Yes..indeed.
I was very surprised that there are many ethnic chinese in Thailand.People like former PMs like Chavalit,Baharn, Chuan Leekpai, Yingluck, thaksin, Pridi are all chinese. There are millions of them in Thailand but all are assimiliated and took only Thai names and speak Thai and practiced Thai culture. They can be leaders and nobody can criticised them like BN did always to the chinese. They contributed immensely to their country of adoption.
Similarily, even though the Chinese in Indonesia are assimiliated , millions still stay and has become successful business and political leaders. People like Sofian Wanandi,Henry Setiawan, sudono salim, kimun ongkosanjojo still control the country economy and Indonesians benefit greatly from the contribution of the chinese.
If Malaysia is sincere and appreciative of its industrious chinese minority, it cannot forever using them as scapegoats whenever there is problems. By casting them as a separate coummunity through their different beliefs, culture, language and traditions, the Malaysian govt should not blame the chinese for being different . The chinese may also feel that the Malaysian govt intentionally want them to be a different distinct community vs the rest of the Malay Population.Spore did a good job since 1965 to build a Spore identitiy by using English as a common language with English medium schools and closing all chinese schools. The lesson in the 50s and 60s between the chinese educated and english educated also create a class and political divide. PM najib on the other hand wants to open more chinese schools ! If Najib is serious and concern about his chinese minority, he should see these examples and assist the chinese to quickly assimiliate into the larger community instead of pulling them further apart and then blame them when the opportunity rises.
