SINGAPORE: The man who failed in his bids to contest in the 2011 General and Presidential elections said he'll be back as an independent candidate in the Punggol East by-election, set for 26 January.

Mr Ooi Boon Ewe, 71, was the first to show up at the Elections Department at 10:40am on Thursday to collect the nomination papers.

He told reporters that he's running for the seat, as politics is in his blood.

Mr Ooi, who lives in Sengkang and is self-employed, said he'll be a full-time Member of Parliament, if elected.

But he acknowledged that it'll be a tough fight, and added that he's prepared for it.

Mr Ooi said even though he's not confident because of what had happened in his past attempts, he'll continue to come up with new ideas. "When you're an experienced politician, you're not scared of anything. You're a fighter. So you fight," he said.

SINGAPORE: The Workers' Party (WP) Secretary General Low Thia Khiang said the party is ready to contest the by-election in Punggol East.

Mr Low said his party will announce the candidate in due course and added that the logistics are ready for the by-election.

Speaking to the media before the start of his Meet-the-People session on Wednesday evening, Mr Low said that it is good that the prime minister has decided to call a by-election as soon as possible.

He said it is fair so that residents of Punggol East can have a representative of their own.

He said: "It is logical for the PAP to call and settle the by-election issue in Punggol East as soon as possible. PAP is the incumbent in Punggol, they have an advantage being an incumbent unlike Hougang, thereby it is logical for the prime minister to settle it and call (a by-election) as fast as possible before any party can further entrench and establish themselves there."

Mr Low said he does not want to speculate on the results but said that the voters have seen what the party can offer and will leave it up them to decide.

On the possibility of facing a six-cornered fight, Mr Low said so far there are no plans to have a joint meeting with other opposition parties who have voiced their interest to contest in the ward.

When asked if the recent saga involving Aljunied-Hougang Town Council and Action Information Management (AIM) will have an impact on the by-election, Mr Low said: "I welcome the Prime Minister's announcement to review the town councils' fundamentals as well as to investigate. I welcome the response to the issues the Workers' Party have raised to the attention of Singaporeans."

The party has issued a call for volunteers to help with the by-election.

SINGAPORE: Reform Party's Secretary-General Kenneth Jeyaretnam has said his party is "strongly considering" whether or not to contest the upcoming Punggol East by-election.

But Mr Jeyaretnam said he will be the candidate fielded if the party does decide to do so.

He added that he would re-locate to live in Punggol East if he is elected.

"Punggol East you know is a quarter the size of West Coast, and so despite the short amount of time available, we are very confident. Locally on the ground, the residents have the same issues as most constituencies," he said.

On the possibility of a six-cornered fight, Mr Jeyaretnam said it is healthy for Singapore that the people are given a choice on ideology and who they think will be most effective.

Chairman of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood said news of the by-election being called for Punggol East came as a surprise.

He said the SDP did not expect that the Prime Minister would decide on the by-election so soon.

Speaking to the media at the Punggol East ward on Wednesday evening, Mr Jufrie said even though the party is ready for a contest, it would have to accelerate its campaign.

He said the party would be announcing its candidate within the next few days.

Mr Jufrie added that as far as possible, the party would try to avoid a multi-cornered fight.

He said that his party hopes to persuade the Workers' Party to give the voters the option of electing another opposition party.

But he added that if that does not happen, the SDP is firm on contesting the by-election.

Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) Desmond Lim said the news of the by-election date came as no surprise, and that the party is "operationally-ready".

He said it would be better for Punggol East SMC to have a parliamentary representative as soon as possible, rather than a caretaker one.

Mr Lim confirmed that the SDA would be fielding a candidate but declined to reveal a name for now.

Mr Lim said: "Well, it's good to have more than two parties in the Parliament. Parliament needs to have a diversified voice, and this will prevent, in case, the two parties come into coalition, there will still be other opposition voices in Parliament."

SINGAPORE: Chairman of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood collected three sets of nomination papers at the Elections Department on Thursday.

But he remained tight-lipped about who the party plans to field as a candidate in the Punggol East by-election, set for 26 January.

He told reporters that the SDP will reveal "very soon" who it has in mind.

He added that he's hopeful that The Workers' Party (WP) will discuss ways to avoid any clash, if possible, in the single-seat ward.

Mr Jufrie said the SDP has sent notes to WP, inviting it for discussions.

He said the ball is in WP's court.

When asked if he's optimistic about WP's response, Mr Jufrie replied: "I'm hopeful but I don't know. It's up to them."

The SDP had signalled that it'll contest for the seat of Member of Parliament, left vacant after Mr Michael Palmer of the People's Action Party resigned over an extramarital affair.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has published three letters it sent to The Workers' Party (WP) on its party's website.

In the letters, the SDP extended an invitation to the WP to meet and discuss the opposition's participation in the by-election in Punggol East.

The SDP said it first wrote to the WP on Tuesday, a day before the Writ of Election was issued.

In a letter addressed to WP Chairman Sylvia Lim, SDP Chairman Jufrie Mahmood said he would like to invite Ms Lim and her party colleagues to discuss their parties' positions, with regard to an expected by-election being called.

Mr Jufrie said specifically, the SDP would like to explore the possibility of one opposition party contesting against the PAP in the by-election.

The SDP said it proposed to meet on Saturday.

But when the by-election was announced, the SDP sent a second letter, proposing to bring the meeting forward to Friday.

The SDP claims it received a reply from Ms Lim that "gave no indication of WP" accepting its invitation.

The party did not publish a copy of the reply from Ms Lim.

The SDP also said it wrote to the WP for a third time.

SDP Secretary-General Chee Soon Juan, in a letter addressed to WP Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang, said he hoped to explore ways on how the parties can offer the best candidate with the best opportunity to defeat the People's Action Party.

He added the SDP would like to work with the WP to avoid a three or multi-cornered fight.

"More importantly, we would like to see how opposition parties can work closer together in the interest of unseating the PAP to bring about a democratic system in Singapore," wrote Mr Chee.

Dr Chee said he hopes to meet and explore how the opposition can co-operate in a more concerted manner starting with this by-election.

He added the correspondence may be made open, as the matter is of "intense public interest".

The WP could not be reached for comment.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has proposed to The Workers' Party (WP) to run a joint campaign in the Punggol East by-election.

SDP's Secretary-General Chee Soon Juan wants to field a candidate from the SDP in the joint campaign.

At a news conference on Friday evening, Dr Chee said the proposal was in the spirit of compromise and cooperation.

He explained that if the opposition wins the by-election, the SDP gets to enter Parliament and The Workers' Party will run the Punggol East Town Council.

Dr Chee said that the SDP Member of Parliament will chair the town council, but will leave the day-to-day running of the town council to the WP.

He hopes this arrangement will signal better cooperation between opposition parties in the future.

Dr Chee said he was disappointed the WP hasn't replied to his earlier invitation to discuss both parties' participation in the by-election.

He said the SDP has emailed the proposal to WP, and is seeking a meeting with WP on Saturday.

Dr Chee refused to commit if the party will continue to contest should the WP not accept its proposal.

He said the SDP will only back down if the WP has a "stronger case".

He added that talks will continue right until the last minute before Nomination Day.

"A successful unity candidate would mean another seat in Parliament for the opposition. It would lay the ground for bigger opposition representation in the next general election," said Dr Chee.
