Two men arrested for alleged bike thefts in Tampines

With the aid of CCTV cameras installed inside a lift in one instance, officers from the Crime Strike Force (CSF) of Tampines Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) managed to identify the suspects. At 10am on Wednesday (Feb 26), the younger suspect, aged 23, was arrested in the vicinity of Tampines Street 91. The other suspect, 28, was subsequently arrested in the vicinity of Tampines Street 11 on the same day at 6.35pm. Following their arrests, police officers managed to recover four bicycles which are believed to have been stolen.

Two Arrested For Bicycle Thefts in Tampines
Police have arrested two men, aged 23 and 28, for their suspected involvement in at least three cases of bicycle theft in Tampines.
Between 21 January 2014 and 15 February 2014, several cases of bicycle theft in Tampines were reported to the Police. In these cases, the victims had placed their bicycles outside their homes secured with chains and locks.
With the aid of CCTV cameras installed inside a lift in one of the cases, officers from the Crime Strike Force (CSF) of Tampines Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) conducted intensive ground enquiries to establish the identity of the suspects. On 26 Feb 2014 at 10am, the 23-year-old suspect was spotted by the officers in the vicinity of Tampines St 91 and was placed under arrest. Through follow-up investigations, the 28-year-old suspect was arrested in the vicinity of Tampines Street 11 on the same day at 6.35pm. Following their arrest, the officers managed to recover four bicycles which are believed to be stolen.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the two suspects are believed to be responsible for at least three cases of bicycle theft.
The suspects will be charged in Court on 28 February 2014 for an offence of Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries an imprisonment term which may extend to 3 years, or a fine, or both.
Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Alvin Moh, commended his officers for their strong determination and excellent investigations leading to the arrest.
Bicycle owners can take simple steps to safeguard their bicycles from theft:
a) Keep your bicycle inside your house when you are not using it. If you need to park your bicycle at a public place, park at a designated bicycle parking bay. Indiscriminate parking may result in enforcement actions being taken by relevant agencies;
b) Lock your bicycle when left unattended, even if it is only for a short while. All removable bicycle components should be secured;
c) Use a durable lock. You can consider using a U-lock that provides better security compared to cable locks or use a bicycle lock with an alarm feature.
d) Make unique permanent identification marks such as engravings or affix the Bicycle Security Label on your bicycle. The Bicycle Security Label comes with a unique serial number that helps you and Police to identify your bicycle if it is stolen. You can approach any Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) with your bicycle to collect a label.
