Woman arrested for loansharking harassment

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 33-year-old woman for suspected involvement in loansharking harassment.
Police say they received several reports of loanshark harassments last month. Paint was splashed and loanshark-related writings were found on the walls of HDB blocks in the Jurong East housing estates.
Following the reports, police analysed the crime patterns and stepped up patrols in the vicinity of the HDB blocks.
On June 5 at about 4 pm, police officers spotted the suspect behaving suspiciously outside a HDB unit in the vicinity of Jurong East Street 21.
Following an interview, they placed her under arrest for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.
Loanshark-related paraphernalia, such as cans of paint, marker pens, mobile phones, surgical masks, gloves and a note book with debtors' records, were recovered from her possession and seized as case exhibits.
The suspect will be charged in Court on June 7 under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010).
First-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting harassment can be punished with a jail term of up to five years and a fine between S$5,000 and S$50,000.
