Today’s Scripture Reading [November 7, 2010]

An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. [Proverbs 29:22. KJV]

It may not be obvious to many of us but have you ever noticed that we tend to act like the people who are around with us most of the time? A commonly expression that we quite often hear: “Like father like son” has got a strong bearing that people who are very close to us can influence the way we think, the way to talk and the way to live. Nevertheless, not everyone realizes how our relationships with other can affect our lives – for better or for worse.

As humans and especially in this digital period where people are so connected to one another ‘digitally’, we really need to understand what constitutes good friendship and what constitutes poor friendship because in this digital world, anybody can be your friend. We all need friends and this is no exception, and out of desperation to get ourselves recognize by others, or just for pure feelings of affection or personal regard, we may be unwittingly enter into a friendship mode with someone that we ought not to associate with. We all need to be friendly but we don’t need to make everyone who comes into life as friends. In fact, Bible has warned us to be very careful in selecting our friends. We are faced with people who use bad language, have problems with alcohol or drugs, problems with many other addictions, and people simply do not know God personally. They are not our enemies but God has warned us that having them as our friends will affect us. If we continue to associate with them, we likely to be unwitting victim and unknowingly choose and learn many of their ways and get ourselves into trouble.

Consider some of the verses in the Bible and you will realize the seriousness of God’s warning on the danger of having wrong friends. All of these verses are giving us major warnings that we are to stay away from all of the bad apples in this life who will do nothing but try and bring us down to their lower way of living. Many Christians have had their lives totally ruined and destroyed as a result of marrying the wrong people or choosing the wrong kind of friends to hang out with. I pray that these verses will truly guide your selection of friends more wisely.

• He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. [Proverbs 13:20. KJV]
• The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them. [Proverbs 12:26. KJV]
• Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. [Proverbs 22: 24-25. KJV].
• Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. [1 Corinthians 15:33. KJV]
• Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. [Philippians 3:2. KJV]
• Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. [2 Thessalonians 3:6]

Before we really want to come to a close friendship with someone we must therefore learn to evaluate our relationship him or her. We must decide what type of friends we do really want right now. The first step is to identify what constitutes an unhealthy relationship, and they can be quite easily discerned by using the following guidelines:

• People who constantly bring strife, chaos and stress into our lives
• People who drain you and can’t seem to make it without you
• People who want to remind you of your past especially your fault, your failure
• People who want to hold you back from your godly destiny
• People who don’t honour and respect your salvation and who entice you to sin

On the other hand, having Godly friends in our lives is truly beneficial, whether we realize it or not. And you don’t need loads of them. All you need is a handful, perhaps 10, 5, 3 or even 1 and that’s good enough. Where, then, can you find Godly friends? This is not a difficult question because the Bible has given us very specific instruction: You will know them by their fruit (Matthew 7:16; 20). Frankly, if we were just listen to the way our friends speak, the topics that they engage in, the places they often visit, the books they read, and the kind of activities they are involved in, you can easily come to the knowledge of whether you want to continue your friendship with them.

As you will see in the above Scripture verses, they warn us to choose our friends very carefully in this life. They can be summarized very simply: “He who walks with wise people will become wise himself, but that he who keeps company with fools will be destroyed”. The Bible is very specific and it tells us that we are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, that we are to stay away from people who cause divisions and offenses, and to withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly. The tragic event of a polytechnic student who was hacked to death just because of a ‘staring incident’ is a blatant reminder that mixing with a wrong company could cost you more than you could ever expect, and it might, by then, be too late for you to realize. We must be reminded to continuously guide our younger ones the importance of seeking out good friends and the danger of mixing with bad apples. We have to begin this counsel and instruction to our children the minute they knew how to walk and talk. At the same time, as discerning adults we must train them the way of God so that when they grow old, they will not stray (Proverbs 22:6).

Remember, Jesus did not chase after everyone. He ripped on the Pharisees and many of the high-ranking Jewish leaders. Some people are open to be helped, others are not. The Bible tells us to stay away from people who are considered to be “dogs” and to beware of people who are “evil workers.” Let’s begin therefore with ourselves. We may not be the friendliest people; the most likeable let alone loveable. But we can live a life that truly reflects what God intended for us. Let our life journey here on earth, unspoken in words, be a positive influence to others especially those who are closest to us so that they too can live and positively influence others all for the glory of God.

