SINGAPORE: A 23-year-old Malaysian woman has been sentenced to seven months' jail for stealing valuables worth S$88,673.80 from her aunt.

Patricia Tan Mei Ling stole the items at around 2.30pm on January 27.

The valuables were stored in two locked suitcases and placed in her mother's flat at block 574, Pasir Ris Street 53.

They include a Rolex watch, a pair of jade earrings, a diamond ring and a diamond pendant.

Tan committed the crime with an alleged accomplice, her then-boyfriend, 25-year-old Gunasegaran Ramasamy.

After breaking open the suitcases near the flat, she went to a pawnshop with him.

They pawned the watch and jade earrings for S$1,800, even though the two items were worth $7,529.

Some of the other items, including the diamond ring and pendant were later either sold or pawned.

They received $9,350 for doing so and the money was used for their personal expenses.

Gunasegaran has been charged with being an accomplice but he failed to turn up in court.

A warrant of arrest has been issued and he is still at large.

Tan could have been sentenced to up to seven year's jail and fined.

WITH the help of her 25-year-old boyfriend, Patricia Tan Mei Ling, 23, stole $88,600 worth of jewellery, watches and other valuables belonging to her aunt in Jan. Only $7,600 worth of items were recovered. The rest, valued at $81,000, had been pawned or sold by the duo for only $9,350. Tan was jailed seven months on Wednesday. As she has been in remand since Feb 8, she could be released very soon.

Her boyfriend, identified in court documents as Gunasegaran Ramasamy, is still at large. A community court heard that Tan, who is a Malaysian citizen, is the adopted daughter of Madam Kok Kim Lee, 52. In their Pasir Ris flat were two suitcases belonging to Madam Kok's 64-year-old sister, who left them there for safekeeping while she was on a trip to Turkey.

At 2.30pm on Jan 27, Tan telephoned her adoptive mother to check on her whereabouts. When she found out that no one was at home, Tan went to the flat and took her aunt's two suitcases to Gunasegaran, who was waiting at a nearby void deck. They forced open the locked suitcases and stole the items.

The duo later pawned a ladies Rolex Oyster watch and two pairs of jade earrings, valued at a total of $7,500, and received $1,800. They later pawned the remainder of the loot, comprising a $33,500 diamond ring, a $32,000 pair of diamond earrings, a $11,300 diamond pendant, and a $420 Netbook, for a total of $7,550.

Tan did not return home after the theft and Madam Kok made a police report on Feb 1. The young woman planned to escape to Malaysia with Gunasegaran and start life anew. She arranged to get her passport from her mother on Feb 6 but police were waiting for her. She could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.
