It is about time the police do something like conducting large-scale anti-crime operations against groups that loiter around.

Round these thugs (including their girlfriends) and have them detained for the maximum period that is legally allowed under the Criminal Procedure Code or the Societies Act.

ALL SINGAPOREANS, including those present here as tourists or what not, have the supreme right of protection from the State.

The perpetrators (irregardless of race, etc...) should get the message (via tough police stand) that such "unruly cowardly" acts have no place in Singapore and that the long arm of the law will swing hard at them.

Needless to say, at the end of the day, the State owes a duty of care to the people of Singapore.

Simple things like keeping Neighbourhood Police Centres opened at all time is the best solution rather then locking it up at night. Imagine some wounded person running towards a NPC only to find it locked. Do the SPF want the victim concerned to bleed to death infront of their locked NPC?

If there is a need to increase manpower for the Singapore Police Force, please do so. Don't stinge on areas of public security. Maybe, the Force can buy less flashy cars (for patrol and VIP protection) and motorcycles and used the money saved from the allotted Budget to recruit more officers.

If I may suggest, "if there is a need to make the officers masquerade as "bullies and thugs" please do so. The CNB has in the past used the services of Caucasians to make "deals" with drug-traffickers. It was a resounding success.

The SPF can do it for they have enough young men (NSmen) under their umbrella. Use this people to pose as "pai-kias" and get those unruly Singaporeans to be trapped and thoroughly investigated. If weapons are found, charge them with illegally possessing dangerous weapons. If fights took place, those "posing" as "pai-kias" can take out their weapons and fire in self-defence.

Surely we do not want to follow the route that certain countries police force is taking.

If there is no Fire there won't be SMOKE.

Well, you do realise that without access to guns, the gangs have always been manageable. What we are looking at are one off incidences that are only newsworthy because of it's rarity. Utilising entrapment to target criminals is a double edged sword that can easily backfire on us. If it becomes a reality, sooner or later, we have the cops spraying paint on HDB walls in their bid to infiltrate ah long organisations. We already have CID's SSB, which I hear is pretty well-connected in the local gang scene.

This is not the United States where the courts of law do ensure that your rights are given, in Singapore, the policeman have more rights that the man on the street. We do not have the right to a lawyer as soon as they arrest us. It's up to the police's discretion when you can have access to a lawyer or family members. The courts work hand in hand with the prosecution and police force. Whatever the police charges a suspect in consultation with the DPP, the court usually rubber stamps it.

Singapore still allows detention without trial, and a good many gang members are put behind bars using it. The odds are indeed stacked against these gangs, so I'm not too worried about that. What we should acknowledge is that all this while the police have been given much power discretion under our laws, yet what you are suggesting is giving them more powers.

hopefully these incidents are few and far between. nonetheless it is of concern. the fact that the weapon is there seems to point to the fact that these youngsters bring along with them wherever they go. not sure if nowadays police are like those of the olden days where they have connections with the underworld - if they are then they should know how these people operate and where they safekeep their weapons for such occasions to arise.
not sure if this is a one-off case just because they don't like the way he walked. the pasir ris incident was claimed to be an innocent guy being hit - but it turned out different.
i think that there is more to it than meets the eye

they are gangster wannabes. street corner gangs at best.

Spot on! The people who joins these steet gangs are amateurish & of low quality stock. Probably from poor parental genes as well. That's why the life of being a despatch rider or pizza delivery boy awaits them.

No need too drastic action. Just round up those loitering youth and send them to changi chalet for a tour. Highlight will be the execution and caning chambers.

I wonder how such weapons can be brought along and stashed for possible use.

MRT stations have security officers and cameras. Public buses are fitted with cameras too.

So how are these weapons transported to the "possible war-zone"?

Could it be by means of taxis, private vehicle, etc...

In the old days police set up road blocks to nab such people, Today road-blocks are only for one purpose - DRINK DRIVING.....

The police should interrogate the suspects and find out from them as to how they move such weapons around.

Nab those "transporting" those weapons too for it is a clear cut case of "in furtherance of common intention".

If such transportation of weapons cannot be curtailed, then it would be disastrous as people can move around much more dangerous chemicals, solutions, etc...
