I did look at the prescription, yet overed the units. It was actually for a diagnostic dose, but I got confused and gave a much larger therapeutic dose, which I am more used to preparing and administering," he said in his affidavit.
He administered a dose of 90 millicurie of radioiodine to Madam Kaur, instead of the intended 80 to 100 microcurie needed for the scan.

Under compensated. At least a million and life time free healthcare would be the minimum. A million is just a tiny fraction of the doctor's income.

With out very deep pockets to take these bastards all the way to the end of the legal process to demand for the rightful amount of compensation, common folks lives are literally worth a few dollars according to those in charge of the system!

A million dollars for a 76 year old??? You have to be joking. Compensation awards assess "value" based on projected loss of income etc. At 76, it would be nowhere close to a 7 figure sum.

I'd put the figure between $20,000 to $200,000 depending upon earning capacity and health status.

However, nobody is stopping any individual from purchasing term life insurance and medical insurance based on their own assessment of their value to their loved ones.

I'm covered by the health system in NZ but I pay regular premiums to a private health insurance company because I don't want to be dependent upon the creaky, overburdened national health service where it takes forever for anything to happen.

With private insurance, if I'm told on monday that I need an operation, it will be done by the end of the week. With the govt system, it will be some time in 2014 or later.

That's bloody unscrupulous of you. True, the government must put a dollar value on its citizens as well as its military personnel in economic forecasting and military engagement. However that does not mean you should imitate. There's absolutely no reason why a private citizen (which i assume you to be) should place dollar values on something as intrinsic as the worthiness of a human life.

People voluntarily organize self-help groups and community projects because they know the govt can, or is willing, to do only so much, and that the worthiness of a life goes far beyond any material calculation.

The state must provide basic welfare to all individuals, especially those most in need. That is not an economic goal. It is to preserve the basic humanity in society and promote the right values that would enable society to withstand adversity. If you rob society's ability to treasure human life and dignity, the moral erosion would be like a cancer that would ultimately compromise the quality of all aspects of life -- economic, social, spiritual, etc.

This concept is well and good in a land of milk and honey.

However, we live in the 21st century where intense competition is the order of the day.

In a society where resources are limited, welfare should be given to those who are most deserving and not to those who are most in need.

In NZ, billions of dollars a year goes to those in so called "need". The majority of the needy are dysfunctional single parent families who spend their welfare cheques at the pokey machines and liquor outlets while their numerous children from numerous fathers are left at home unattended and unloved.

Giving to the "needy" does nothing but breed generation after generation of lazy louts who have never worked a day in their lives while the hardworking and industrious are taxed to death to fund their alcohol, gambling and drug habits of these layabouts.

Hawkeye is talking about "basic welfare", not cradle to grave support. I have no intentions to see hard earned income of people to feed the lazy, single mums who are now an industry in some developed countries and covering rentals so that each kid in a 5 kid family above a certain age gets a room for himself.

These are people who are unfortunate, fallen ill and the incapable. These are people who may have contributed economically to the country. They should not lose their dignity, cap in hand and beg for help.

In a city state like Sinkland the worth of a common Sinkie life is equal to the ability to engage the type of lawyers the Sinkie can afford.

Of course, this applies only to non political civil matters, where the amount compensation is the issue!

In Spore it is common for the prosecutor to ask for a "deterrent" sentence to dissuade others from doing the same.

With so many "honest mistakes" going on I'm sure that you would agree that some doctors would exercise more care if their pocket books are threatened.

Doctors are a privileged lot in S'pore. Susan Lim was just unlucky because the Royal Lee family had to appease the Royal family in Brunei.
