Touch 'n Go: Smartphones can't be hacked to bypass toll gates

A screen grab from a video showing the hacked smartphone being used on the Touch 'n Go scanner.

PETALING JAYA: Cashless system operator Touch 'n Go said that hacked smartphones cannot be used in place of its cards, disputing a viral video showing a man using his mobile phone in place of a Touch 'n Go card.

"To date, there is no conclusive evidence that tampered mobile devices can be used to bypass the system," a company representative said Monday.

The representative was referring to a video uploaded on Facebook last week that showed a man on an unidentified highway purportedly using a mobile phone to beep his way through a toll plaza.

In the 45-second clip, a car driver is seen holding a smartphone as the car approached the toll plaza.

The driver then unplugs the phone and puts it against the toll gate lane's Touch 'n Go scanner.

The scanner beeps and the toll gate boom goes up.

Following its release, Touch 'n Go investigated the video's veracity.

"We found that this video did not reveal any compromise in our system," the representative said.

The representative added that "every single activity" related to its system was under constant monitoring and surveillance, and reassured the public that the integrity of its system was intact.

Touch 'n Go, however, asked the public to report instances of "delinquency and misconduct"to: [email protected].
