SINGAPORE - Two people have been arrested in connection to their flatmate's death in a HDB flat in Woodlands.

The police had found a 27-year-old Singaporean woman dead on Monday morning in a third-floor flat in Block 878 in Woodlands Avenue 9.

They nabbed her Singaporean flatmates - a 36-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman - later on the same day.

Neighbours said the trio moved in about half a year ago, and had probably rented the flat.

"They kept to themselves," said a neighbour, who wanted to be known only as Melody. "They had friends over sometimes, but they weren't noisy."

Another neighbour said that she and the woman who died both worked in the nearby shopping mall, Causeway Point, and used to run into each other on the bus several times a week.

The neighbour, who wanted to be known only as Ms Xu, said that she often saw bruises on the woman's face and arms.

"I would ask her what happened, and she would tell me that she had fallen down," Ms Xu said. "She would cover them up with a thick layer of powder."

SINGAPORE - A couple were charged in court on Wednesday with the murder of a woman at a Woodlands flat on Monday morning.

Pua Hak Chuan, 35, and Tan Hui Zhen, 31, allegedly caused the death of Ms Annie Ee Yu Lian, 26, a waitress, at their third-floor unit of Block 878 Woodlands Avenue 9 at 9.38am on Monday.

The couple were calm when the charge was read to them in Mandarin.

They were remanded at Central police division lock-up with permission to take them out for investigation.

Ms Ee, who was working in a Japanese restaurant at Causeway Point, addressed Tan as "big sister" and was not related to the couple.

Paramedics found her lying on a mattress in a bedroom of the flat.

The couple will return to court next Wednesday.
