Although I can appreciate foreigners making the effort to imitate local speech, it will take a linguist to understand the proper usage of lahs, lors and mehs unless they have been here for a very long time and had comfortably assimilated into the local culture. Just for example the above, using 'lah' just won't jive with the answer's intent. It should have been 'lor' or 'mah' so as to define resignation. I would venture to offer my understanding of these 'suffix codes.'

1) 'lah' = No big deal or Don't make a big deal out of it.

2) 'lor' = If it is such a big deal to you(other).

3) 'mah' = Emphatically because.

4) 'meh' = You mean it's possible? or Can that be possible? (meh is interrogative)

5) 'woh' = Can you believe that?

6) 'hor' = Don't you agree? and (when using 'So hor') As you can see.....

7) 'leh' = Befuddled or Lost or No knowledge or Confused.

Any brothers or sisters wish to contribute?

so telling ppl the diff between 'advise' & 'advice' will make u look smart:confused::biggrin::eek:

Stupid sinkies should learn to get "advise/advice" right before they attempt to add half baked suffixes to a language that does not belong to them.

The la, leh, hor, wah piah etc you cannot change. This is the evolution of Singlish. No one can change it. Get on with life.

Sam, accept it. So be it. Move on.

It makes no difference to me. The ultimate victims are the native sinkies who have become the minority in their own country and have to resort to "Singlish" in a last ditch effort to retain some resemblance of a national identity.

It's a pathetic situation but the sad fact is that is that sinkies brought this upon themselves by voting in the Pappies at every election.

Hey Sam, you are confused. Speaking singlish and voting the pappies are 2 separate issues. Singlish speakers can also vote opposition wat.

Voting pappies is what brought about the influx of foreigners.

Without the foreign invasion that has marginalised the natives, this false sense of pride in the ability to speak Singlish would never have come about.

Hi Sam, again, I choose to differ. Speaking singlish has nothing to do with influx of foreign trash. It is uniquely singapore. Speaking singlish does not make one more superior than a non-native.

singlish is derived from chinese dialects, mah ...

if u know how to speak chinese, u will know how & where to use the lah, the lor, mah & so on ... if u don't speak chinese, u will not be able to speak singlish fluently either ...

and hor ... chinglish is even more unintelligible than singlish ... its basically using chinese grammar with english words ... the PRCians & HKongers find this amusing ... they understand chinglish (ofcos), but cannot understand WHY sinkies would want to use it in the first place, why won't sinkies learn proper english from the brits/americans just as they themselves would like to do ...

i would appreciate if the FTs NOT try to speak singlish to feel closer to us ... 1st of all, the non-chinese speakers would find it hard to learn, their using 'lahs' in all the wrong places makes me cringe ... secondly the chinese speakers from mainland, HK & taiwan despise us for using it, ... and thirdly i don't wanna get close to these FTs ... juz speak to us in standard english pls ...