Today’s Scripture Reading [November 14, 2010]

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. [Hebrews 11:6-8. KJV]

As children of God, we must live by faith whether in good time or in bad time. We must learn to grow in our faith, learn to trust Him because God’s plan for us in never a second best, it’s the best! It is simply through this learned response for trusting God that we can remain strong in our Christian faith so as to continue with our struggle and our pursuit for what lies ahead. Most of us have wrongly believed that if we have faith in God everything will turn out wonderful. That is not faith. That is just human idea. God will allow all His faithful servants to experience both wonderful and not-so-wonderful aspects of our faith. The experience that we learned, especially from those not-so-wonderful aspects is God’s plan to prepare us for eternity after all life has just one purpose - to prepare us for the rich eternity.

In Mark 1:9:13 we are told that as soon as Jesus was baptized He was ‘thrust out’ to battle with Satan. This is a plain reminder to us that our faith in the cross of Jesus is not going to be an easy one. We must accept that every now and then we face unwelcomed surprises. For example, in a simple routine medical checkup we may end up with a rude awakening when the doctor told us that we have a cancerous growth in one of our vital organs, or when we were just about to go for a well-deserved lunch with our colleagues we suddenly got a phone call informing us that one of our kids had been involved in a serious road accident. When the world experiences those not so-wonderful aspects, they only understand it as punishment from God. But when we see the suffering servants like Noah who spent over one hundred years building the ark, Abraham who left the comfort of his homeland to wander and live as nomad in tents for forty years, Job, the man with health, wealth and family lost it all in just few days, we can really realize that even the most faithful and loyal servants of God are not spared from unpleasant surprises which nobody desires to have.

As Christians, the very first thing we need to know is one of the world’s greatest lies – the lie of what a good life is. Good life, as thought by this fallen world as having secured, respected, comfortable and prosperous lives. Yes, they are good but for how long can anyone continue to enjoy them. Over and over in the Scriptures we see that God calls us as His people to deny themselves of worldly pleasure, worldly recognition, worldly pride, worldly honour. Jesus never guarantees comfort or prosperity but He promises us peace and joy in all circumstances and we are to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness Matthew 6:33). We are to use our life here on earth just for one purpose - to prepare for the rich eternity.

As with anyone else, relationship needs to be cultivated in order to fully understand one another such as the need to spend time together, have frequent two-way conversation, care sincerely for the interests of each other, and a willingness to sacrifice for each other. So is with God. God is faithful. He has done all that are needed to be done. Before Jesus gave up His Spirit, He cried out “It is finished - My job is complete!” It is now our turn to reciprocate, to cultivate our relationship with Him to become more and more Christ-like. This touches on several important questions that can impact our daily walk with Lord Jesus : (a) How to be in the world yet be separated from it; (b) How do we live as Christian in this ‘unchristian' world; (c) What behaviour should be avoided in expressing and standing for what we believe; (d) How do we keep hatred for people separated from hatred of sin; (e) How to keep from becoming sinfully prejudiced in self-righteousness.

Following is an article listed down 15 ways which, prayerfully, will provide some answers to the above questions, help us to cultivate our relationship with Jesus, and more importantly our growth in Him. May God bless you all the reading of this article.

-------------------------15 Ways to Behave More Christian-------------------------
by Eddie Lawrence

1. Recognize Your Own Sinfulness.

There may be sin you have not personally experienced but that does not mean you don’t have the capacity to commit that sin. It is our sinful nature that leads us to acts of sin. Apart from the grace of God, we are all equally lost and separated from God. It is “only by His Grace” that we can live above the strong downward pull of sin’s gravity.

2. Deal with People as Individual Persons, Not as Groups.

It is both unfair and ungodly to view each individual as if they were personally responsible for all the rhetoric, behavior, and choices of an entire group. When we dismiss someone because they are “white” or “African American” or “Hispanic” we are refusing to see them as having personal value. This is prejudice in its very ugly form. Attitudes like, “They can’t be saved because they are ‘pentecostal” or “Methodist” or “Episcopalian” is very bigoted thinking. Each of us as individuals will stand before God.

3. Be Aware of Self-Righteousness.

Thinking you are above being self-righteous may be evidence you are. Jesus dealt more severely with this attitude than any in Scripture. Our righteousness is God’s gift through Christ, to claim it as a result of our own efforts or abilities is to bring the greatest reproach upon Christ.

