A man believed to be involved in a murder case in Sydney appeared at a district court here on Thursday.

20—year—old tertiary student Andrew Iskandar was arrested at Changi Airport on Wednesday after a warrant of arrest was issued in Australia. He was believed to be on a flight bound for Indonesia from Sydney.

When he appeared before the court this morning, the accused appeared dazed. The proceedings were brief.

Prosecutors asked that he be remanded for another seven days as investigations are ongoing. The accused will appear before the court again on March 4.

When approached, prosecutors declined to reveal any details about the case or talk about Andrew’s arrest.

However, it is believed that he was arrested in connection with the death of the Malaysian consulate Mohd Shah Saemin, who was beaten outside his Sydney home on Sunday.

Taxi driver Hazairin Iskandar was recently charged for the murder. According to Australian reports, he is the father of the accused. Hazairin’s wife, Nita Eriza, was also arrested for allegedly hindering police investigation.

The Australian media is suggesting that the murder could be a crime of passion as Hazairin had suspected that his wife was involved in an affair with the victim.

Nita, an Indonesian—born Australian citizen, was said to have worked at the consulate for about 10 years. News reports said Mr Mohd Shah began working at the consulate three years ago after moving to Australia in 2000.

Initially, Australian police believed the attack on Mr Mohd Shah was the result of a road rage incident. Witnesses said the victim was set upon by two men despite an attempted intervention by a female passer—by.

Despite the efforts of a passer—by to stop the attack and the CPR rendered by police officers, Mr Mohd Shah succumbed to his injuries.

It is, however, still unclear what role Andrew played in the attack.

However, MediaCorp understands that he would be handed to the Australian police once the court proceedings are over.
