A Chinese woman came to blows with a Beijing subway inspector after she tried to enter a station without getting her bag checked by security officials, mainland media reports.

The woman claimed she did not want her bag screened because she was not taking the subway train, merely intending to walk across the Olympic Park station concourse from one exit to another, the Beijing Times reported.

She claimed she was struck in the face during the row and had then struck the man back.

One man who witnessed the argument, told the Times: “The [inspector] grabbed the woman’s collar, punched her twice and kicked her, while the woman hit him back.”

Both the inspector and the woman were detained by police for further questioning.

Beijing stepped up its security checks on public transport before last month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, held in the Chinese capital.

All pedestrians must now have their hand baggage scanned at entrances to the subway, even if they want to cross the station concourse, rather than taking the subway.
