LTK mentioned that a fully independent media is a cornerstone of a 1st world nation.
Isn't he stating the impossible?
It is known fact that a fully independent media is not allowed here.
It may can exist in cyberspace but certainly not on papers.

Either the media will control the politicians or the politicians will control the media. Singapore politicians will never allow the former. The media will always lean one side or the other. It's actually good to know the bias of the MSM. We can then discount what they say. What we need is a diverse media representing many points of view. In the absence of this, the cyber world takes over. I don't think this is an entirely happy state of affairs but still better than only having one media channel.

Go listen to Tony Blair in the Levenson inquiry.

Seems that now, the battle has turn to LTK versus ZaoBao chief editor Wu XinDi.
Without verifying the authenticity of the leaked CEC minutes, they go ahead and publish it.
This goes the same for the earlier YSL scandai news. Just basing on unconfirmed rumors,
wanbao even make headline big big news on it.
Seriously, if this news came from the pappies camp, would the papers have the audacity
to publish it without 100% confirming it is real, and getting the "approval" of the pappies?
If any local private media do that, rest assured they would be sue to bankrupty and closed them
with immediate effect.

In order to have a "fully independent" media, you need a sizeable number of media organisations that collectively represent the full range of the political spectrum.

Alas, this can never take root in uniquely Sinkapore because it has been mandated by the Almighty that all media organisations must belong to the umbrella co. called SPH or its equivalent Mediacorpse with their head honchos carefully handpicked.

Truly 'independent' media, no. Even in the West, media companies are still beholden to the interests of their largest shareholders, e.g. Turner's left-wing CNN vs Murdoch's fascist Fox News.

What we should strive for is pluralistic media, comprising entities and organizations that span the entire political and economic spectrum.

Samleong is right (pun intended).

In other 'more democratic' nations, the media aren't necessarily more 'independent'. Many of them openly support or even endorse a specific candidate. However, for each paper supporting one party or candidate, there will be another paper supporting a different party or candidate, since there are so many different papers available that covers the political spectrum.

Here in Singapore, we have a few papers that all claim to be independent, but I think most of us think that isn't really the case.

There is no such thing as an independent press. But what is needed is check and balances. If ST is pro PAP than we need a Herald that is anti PAP.Simple.

But Singapore being a tiny nation. Not ,many can survive or economically viable.A reason LKY used to circumvent any democracy left.

But what we desperately need indeed is independent minded folks.Who can read through state propaganda. That is grossly lacking.

fully independant media or news is possible, but that will only mean that they require to source for their own funds & sponsors to finance the daily pressing. as for the state owned media/news, they lost their backbone when they kowtow to the hands that feed them. therefore it comes as no surprise that they bother to publish about others, and in so doing, put them in bad light.

so far, TOC is doing quite a good job in trying to keep perspectives neutral. their effort is definitely commendable, considering much of the coverage r from volunteers, and rolled out by a small core team.

if we want to see more neutral news, maybe 4D/TOTO winners should consider pledging a token to keep them afloat.

It doesn't matter where the funding comes from. Every editorial team has its built in biases. That is why its important to draw information from numerous sources.
