A WOMAN was charged in court on Thursday with cheating her colleagues and friends of a total of $138,300 by claiming that her brother overseas needed money urgently for a major operation.
Ng Lay Har, 41, was working in a manufacturing company in Woodlands when she allegedly conned 13 victims between June 2009 and January last year.
She is said to have cheated the victims of between $2,000 and $47,300 each by deceiving them into believing that her brother was in Thailand and was in urgent need of money for heart surgery.
The prosecution requested two weeks' adjournment for investigation to be completed.
Her request for an order that her photograph and name not be published was turned down by District Judge Lim Tse Haw, who adjourned the case to April 14.
If convicted, she faces a fine and a jail term of up to 10 years.