4. Be Sensitive to How the Holy Spirit Wants to Bear His Fruit Through You in Regard to Those Trapped in Sin.

The Lord knows how to open the hearts of people and will give you the grace to demonstrate Christ’s love and grace to them.

5. Be Committed to Love (Galatians 5:6).

If it violates love, it violates God. God is love. Faith is to be expressed and operated through love.

6. Be Ready to Give An Answer of the Hope Within You.

Instead of preparing an argument, prepare to present hope. Pride can pull you into a verbal barrage. Allow the Holy Spirit to use the powerful weapons of wisdom, faith, hope, and love to lead others to God’s throne of grace. A battle won by intellect may sound good to the natural ear, but a battle diffused by love and leaving an opponent with that nagging feeling that he has been somehow loved into silence will do more good.

7. Stand Righteously Against Tactics That Betray the Heart of Christ in Dealing with Others.

The weapons of warfare are not carnal. Too often, especially in the fray of battle, we resort to tactics that are rooted in manipulation, m&d-slinging, and corrupt communication. This means we attempt to win a cause for Christ in a spirit opposite Christ.

8. Intercede for Those Who Stand Against You.

Praying for others has multiple benefits that are powerful. It softens your heart to pray for them. It softens their hearts when you pray for them. It brings Heaven to bear upon their lives. It creates an atmosphere that causes the Devil problems in doing what he wants to do.

9. Seek Wisdom and Understanding from the Scripture to Learn the Ways of God. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Our ways and God’s are different. Don’t assume. Seek God’s way in every situation (Proverbs 3:5-6)

10. Handle People with Grace.

This is how God has chosen to deal with us. Pass it on!

11. Speak with Grace.

This means the seed you sow through your words will have the opportunity to bring forth the fruits of grace. This is much better than the seed sown when we speak from the flesh. One is life and the other is death.

12. Learn to Discern Hatred in Your Own Heart.

Does the Holy Spirit work through hatred? No! His fruit is spelled out clearly in Galatians 5:22. Don’t confuse your hatred from someone with righteous anger. Righteous anger rejoices in the prospect of someone drawing near to God. Hatred rejoices in seeing judgment fall upon someone. Remember what Jesus told his disciples when they wanted to call fire down from Heaven upon the Samaritans? “You know not what spirit you are of.”

13. Remember that Religion Has An Ugly Deathly Side to It.

More ungodly acts against people have been done in the name of religion than any other factor. History bears this out. It is easy to tag something about “God” onto whatever crusade is firing up.

14. Rely on the Holy Spirit to Guide You.

Jesus only did what He saw the Father doing. He promised the Holy Spirit would give you what you needed when you needed it. When in doubt, pray it out!

15. Avoid Being Labeled and Being a Label Maker.

Be a love maker not a label maker. Don’t allow people to identify you with a certain tag. This makes it easier for them to pass a quick judgment on you. Avoid the temptation to label others. This will blind you to what you need to know about them and see in them. Ask God to help you see people the way He does. It will always be redemptive in its view.

Today’s Scripture Reading [November 21, 2010]

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. [Proverbs 22:7. KJV].

Christmas is drawing near. To many people both Christians and non-Christians, it is usually a time of excess – excess spending, excess eating and drinking, and excess waste. The last week of December is usually the week that gabbage collectors are very busy collecting discarded wastes that could range from half-consumed food to gift wrappers to plastic bottles, just about anything. Sadly, though it is supposed to be a time to remember the birth of our Saviour, it is often reported that during this period the number of motor accidents is at the highest point with many serious and fatal one. For me as Christian, I view the celebration by many people as nothing more than another festive event and remembering the birth of our Saviour is the last thing that comes to their mind because many are too engrossed with their own excesses.

Over the next couple of weeks you are going to see many commercials appearing in every mass media from newspaper to television to internet the following attractive messages that enticing you to spend, spend and spend!

