RAW: Thai Military Cadets Forced Smash Their Smartphones
Published on Sep 17, 2015
A group of Thai military cadets have been forced to smash their smartphones after breaking the rules of their training camp.
A commanding officer can be heard on the video berating them for bringing their phones to training, the Associated Press reports.
"You just bought this, right? Expensive, eh?" the officer asks.
"Smash it!"
The clip, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times across Facebook and Thai social media sites has drawn condemnation, saying the punishment far outweighs the crime.
Ironically the video itself is filmed vertically, indicating it was most likely captured on a smartphone.
The Thai navy has issued a statement saying the incident happened at the Communications and Information Technology School, which strictly forbids students from carrying mobile phones on school grounds.
It was supposedly part of the school's "honour system", with students smashing their phones voluntarily if they are caught.
The statement said the school has since ordered the practice to stop.
