You cannot charge anyone in absentia in Singapore. He was charged in court and was on bail with 2 sureties put up by his friends. No order was sought to retain his passport. Why the passport was not retained became a subject of speculation in parliament and elsewhere.
They preferred charges after he ran, not to punish or call in account but to prevent him from coming back. SILO was supposed to run the supermarket co-operative. NTUC was supposed to run the department store co-operative, then known as NTUC Wellcome. Both were merged since, now known as NTUC FairPrice.

Exactly. The charges were comestic formality to prevent him from coming back and drag more people underwater. To put it bluntly, telling him to fuck off and let's forget about it.

BTW, you can charge someone in absentia in Singapore. FS, TLH, CSJ, plenty of examples.

Charged in court for what and in absentia ?

Francis, tax evasion, charged in absentia, case presented to court for warrant of arrest.

TLH, tax evasion and defamation, charged in absentia, case presented in court for warrant of arrest all the way to international Mareva injunction.

CSJ, defamation, failure to appear in court and the case still proceeded and verdict delivered.

The PAP government may be accused of many things but never lacking in legal formality.

Everyone of them was physically charged in court. They were present without exception. First you said that Phey ran away before being charged now all these chaps.

Singapore does not charge people in absentia. They can proceed with the case in absentia after the person is charged but requires a special court order. Those who abscond before they are charged are placed in the wanted list. They are charged in court once they are apprehended. Warrant of arrest is only applied after they are formally charged in court. and its a merely formality. You do not need a warrant of arrest to be place on the wanted list. JBJ was Tang's counsel when was charged in court.

This is getting childish and ridiculous. OK you win, forget it.

Just go and find out since when TKL and FS appeared in court as defendant. CSJ cases were more than one. Once he appeared and once he didn't. Nevermind, I rest my case.

Read my posts carefully.

Teflon stated that they are "charged in absentia". I replied that Singapore does not charge anyone in absentia. They have to be physically present in court to be charged of if they are ill or hospitalised, the magistrate will go to the hospital. After having charged someone, if they abscond, conducting the trial in absentia is a different matter and you need to make a special application. They did that in Francis Seow's case.

Teflon also stated that for Phey Yew Kok, they preferred the charges after he ran away. That too is false. You cannot press charges if they are not around. He was charged in court and absconded whilst on bail.

Now you know why Tan Kin Lian lost his desposit. With half baked Ah Bengs advising another Ah Beng and getting all their facts wrong. They probably translated all the press, forum and poll comments and told him that he was in the lead. The probably thought the lower the number , the higher the position rank wise.

yup, don't think he was charged in absentia, but convicted in absentia. there's a difference between the two. anyway, blame it on technicality in engrish for screwing us up. believe it was an honest misunderstanding.

Yes, he was convicted in absentia. After he was charged, he went to US, travelled around and kept claiming that he will be back to defend himself, had to do check-up for his heart etc. But he made sure that he used the publicity to embarrass the PAP Govt. The Govt sent it's agents to keep surveillance and it must have cost a fortune. Lee Siew Choh queried the surveillance expenses in parliament but they refused to reveal.

I remember that he took them for multiple rides across the top part half of the states including places like Indiana. Ever seen Singaporeans wearing suits for the first time try to fit in at a hotel lobby in the states. Then he said he was too sick to come back.

Thanks for the news.

Should visit Fair Price HQ some days. I wonder if Cynthia and the "provision shop owners" are still working there. I understand the Phua spend some good money renovating the Upper Thomson HQ even though it is due to be demolished a couple years later.
Forgot the rest of the news I received. I was only interested in the news that TKL former speechwriter is working there now.

You guys should set up SBFLeaks sub-forum for such valuable contributions. Otherwise it will be wasted. Not many people like to talk about them - unless they have migrated and retired and have grandkids to entertain. But grandkids don't bother about SILO or Metro and fall asleep during the most exciting stories. Better keep the stories here.
