DISQUALIFIED from hiring a maid because for employment offences, Siti Farhana Mohamed Yahkup got her younger sister to apply for her. Ms Ningsih, 29, an Indonesian started work in April 2008. Seven months later, her flight stewardess boss assaulted her by grabbing her head and banging it against the wall of her Pasir Ris Drive flat.
She also punched the maid several times on the chest. In a district court on Thursday, Siti Farhana was jailed two months for maid abuse. She was also fined $5,000 for conspiring with her sister Siti Farziana, 28, to provide false information to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Her husband, Mohammed Szami At'tirmidzi Supa'at was more fortunate.
He was charged with kicking Ms Ningsih on the left shin also in November 2008, but the airline customer service officer was allowed to have his case compounded and he was granted a discharge amounting to an acquittal. To compound an offence means an accused person pays the victim compensation, and the criminal charge is dropped.
This would require the consent of the victim, the prosecution and the court. The amount of compensation handed to Ms Ningsih was not revealed to the court. When asked later, the couple's lawyer S.S. Dhillon said that the terms of the agreement to compound the case were strictly confidential.
