IN PARLIAMENT yesterday, two former army generals went through their battle plans to improve the social service sector and the workplace.

Both Acting Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing and Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin brought a military-style "systems" approach, bringing their organisational planning skills to bear on these sectors.

And like good generals, both would do well to heed the foot soldiers: the MPs, who were quick with suggestions and questions.

Mr Chan was Chief of Army before entering politics in 2011, and it shows in his blitzkrieg approach towards improving the social service sector. His ministry will build more childcare centres, more centres for seniors, and more seniors' group homes (two to 60), among other plans for the next few years.

It's really amazing how these non-conscript people (women, and occasionally some foreigners) would make absurd statements about things they have zero knowledge of.