A Time To Give, A Joy To Receive
A Chance To Win $ 150 worth if dining and shopping vouchers
Christmas marks the end of the year. And the start of my new wardrobe
Charge & Redeem a Resort Stay this Christmas
Get up to 50% off and enjoy other exclusive promotions
The more you spent, the more you save
Reward yourself for free trip to Hong Kong if you spent more than $ 5,000 in a single receipt
Cannot pay now? Don’t worry – we have the interest-free payment plan for you

Mark my words, though some of the above are just illustrations which I have made up but you can be assured they are going to be used by businesses to attract your attention. Many of us may have forgotten that just four years ago, the stock market crashed. There had been a period of high stock prices and many had invested either by borrowing large sums of money from banks or by using their own savings. When the market declined precipitously, their wealth was erased, their speculations were shown to be misguided. Vast fortunes were wiped away in a matter of days. Today, in less than four years, we are in another period of unexpected economic upheaval. Prices of properties sky-rocketed and people seem to have forgotten the financial crisis of the 2007-2008. Banks and many other financial institutions are coming with a vengeance to capture consumer market share. Just open your letter box and you will see many junk mails which are enticing you to buy products and pay them with ‘interest-free’ installment payment scheme. Few Sundays ago, an article titled “More option to buy now, pay later” appeared at the Straits Times. You can now buy almost anything from spectacles and spa treatments to laptops and lounge chairs priced above by using this so-called interest-free installments that are offered to credit card holders. But what some buyers don’t really know is that once you have defaulted an installment, the bank will start to charge you exorbitant interest rates at 15% to 20% per annum! Remember, nothing is free in this world and everything comes with a price, and the worst place that one could get something ‘free’ is to go the banks and financial institutions! The use of installment payment plan will effectively make you a servant to the lender. Whether you like it or not, you have to set aside a portion of your earnings to service the payment, and banks and borrowers who could be the retailers themselves are waiting for you to default the payment because they can begin charging you interest. You are now a servant to them – you work but your income goes to them.

With the opening of the two casinos and couple with the easily availability of money through borrowings, we have been made aware of how people have been influenced, and more often than not, snared by a system of debt – some legal and some through borrowing from unlicensed- money lenders and loan-sharks. It is referred to as the “Mystery Babylon the Great” in the Bible. It is also called the abomination of the earth, where men are “lovers of pleasures more than the lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:2), driven by a worldwide marketing of merchandise (Revelation 18:11-17). We don’t need to seek further than our commonsense to tell us that excess use of borrowing will plunge the world into debt by alluring people to possess things which go beyond their needs and purchasing things that they cannot afford. Many people are trapped in debt because of a desire to buy everything they see that is pleasant to the eyes. As children of God, we must learn to master our finances and do not let the finances master us, and the use of plastic cards whether they are Master Card or non-Master Card will lead us to the same predicament – the predicament that we are going to serve our Master Lender! Therefore, if you are now in debt (other than the basic essentials like a mortgage loan or a car loan) get out from it as soon as you can, and if you are not in debt, if you are one of the few fortunate ones who have not choke up your credit card borrowings or buying things on installment plan, pray earnestly that you can escape from this. The golden rule is: Buy only when you can afford – whether in season like this time or out of season when Christmas is over!

One of the best lessons that we can learn is to look at the national debt of America. As a nation, it owes more than US$ 13 trillion in public debt. By the pure weigh of the debt, the nation is now on the brink of bankruptcy. All that the government can do is to print more money, raised more debt by selling more treasury bills. They need the money to redeem the debt, and just at an interest rate of 5% per annum they need US$ 1.8 billion a day to pay for the interest. It was reported that an average American doesn’t save more than 5% of their income. The end result is that they are now paying for the price of the excesses and very soon, the once ‘master of the world economy’ is going to be subservient to other countries. The country is now already paralyzed by the national debt with the value of American dollar is depreciating, many economists have predicted that there is absolutely no way that America could get out of its debt and become a debt-free. The lesson is important for us – let us not fall into the same trap and reach a point where we cannot become debt-free and, worst become a bankrupt. It is no easy task to be debt-free as we always find it difficult to turn our eyes away from those fanciful marketing brochures. The best approach, if everything fails, is to buy when you can afford it but before you pull out the plastic card to swipe over the machine or sign an interest-free installment plan agreement, remember Proverb 22:7: The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. What can occur to America can occur to any country (as we can see that several countries in Europe are suffering from the snare of debt) and to also any individual. We need the power of His Spirit to help us to continuously turn our eyes away and to help us to keep on looking towards the humble birth of Christ, His humble beginning, His humble and sinless life, His love for the lost souls, His death and His resurrection. All those commercials that appear before your eyes are an abomination to God and the world of merchandise can only promise you nothing more than a simple and brief delight and enjoyment. The festive of Christmas is nothing more than just to remind ourselves the we have a Saviour born two thousand years ago in a manger where sheep and other domestic animals were kept. We must not just let Christmas be the only time or season to remind us of this because we must make everyday our Christmas day - we must remind ourselves of the love of God and His willingness to become man to redeem us from our sin the very moment we wake up from bed. While many churches are taking this opportunity to proclaim Jesus to the world, especially to the non-believers, again we must proclaim Jesus and His redeeming work to the world at every opportunity, not just during Christmas. It is definitely not the time for any excessess! And we must be careful not to let the Christmas season turns into a time of excessess but rather into a time of true worship to acknowledge the Deity and Divinity of Jesus and He is the only Saviour that the world is ever needed.

