What a square! Box-wearing robber removes head covering to get a better look at stolen loot right in front of camera's view

  • A Florida man was recorded robbing a phone repair store with a box on his head
  • The box slipped for a moment to reveal his face, leading to his eventual arrest
A man was captured on surveillance video robbing a phone repair store in Miami with a cardboard box over his head, but lifted the box to get a better look at the loot, revealing his face to the camera.

Having collected the footage, the store's owner, Jeremias Berganza, found the thief hours later drinking at a liquor store and called the police, who arrested the man.

The bizarre incident happened at around 4am on May 3 and saw the thief initially get away with 19 iPhones and $8,000 in cash - with a total value of $15,000, Berganza told NBC.

Video showed the man wearing a white box over his head as he attempted to smash open a glass cabinet within which the phones were displayed.

After an initial unsuccessful attempt he was able to break open the top of the cabinet and began sweeping phones into a bag.

Due to the position of the surveillance camera, it was not possible to make out his face until for a moment he lifted up the box to get a better look at the phones he was taking.

Berganza said he shared images from the theft with people working in the shopping plaza where the store is located and asked for people to look out for the man.

When he was located drinking with friends at the local liquor store, Miami Gardens police officers were notified and the man was arrested.

The identity of the thief was not released by cops.
