Three Uzbekistan nationals to hang for drug trafficking

SHAH ALAM: A pensioner and two unemployed Uzbekistan citizens were sentenced to death by hanging for trafficking in 10kg of methampethamine at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sepang, three years ago.
Shah Alam High Court Judge Nurchaya Arshad handed down the sentence on pensioner Dilbar Nazarova, 54, Jasur Djurakulov, 39, and Sayora Nurmukhamedova, 58, after finding them guilty of the charge.
Nazarova were charged with trafficking in 4.2kg of methampetamine, while Djurakulov and Nurmukhamedova were charged with trafficking in 3.6kg and 2.2kg of the same drugs, respectively.
They were charged with committing the offence at the Arrival Hall of KLIA at 9.30 am on Sept 7, 2010.
The charge, under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
In her judgment, Nurchaya said the prosecution succeeded in proving the case beyond reasonable doubt and that the defence by the accused were merely a denial.
She said the defence by the accused that they did not know that drug trafficking was a serious crime in this country could not be accounted as there were always announcements by airline on matter before the plane landed at the airport.
They were arrested carrying the drug in their respective luggage, which they claimed was given to them by a man called Shoruh at the Tashkent airport before departing to Malaysia.
They claimed they came to Malaysia for business and wanted to buy DVD players and computer parts to be brought back to Uzbekistan.
The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Zainal Azwar Kamaruddin, while lawyer Hisham Teh Poh Teik represented the three accused. - Bernama
