Young Singaporeans: The Singapore Dream is Dying

I grew up in an era that our country preached the 5-Cs, raise 2-3 kids, having university degree, having hotel ballroom wedding and honeymoon and annual tours flying with Singapore airlines.

At this turning point in Singapore’s history, I think our kids are doing worse than their parent. If they want their condo, tour, car, they probably got to give up raising kids. If they want to well in education, the parents got to spend over a thousand a month in enrichment courses.

Did Singapore’s pro-foreigners policies kill the Golden Goose? Or have our economic policies enslaved our young?

Education

Visit a top primary school and you will wonder why numerous foreign-born students are enrolled, instead of those kids whose fathers or grandfathers (local ladies married foreigners) served NS.

In our elite secondary schools & Junior Colleges, one couldn’t help wonder if you had visited another country. Here we are, providing highly subsidized educations or scholarships (with free lodging and allowances to numerous ASEAN scholars, PRCs, Indians, Malaysians. It’s the same situation in NUS and NTU, which spending millions every year to recruit scholars from different parts of Asia, while our own kids forced to enter tier-two SIT, SUTD, SUSS, SIM, private universities or worse, overseas.

(Please note that it is academically easier for a Malaysian of similar intellect to be enrolled in NUS or NTU with STPM + Scholarship/Bursary, than a local Singapore A-levels or Poly student).

Even in our neighbourhood primary and secondary schools, there are a lot of things that MOE leave, to the enrichment centers to teach, creating a billion-dollar industry, costing many parents about a thousand per month. Even teachers got to send their own kids to enrichment classes.

Career

The Singapore boys spend 2 years in National Service with medicore allowance, before they could be enrolled into local universities. Foreigners could not enjoy this “privilege” and can only help fuck lonely local girls in dorms.

Top foreign MNCs like 3M and HP hire plenty of Indians, Malaysian and China youths in Singapore not because they are cheaper but simply because they have no reservist obligations. Bear in mind that these foreigners are given attractive pay packages and housing-allowances. Gone are the days that most foreign white-collar workers were paid lower than their Singaporean-equivalents.

Nobody (hardly, anyone)'s childhood ambition was be a civil servant. Many local young chaps resign to fate and join the stat boards and civil service, only to realized that they are hired on contract and subjected to the humiliation and scrutiny of the Pinoy or Malaysian PR in HR.

It is making them depressed, making them angry, turning life into a struggle. Our young are disadvantaged on home ground in various aspects. This is exactly what they are going through now. Looks like, only when they fall from the corporate ladder, they won the welfare lottery with skillsfuture credits.

Living Expenses

If a young couple wants to own a condo to raise 2-3 kids, they will probably owe over a million-dollar, serving $5000-6000 a month for home loan, of which, $3000 for interest-payment. If they wish to own a new car, that would be another $2000-3000 a month for depreciation, loan interest, fuels, insurance, road tax and maintenance.

There is rising wealth-gap between seniors and young parents. To enjoy the same standard of living, our young parents incur a larger debt than their parents when they were at the same stage of life.

With our rising cost of housing, be it a $1.5million condo, $700K for a 3-BR HDB BTO at outskirts of town or $700K for 4-BR in further locations, along with $100K renovations. There is no doubt their pay are higher these days, but their purchasing power are significantly lower than their seniors. Our young parents will be spending 25-30 years paying off these debts, while their parents took half the time during their era.

All these, are with the assumption that they can put up with the stress in workplace and none of them get retrenched or lost their ability to work.

Happy Mother's Day & Happy Father's Day

Well, the better-off ones are those with rich parents who helped them with deposits or payments. for their first property.

Oh yes, dead parents, give them wealth too. Few will ever see $100K in their bank balances, so sibling rivalries are really common these days; and LPAs and Wills get amended repeatedly. Many are so filial to their parents now because they stand to inherit $500K-$1million worth of HDB and CPFs.

so, Happy Mothers’ Day, and Happy Fathers’ Day ahead.

Many sinkies achieved the Singapore dream. They can afford new condos, ECs or BTO on prime land like Queenstown.

It's called a dream because you would have to be asleep to believe it.

Two decades of the Useless Son in charge has done irreparable damage. And that is why term limits, alongside various other checks and balances, are necessary. :o-o:

Contemplate on this when Seatwarmer Wong takes charge next week.

"I grew up in an era that our country preached the 5-Cs, raise 2-3 kids, having university degree, having hotel ballroom wedding and honeymoon and annual tours flying with Singapore airlines".
.
The PAP has managed the following for all (if not most) Sinkies:
. with the mismanagement of our transport system, owning a car is beyond the reach of Sinkies.
. registering your marriage at ROM is possible but not grand weddings at hotel ballrooms.
. owning a matrimonial home is a challenge with high cost of public housing.
. with the high cost of bringing up a child, it is now deemed irresponsible to have kids.
. a holiday but with budget airlines.
,
This present decline is set to continue if no significant change is made to government policies.

They borrowed huge loans from government to lease those expensive properties. What dreams were you talking about?
