With some individuals, the SDA, RP and now the SDP announcing their intentions to contest in the BE, I will like to offer my sincere and heartfelt apologies to the WP.

In particular, I will like to offer my hearfelt apologies to WP's enthusiastic supporters, its unofficially sanctioned IB (WP members / astroturfers posting in their capacity as "anonymous individuals" and not "party members") who have worked themselves into a frenzy and are stomping their petulant feet in anger at the brazeness, rudeness and temerity of these individuals and parties treating the WP as their equals and wanting to contest in the Punggol East by-election. These parties clearly have no knowledge or concept of democracy or what democracy entails. In the wise words of PAP's George Yeo, such individuals and parties do not know their place in society and make "no distinction between the senior and junior party, or what the Hokkiens describe as boh tua boh suay".

To these individuals, the SDA, RP and the SDP, I will like to once again remind them of George Yeo's words of wisdom. With furrowed brows and a stern wag of his finger, he declared on 19 February 1995 that:

"You must make distinctions - what is high, what is low, what is above, what is below".

With 6 MPs and 2NMPs in Parliament, the WP is very clearly and obviously a "high" party. Without any seats in Parliament, the other parties are not only "low" but are, to put it bluntly, a "below" class. As WP's Sylvia Lim, with a flick of her hair and toss of her upturned nose, smirked and stated "we are in Parliament, they are not". And with its convincing, dizzying and sizzling parliamentary performances and its fearless, fearsome and robust engagements in Parliamentary debates, the WP and its supporters have clearly shown why the WP, and the WP alone, are entitled to and deserves to be in Parliament. It is not unlike that of the sentiments and belief of the PAP who believe that the PAP, and the PAP alone, are entitled to and deserves to be in Parliament.

I would like to call upon these individuals and these parties to withdraw their planned candidacies for the BE and to allow only the WP to contest the BE. These individuals and parties should set their egos aside and defer them to the egos of the WP and its supporters. If they do not, I share the beliefs of the WP's very wise and highly intelligent members, astroturfers and supporters that these individuals and parties cannot be trusted and that they are working for the PAP. Conversely, if these individuals and parties withdraw their planned candidacies for the BE, it is then proof that they can be trusted and are not working for the PAP, i.e until another time comes when they do not defer to the WP. When that time comes, I will once again share the revived beliefs of these very wise and highly intelligent WP individuals that these "opposition" individuals and "opposition" parties cannot be trusted and that they are working for the PAP.

My simple message to these SDA, RP and SDP unsmiling political poseurs is to brush up on their knowledge of democracy and know what democracy entails, heed George Yeo's wise words, withdraw their planned candidacies for the Punggol East BE and, in the name of true democracy, leave it only for the WP, to contest. Once again, this is what the PAP's Venerable George Yeo said:

"You must make distinctions - what is high, what is low, what is above, what is below".

In response to SDP's announcement yesterday, if the WP truly strives for democracy in Sg, it should issue a public statement that it wholly welcomes SDP's participation in the PE BE (if it is called), all in the name of fair and open political competition of ideas and service to the people.

That's if only WP truly believes in true democracy (and acts less like an arrogant political brute).

another instant of a sinkie who disgrace himself by not brushing up his vocab and apply it to his sinkie life. Is that what sinkie education is all about?

in sbf, don't take every post at face value. take it with a pinch of salt. there are such thingies as satire and spoofs. this is a dig at wp. the pap quotes in bold give it away. :p

What do the common peasantry know about running a small country with no natural resources, hmmm? Let the experts take care of it while you sit back and play with your latest electronic gadget, sample the newest dining establishment, or perhaps save a dolphin or two.

How ironic. In 1992 the Marine Parade BE was called to allow JBJ to contest. He would have done so except that a team led by CSJ stood in his way.
Not much distinction between the two. Both always considered themselves "above".

The wheel has now turned full circle.

The past will always haunt those with a history. This particularly applies to those who have thought themselves to be "above". :D

i didn't read the whole post , only the first and the last paragraph...so a misunderstood from me.

This gave it away! Sylvia nose is not pointy enough.

All parties will enjoy multi-cornered fights next GE. I trust that some will not chicken out.

Dear PT

I believe you know me well as a WP member and supporter from the days of old. Do note that politically , PE is not Hougang, thus One more or One less does not make a difference in the larger scheme of things in parliament. Some supporters will be loud and fervent but there is a bottom line behind the passion and it is as follows

The debate and questions about the WP style from the days of old will carry over into this BE. The numbers will reflect in my view the split nationally in the PE of 2011 plus minus three percent.

You might not like it, the WP might not like it, but the numbers are clear, under any FPTP system, An SDP style party needs SDP hard core supporters, WP moderate opposition supporters and natural PAP supporters willing to vote for a WP style opposition.

The PE BE will just again reflect this split. Whatever Jufrie and the SDP does this round, I hope saner heads and thinking prevails for a GE. We can compete against each other in a BE, after all its just a SEAT. But in a GE hopefully heads do not clash, egos do not bruise despite the hard bargaining.

All opposition parties enjoy multi-cornered fights? This is a new theory to me. They will enjoy if they do not want to win. Or if they have no hope of winning, they might enjoy the chance to enter into a fight.

But, by the way. Is there any rule that says that an opposition candidate cannot enter into a 3-cornered fight even in a general election? No but why are parties not doing it?

Parties choose not to because they want to win, not to lose. Some avoid this because of fear of losing their deposits especially the smaller parties without the resources to launch a proper campaign.

Honestly, the ones who will enjoy multi-cornered fights are PAP and their IB and pseudo critics who have nothing to lose. Being in an election and not win is a very expensive exercise.

It had to come to this.

This concept of reserved seating based on minor attributes of the past is nonsense. My sense is that it has been wrongly interpreted by supporters and minor party officials.

I suspect that common sense will prevail and there will be consensus. It will depend on the individual put forward by each party rather than the party itself.

There will be elements with the Tan Jee Say mentality but that can't be helped. They will pay the price just like Tan Jee Say has.

Dear Scroo,

The concept of reserved seating has as much to do with a mind map of politics in Singapore and how to win in Singapore. The WP or the WP's political cultural base is formed from Low's experiences. In his mind , one can knock on doors and sell the party newsletter every weekend to win seats and build party branding. The very idea of a JB style strategic exploitation of a momentary weakness in Anson is seen as impossible in this day and age.

Knocking on doors every week for years involves effort and hence the notion of "reserved seating" Why should anyone walk in a GRC for years only to see it disappear in the smoke of a three cornered fight ?

The SDP culture is one of protest , forums which has now evolved lately into more grassroots work, i.e block parties ? Any investment in door to door visits ? I doubt it because if it was done I would have read or heard abt it the SDP PR machinery being as strong as it is

So its as much as clash of " How to beat the PAP' as it is a clash of egos.