May the love of God be with you always by the reading of this message, and as a new season begins, let God be your Financial Adviser and that you can always be free from the snare of debt.

Revelation,

Thanks for the encouraging message.

By way of note, it is noteworthy to know that Jesus was not born on Dec 25 - I believe you know this too. There are many versions of why Dec 25 is used as the birth date of Jesus but one thing is quite obvious - Dec is a very cold month and Jesus couldn't be born in an open area in a manger. Also, the shepherds would have not come because during winter, there is no grass for them to bring their sheep to feed but we are told that the shepherds were the earliest witnesses to Jesus' birth. During winter season, the shepherds would have all stayed a home. Also, there were wise men from the east came to worship the Baby Jesus. It's a very very cold season - if it was December - than it would be very unsual for these wise men (who apparently) were traders and businessmen. Who would like to travel in such cold whether risking their lives to do business traveling all the way from east to west? So, Dec is not the month when Jesus was born.

Nevertheless, in both OT and the NT, we have not been told to celebrate birthday of any kind (in general) and the birth of Christ (in particular). None of the apostles celebrated Crhist's birthday neither the observance of His birthday is taught in the Bible.

Church history has it that even early Roman Catholic Church ban the celebration of Christmas and only until one of the early Popes reversed the decision and declared Dec 25 is the birth date of Christ then signalled the start of Christmas celebration.

For me as a Christian, I don't celebrate Christmas. We must, however, celebrate the birth of Jesus everyday when we wake up from our bed. The birth of Christ was extremely essential because without His birth, then how could He later suffer as an Unblemish Lamb on the cross? So, make everyday our day of rememberance of His birth and not just in the month of December.

God Bless

Are you ready for more stuff you didn't know about Christmas?

Did you know that a pagan winter festival was traditionally the most popular festival of the year in many cultures long before Jesus ever came to this earth?

Did you know that December 25th was celebrated as the "birthday" of pagan gods such as Mithras and Sol long before it became Christianized?

Did you know that Jesus WAS NOT born on December 25th?

One of the pagan pre-Christian festivals was called Saturnalia.

It was a holiday when the Romans commemorated the dedication of the temple of their god Saturn, which was on the 17th of December and the festival would last for a whole week until the 23rd of December.

Later the Romans also started holding a festival on December 25 called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, which means "the birthday of the undefeated sun."

Pagan Scandinavia also celebrated a winter festival called Yule, which was held from late December to early January. Yule logs were lit to honor the god "Thor". The holiday would continue until the Yule log burned out, which could take as many as twelve days. Thus this is where we get the "12 days of Christmas".

In the year 350 A.D., Pope Julius I declared that "Christ’s birth" would be celebrated on December 25th from then on.

His rationale was that he was trying to make it easier for pagan Romans to convert to Christianity. ( until now christains also go around asking people to convert , what spread good news ? knn !!! )

Jesus was actually born during the Feast of Tabernacles.

christianity is just some kind of repackage " sun worship " . christianity did not only borrow only from the "sun worship " , the ritual of christainity is taken from the " god making " rite of euhemerus . the practice of " god eating " that is , holy communtion was borrow from the aztecs . even the concept of christ dying for you sins is arguably not exclusively christian. the self-sacrifice of a young man to absolve the sins of his people appears in the earliest tradition of the quetzalcoat . very little in any organizes faith is truly original . every religion have heaven as a reward and hell as punishment . religion are not born from scratch . they grow from one another ...so drop your religion now

I want ONE shred of evidence that Jesus was born from a virgin. ONE. Christians have NONE, yet they believe in it as a 100% fact. They teach it as fact to impressionable young minds in church. And their faith revolves around these fairy tales. And this is just ONE example of MANY MANY MANY fairy-tale stories that are told in their most sacred, holy book. They devote their lives to everything written in the bible.
