fucking useless MoM does not even know how many Singaporeans are unemployed and underemployed. All these while once a person is unemployed for more than 7 days, auto remove from database, and not counted as unemployed. That is why unemployment figure always look so swee.

And useless TCJ did not even say if he will get MoM to start collecting these data. Cannot handle foreign workers, and don't even know what is happening to own citizens. Pay him to be minister for what?

Getting economically inactive Singaporeans back to work
Posted: 14 January 2013 2103 hrs

SINGAPORE: In a written reply to a question in Parliament, Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said the Manpower Ministry does not keep a record of all economically inactive Singaporeans.

Nominated Member of Parliament Mr Teo Siong Seng asked Mr Tan if the Manpower Ministry keeps a record of economically inactive Singaporeans and what measures are there to help this group of Singaporeans join the workforce to address the manpower shortage faced by local enterprises.

In his reply, Mr Tan said that based on the Labour Force Survey, it is estimated that in June 2012, around 418,000 residents aged 25 to 64 were economically inactive.

Out of these, four in five, or about 336,000, were women. The same survey also showed that 90,000 of all economically inactive residents aged 25 to 64 intended to seek employment within the next two years.

Many have other responsibilities and often cite family and care-giving duties as reasons keeping them out of the workforce.

The government has put in place measures to help remove and minimize the barriers facing those who wish to return to work.

These include funding support to help employers redesign jobs, put in place flexible working arrangements and hire the economically inactive.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) provides funding for all individuals, including the economically inactive, to upgrade their skills and improve their employability.

I took a train around 11am this morning, and counted at least 3 men in my cabin in their 40s who didn't look like they were going to work or out for lunch.

Alamak! I reread this article only to realise how ridiculous our parliament has become. Critical labour issues are now being raised by NMPs instead of the party candidates who purportedly represent the proletariat.

Voters of Ponggol East SMC, this is my plea to you. 2016 is not that far off. This coming by-election in 2013, show the WP you are not happy with their parliamentary performance. Teach them a lesson they will never forget! Give them a black eye they will remember for the next 3 years! Let them feel the wrath of a people spurned by false messiahs. Make your vote count this coming election!
