Teens nabbed for robberies

TWO teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, have been arrested for their involvement in two cases of lift robberies. A 17-year-old boy too was caught in connection with one of the cases. Police had received a report on Monday night from a 62-year-old woman who said two people had tried to rob her inside the lift of Block 21 Hougang Avenue 1.

One of them had pushed her out of the lift and tried to snatch away her handbag. But the victim managed to hold onto it and shouted for help. Both subjects fled when the attempted robbery failed. When officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrived at the scene, they managed to detain a 17-year-old girl fitting the description provided by the victim.

The other suspect - a 15-year-old girl - was found about 40 minutes later. Both suspects were brought back for further investigations. The suspects were believed to be responsible for another case of lift robbery on Aug 17 at Block 123C Rivervale Drive, involving a 14 year-old female victim.

Further investigations showed that a 17-year-old male accomplice was also involved in the case. He was subsequently arrested in the vicinity of Syed Alwi Road early Tuesday morning. The three suspects will be charged in Court on Wednesday for an offence of robbery with hurt, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years jail and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
