back in those days, it was rare to see a woman in politics.....
1) they thought she was a harmless girl?
2) someone in PAP has a soft spot for her?
3) someone in WP has a soft spot for her?
4) it is not so simple...
Rare for a woman to be in politics so Sylvia qualified as the chairman of WP,you say?
Please read up on politics in Singapore. There were much braver woman than Sylvia. And Sylvia's hobby is wine drinking. An anomaly of patrician class wearing Worker's cloth.
She is a total misfit.Unless,I speculate ,it's an appointment of sort where PAP places chairmanships;that it needs to control.Quite akin to Ho Ching's as Temasek Holdings, where Ho Ching's engineering background is totally unfit to manage sovereign funds. As much KL born Saw Paik Hwa,again whose degree and experience running a retail duty free shop is totally unfitting to run a public transportation system.
It's not a coincident that all are women.
